Ventana Canyon - Mountain Course
About
The Mountain Course at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon, one of two Tom Fazio designs at this Tucson resort, is a classic desert-style target golf course has quick, undulating greens, elevated tee shots and a number of memorable holes. With four sets of tees, this par-72 course can be stretched to nearly 6,900 yards. The signature hole, the short par-3 third, is one of the most photographed holes in the Southwest and has been known to give up a few aces from balls that ricochet off the boulders that surround the green.

One of the best
Perfect weather and playing conditions. Got off on time with no frost delay. The greens were like lightning but the surface was immaculate. Liked the white plastic inserts at top of cups. Hard greens to read with the "mountain" break factor. The pin placements were pretty difficult with the firm greens.
The layout was entertaining on practically every hole.
I could play this course everyday and not get tired of it. The views were of course spectacular.
Can't believe it December
This course was in great condition and the grass was so green and lush we had a hard time believing it wasn't summertime. Everyone connected with our golf outing was friendly and helpful. We had a great time and have already gotten tee times for 2 more days.
Greens like billiard tables
Beautiful course, greens are very fast, maybe 16 on the Stimpy but roll true. Nice but challenging.
Beautiful Course
Great staff. Beautiful surroundings. The course was in perfect condition.
Great course in Tucson
Nice way to spend Thanksgiving
The good and bad.
Beautiful course. Amazing vistas. Hole 10 is a spectacular hole with a huge, unique rock formation. Exquisitely maintained. Immaculate, in fact.
You'll note, however, I've only commented on what it looks like. If you're visiting and want a scenic experience, this is great. However, if you're serious about your scores, you may want to pass. Here's why:
The greens: Like pavement. Impossible for first timers to read. Can't stop the ball on them at all. Essentially you aren't rewarded for hitting into the green. Even if you're playing well, you'll find yourself not keeping score anymore because of these greens. Also, I didn't think it would be a big deal, but the amount of driving from hole to hole is noticeable. I enjoyed it for three most part, but towards the end you start to notice it adds to your round time and fatigue.
I enjoyed it. Great way to experience Tucson especially if you're in a group. However, if your game has been on a roll, it's stops here.
My Favorite Course
Excellent Golf Course, Highly Recommend!
Ventant Canyon
Even tough we were just after the overseed season ( opened 3 days prior), the conditions were excellent with a very nice layout. The only negative part was car path restrictions but this I s normal after overseed season.
Just open after overseed
Staff courteous and helpful. Just open after over seed cart path only. Country club resort facilities. Nice layout, pay attention to signs layout. Lot of driving to holes. Short course if you play on any of tees except the black. Lush and great coverage. Green roll true.
Outstanding Tucson Golf
Ventana Canyon gets just about everything right. Played the Mountain course which is spectacular. Greens were fast and very challenging. The layout is great and the holes presented lots of variety. Highly recommend.
One of the best in Tucson
Best scenic views in Tucson. Excellently maintained. Difficulty but fair layout. Staff is attentive and helpful. Restaurant was excellent for lunch. Tap beer variety was limited, however.
Great condition for fall, prior to overseed
Excellent overall experience
This course has stunning views
The mountain course is a beautiful course. We played to gold tees. The fairways and tees are lush, the greens are quick and the view from most anywhere is just gorgeous this course is well worth the money.
Memorable course that was in great condition.
Played both the Mountain and Canyon courses at Ventana over consecutive days as a guest of the Loews Ventana Resort.
The Mountain was a little more scenic, but I preferred the Canyon course in terms of play. Both were in terrific shape with lush fairways and fast greens.
Was paired with great people (I was there as as single), including some members with the all important local knowledge! Pace of play was excellent with next to no waiting on any hole due to the 10 minute gaps in tee times.
Found the staff to be helpful and friendly, and would definitely return to play both courses again. Make sure you bring your camera as some of the views of the mountain ranges and cactus forests are spectacular.
Beautiful veiw
Course extremely beautiful. Very nice layout enjoyed playing
No signage /organizaiton
This course has changed the location of the Pro shop (Check in ) moving it a couple of miles. The original location has always been very convoluted to find and now once you find it it is closed and there is no signage until you get to the Pro Shop. The you have to go about two miles to find the actual check in spot. Very poor organization and signage. On golf Now they do give the new address . However no alert that things have changed !!! Poor administration.
Beautiful resort and golf
Excellent layout. The greens were top dressed, but the putts rolled fairly straight. The hardest thing about the whole course was finding it. I punched in the hotel address instead of the course address. The
club house is in a different location for the off season. The signage to get around the course I think
could've been better. A little confusing at times.
Great course, rude staff
Played the Canyon Course on Friday, 8/19/2016 and paid $30.00. For a 12:30 T time. Good, deal, but not great considering the time we played. Phenomenal fast greens. Very difficult to read them. Though I had a miserable day playing I was very happy to experience this course . I understand why it is so highly acclaimed. Now the bad part. There is a bad vibe there amongst most of the staff. I noticed it immedietly and so did my playing partners. Check in with the pro shop was strange. They asked for name $30.00 and that was it. Nothing else. Not a word like welcome, have a nice round, or even enjoy. The course ate us alive and we looked forward to some food and drink afterwards. So we enter the restaurant/bar area and take a table. We ordered a round of drinks and asked for menus. The waitress was obviously not into her job because we had to ask for everything. So we finally receive our drinks and discussing our round when an employee (unknown what.
his function was) approaches our table an rudely tells me to remove my hat. I looked around to see if any others in the room had their hats on, but there were only a few others in the room and they appeared to not have just played. They appeared clean, unlike us who most came in from 4 hrs in 100 degree heat in the Az sun. He noticed me looking around an said it was club policy of no hats on in the building. I obliged and as he walked away from our table wanted to give me a stare down. We all looked at each other like what the is his problem and then discussed the stupid no hat policy which I've never experienced anywhere. I could understand the being a policy at a private country club but not a family resort course. After our drink we quickly paid and left, never even seeing a menu which we asked for. We exited the front doors towards the parking lot where we found our clubs. Three of us had stand bags, but my one friend who had a cart bag found his bag laying on the pavement right next to the bag stand. He was not happy. We discussed our round and our experience a few miles down the road at a restaurant and decided not to return and go other places instead in the future
Great Course/Poor Staff
The course was in great shape. The staff on the other hand was rude and unfriendly. Starter was grumpy; check-in was less than friendly; and when I finished they left my golf bag laying on the ground rather than on the rack. In the bar, had to request menu three times. Then at of nowhere, a member of the staff approached our group and demanded we remove our hats. Normally, wouldn't have been a big deal, but no one at check-in said anything about hats. Plus, never heard of this at a resort. Very Poor.. customer service.
Excellent
Great course. Challenging but fair.
