Ventana Canyon - Mountain Course
About
The Mountain Course at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon, one of two Tom Fazio designs at this Tucson resort, is a classic desert-style target golf course has quick, undulating greens, elevated tee shots and a number of memorable holes. With four sets of tees, this par-72 course can be stretched to nearly 6,900 yards. The signature hole, the short par-3 third, is one of the most photographed holes in the Southwest and has been known to give up a few aces from balls that ricochet off the boulders that surround the green.

Not friendly Marshall
My wife and I played the course with 2 high handicap gentlemen. Very friendly group.....between my wife and I we have a total handicap of 10 or less . There was also a No cart on the fairway rule in place.
We teed off 20 min late as there was no one on the course.
On the 4th hole the sheriff ( I mean Marshall) said we were way behind in our
Position on the course, we politely explained that we teed off late and that
There was no one behind us!
This individual dogged us the entire round
And got in my face 4 times..... The other gentleman we played with.(a Duke Univ physician and the Superitendent of Scools in Tuscon)were aghast at The Bored Marshall's
behavior and dour attitude on the course!
A great course , but this attitude should not be tolerated, especially when we were effectively required to walk the entire course!
Hope this helps the next groups playing Ventana ......
Stunning course
Make sure to show up very early as the main golf hub is a mile drive in a golf cart from where you check in
Nice Course Sloe Play
The course is always in great shape, but the pace was slow because the over seeding caused cart path only. The last time I played I walked off as we were going at a 5 plus hour pace I like the canyon course better due to the layout but the views are spectacular at both..
Ask for directions
Finding this course is a pain. The GPS address took me to two different wrong places, I walked around the clubhouse area before calling them to get the right directions. They need signage, BAD!
Great course, I'd go back, now that I can find it.
Perfect !!!
Once again Ventana lives up to its reputation. The course is perfect. They didn’t miss a spot with over seeding. The greens are Pure as can be. The director of golf Bob does an amazing job with staff and service. Don’t just play one, play both courses and get the best 18 in Tucson.
Perfect conditions
Day 2 after opening from over seeding. Superb conditions all around, spectacular views and wonderful golf holes. Great experience for the two of us.
Aniversary bash 2017
Having read previous reviews I was a bit worried about the course. Apparently the golf course as nothing to do withe the community or the hotel and neither will allow them to put up any more signage. At least so i was told.
With this in mind when getting there
Go pst the guarded gate house up to the top and turn right go straight past the “Lowes” Hotel on the left on your right there’s a spa on your left at the front of the spa there’s the golf shop. Check in there, someone brought up a golf cart to transfer us to the range which is miles away. Its just different. Everyone was friendly the course was well maintained with lots of holes that would be signature holes on many courses. Really enjoyed my day could have been a nightmare finding my way round. But every I spoked to explained very well
Second Class Citizen
You make plenty of time to practice a little and when you drive into the front gate they tell you the golf course doesn’t want you coming into the front entrance. They treat you like a second class citizen and send you above with bad directions. Then we had a difficult time finding the course and the clubhouse. It is located at an aging resort and you park by the spa and walk to a clubhouse with your clubs. You then walk forever in the general direction of the golf course with no signs to tell you where to go. If you are lucky you find someone who puts your clubs on a cart and then walk forever to the clubhouse and then try to play golf. It is obvious problem is the poor signage. Evidently there is some issue with the resort and the golf course management that has led to there not being signs directing golfers to the pro shop - the golfers suffer - sinage_fail – To top it off they are never going to fix this problem even though they have had numerus complaints. The fairways were scraped I guess to get ready for seeding. But no discount!
Once you find the proshop, you have to take a convoluted route down to the practice facility. From there you have to back track to the first tee, again without adequate signage ** plan extra time for this, get there 15 - 20 min earlier than you would **. Pace of play was - 5 hours.
If you can you would be better off finding another course to play.
Great Track
Expansive layout intertwined among nice houses, beautiful scenic views of surrounding mountains and of Tucson.
Greens were perfect and suer slick! Rewarded for good shots and punished as you should be of you stray. Take advantage where you can score and be happy playing station to station in other spots.
NOTE: Drive all the way up to the hotel and park clubhouse for golf wrapped around first small building on the right and then you have a pretty long drive to first tee depending on where you are starting and which course.
The course was very challenging and in great shape. The greens were very fast compare to what I'm use too.
It was Great my wife and I enjoyed the course. It was a great experience for both of us and challenging. We would recommend this course to our friends. We will be back soon.
This course was in excellent condition.
My wife and I played this course with an early morning tee time. Since we had no one in front of us, we played in just over 3 hours. I really enjoyed the way that they have the tees so close to the cart path and yet they were sometimes hard to find. Elevation changes were very good, especially hole number 3 which only played to a little over one hundred yards, but plays over a ravine that is probably 200 feet deep.
If I have a negative, it is that as a non Resort player, you have to park at the Loews lodge and then take the golf cart nearly a mile to the course. Having said that though, I rate Ventana Canyon as the best course to play in Tucson.
Scenic, Interesting and Challenging
They call it the mountain course for good reason. This is an approach shot golf course. Generous fairways with a few strategic fairway bunkers. But beware on the approach shots. Heavily contoured greens the are quick and reading them a major challenge.
Your short game needs to be spot on to score here.
You can get lost hole to hole
Could not believe GPS system was not in the cart. You need your own because the fairway sprinklers w yardage are few and far between. No towel or water provided so bring your own
My wife and I had a great time on a terrific course where we were treated like a king and quenn
