El Conquistador Golf & Tennis - Canada Course
About
The Canada Course plays through forests of mesquite trees, offering a parkland atmosphere amongst a desert landscape. The natural terrain snakes through ravines and arroyos, providing several natural hazards. Considerable mounding, doglegs and elevation changes provide a varied layout, making club selection an important factor in addition to careful strategy. Golfers should be prepared to use every club in their bag. The course’s signature hole is the eighth hole, considered one of the toughest par 3s in Tucson. The hole requires players to drive the ball uphill along a narrow ridge between two Saguaro cacti, and canyons border the greens on both sides.

Typical of course condition Photo submitted by DARoyer on 03/29/2013
The Canada track is better right now.
The O'l Man is in town for the first time since I moved to Oro Valley. He wanted to play golf every day on the 4 days we could. We chose El Conquistador - Canada (1), El Conquistador - Conquistador (2), Dove Mountain (3), Tucson National (4), in that order. I would have started with El Conquistador - Conquistador first. It was definitely the inferior track to it's sister course.
Conquistador's greens were not cut and we played on a beautiful Friday afternoon, that is unacceptable. We could tell this because they have splotches of weeds growing on the greens that had not been mowed.
Fairways were burnt out, probably from puddles of water in the fairway that were overheated by the sun.
Most of the holes contain housing developments (and thus Out of Bounds) on both sides of the hole. I feel like this detracts from the overall quality of the golf course.
Aesthetics are okay. The views are great. Vegetation is nice.
Most of the cart paths need to be repaved.
The bunkers could be better kept.
They seem to have a shortage of manpower.
Pace of play for us was 3:30. We were a 2-some who had the courtesy of playing through groups on 4 and 10. Then we hit the group of old ladies who were slower than continental drift.
The beverage cart made her way around 3 times, however, which helped make the debacle unfolding in front of us a little less irritating and slightly more humorous.
Overall, the experience was good. Is it priced well for what you are getting? No. Back in Minnesota that would have been a $35.00 - $50.00/round course.
Don't waste your time
Course is not well maintained. Carts are old gasses that sort of work. Pace of play was ridiculously slow and no Marshall to do anything.
Improved
The course is in much better shape than the past few years and I trust the change in management will continue this positive trend.
This course is in great shape.
Great course would play again..........................................................................................
Nice course
The course is pretty straight forward but some holes are really challenging from the back tees. It was in good condition although the bunkers lacked sufficient sand. No problem playing the ball down. Not very difficult rough even though it's bermuda, except around some greens the ball can settle down. Course can play long from the back tees. For the most part, the fairways are pretty lenient.
Slow round
It took over 5 hours to play 18 holes. Although we were paired with 2 gentlemen who were very slow, it wouldn't have made much difference if they played a normal pace. The course was backed up for several groups ahead of us and at many holes there were several pairings waiting to play.
Greens were in poor condition. I've played this course before over many years so I can say they were not what I had expected.
Very slow pace of play
We waited on every hole to tee off, then waited for every shot till on the green. Course marshals did nothing about the slow play. Our golf cart ran out of power and saw at least one other cart with same problem.
Rude and slow pace
The manager (she was wearing a red jacket) was incredibly rude. We asked her for help in the pro shop and she said "she only deals with helping members". There was nobody else in the pro shop. Apparently our money was not good enough for her to help us.
It was a 4:45 hour round and we were always waiting in the tee box on all holes but the first. Don't play this course.
Very nice and beautiful scenery
Nicely laid out and mature course; will play again. Staff excellent and well organized.
great day of golf
2nd time in 2 weeks cart battery dead before round finished
also being pushed by group behind , with less than 4hr round
Good to see Randy in pro shop , a great rep. for club
Beautiful
Course was in great condition. Perfect greens and fairways. Very challenging.
Great day
Good times with a good buddy. The course was empty and in very very good shape. To all golfers fill or replace your divisors and repair your ball marks on the greens.
First impressions can be deceiving
The lack of upkeep in the non grassy areas gives you the impression that the course is not in good condition. The greens are average, yes, with a few unrepaired ball marks, but the fairways are pretty good considering the recent overseeding. The design is also good. No bad holes and a few are quite challenging. Overall, if you put blinders on to avoid looking at the surroundings and only look at the ccourse, it's pretty good.
Canada Course at El Conquistador
The course was in excellent condition. It's now in the Cart Path Only mode but play moved along well. In my humble opinion it's one of the top courses for the money in the Tucson area.
bad time of yeat to play
Last weekend before overseeding so golf wasn't great. It's always better to be playing golf even if the course is bad then most other things. Day was nice, fairways were brown.
Poor customer service for the public golfers
I have had poor experiences with this course in the past. But since course selection is limited with overseeding, I made a reservation. First the course's published overseeding schedule showed Canada was closed for overseeding, so I had to call to confirm since I was able to make a tee time on Canada. The golf shop told me they were open, but did not disclose the condition of their course (dry, cut down for overseeding). My reservation was for 8:37. I like to warm-up before I start so I get to the course an hour early. I was called by the pro shop to be on the first tee just after 8am (30 mins before my scheduled tee time!). I later found out the "members" had a shotgun that started after our reservation. I left the course feeling that their management just wants my money and they don't care about my experience. That is why they don't disclose the conditions of their course and why they rushed us to start our round. This is not the first time....I'm not going back.
Challenging and enjoyable.
They were preparing to overseed but kept the course very playable. Quick greens and some tough rough in places.
Awesome views of Tucson on this course
Staff very friendly. Have a dress code that golf now failed to mention on website luckily the staff was helpful there. The course was not as good as the staff. But still okay. Mountain views of Catalina's were awesome. Greens a little long on the cut, just not as fast as I'm used to playing on. Good price by golf now would play again at this price.
