The golf course at Red Mountain Ranch & Country Club is a beautifully designed layout set against a desert landscape with rock formations, mesquite trees, and cacti. Pete and Perry Dye designed the course, combining both beauty and challenge. This championship course was built on rolling terrain and has large, sharply contoured greens and extensive mounding that is reinforced with railroad ties. There are not only deep sand bunkers but also grass bunkers protecting the greens. There are also four ponds on the course at Red Mountain Ranch & Country Club, but only three create water hazards that come into play on four holes. A notable hole on the course in which water comes into play is the sixth, a hole that has a peninsula green with water surrounding it along three sides.

Fun and Challenging course

Unique design with lots of challenge around the greens. Tee to green isn’t the challenge - it is around and on the greens that you will need a good short game to score well. All in all very fun to play but needs to be played more than once to know how to play it.

Poor condition

The course was in very poor condition. The fairways were hard and dry. Very little grass on the fairways. The rough was basically dirt. The sand traps were dirt traps, with nothing the resembled sand in them.

Challenging

Unfortunately only played 9 but found the course interesting and challenging. Elevated greens were hard and difficult to stick unless you could hit a high approach shot that didn’t have much impetus. Greens were bumpy and didn’t quite roll the same as the practice green. Overall, enjoyed the desert like terrain. Pace of play was overall good. Finished 9 holes within 2.5 hours. Staff was great to work with. Would be interested in returning for a full round.

Expected better

Was really disappointed with the layout. They had so many weird designed bunkers with hardly any sand in them. And the grass was really bad and patchy in the rough. You get some really bad lies as a result of it. If you miss the greens and fairways, your going to have a really tough time on this course. The bad grass and so many bunkers makes chipping hard. I would not recommend this course. I’ve played a lot of courses in Arizona and this was one of my least favorite that I’ve played.

Disappointing Conditioning

The course layout is OK, but it seems like a low-budget Pete Dye design, bordering on the goofy at times. The greens were very rough and bumpy, so that making anything longer than a 2-3 foot putt felt fortunate. The grass around the greens, off the fairways, and in the so-called 'grass bunkers' was some combination of thin, wispy, non-existent, bare, and VERY inconsistent--which made getting up and down on these very undulated greens exceedingly difficult. For example, your position would all but necessitate a flop shot, but the grass, or lack thereof, would make that shot highly unlikely to pull off. In addition, the 'sand' in the bunkers was like someone snuck onto a construction site, and stole their fine gravel for their cement mix----funky and full of small rocks and pebbles. I played here once 4 years ago, and remembered this time why I hadn't been back. Plus, we waited on EVERY shot for the entire 18 holes. If the conditioning was superb, this course might be fun to play for variety, but given the current conditions, I highly would advise against booking a tee time there. Given the huge selection of courses in the Scottsdale/Mesa area, I'm striking this one off my list.

Great course for the money

Great course for the money. High value course. Conditions were fairly dried out & greens were very challenging to hold (needed water). But overall my favorite course for the money in the Phoenix area.

Deteriorating condition

I’ve now played Red Mountain a few times over the past 8 years. It’s a tough course and the layout gives it the potential to be spectacular. However, it seems like every time I play it, the condition is worse than the previous time. The fairways were in fairly good condition but immediately off the fairway it was often just dirt. The bunkers were not well maintained. Worst of all the greens were poor - slow, bumpy, patchy.
