No Pride
This is not a $70 course. This course is in bad shape, the greens are overgrown, the cart was rattling, the clubhouse smells like urine. I genuinely have nothing positive to say about my experience.
Good Value For The Money
Played Serenoa for the first time in several years. Not a difficult course. Due to the low amount of rain in recent weeks the course was very dry, with areas which would usually be wetlands or creeks or ponds being bone dry. Greens were as good as could be expected in these conditions. However, price charged reflects the current conditions and, all-in-all, this was a good value for the money.
Good... Not Great
My first time there... The course is not in great shape. In fairness, they are trying to improve this course. But there's alot to be done. Greens are in pretty good shape. Fairways not bad. Off the fairway is another story... lots of un-manicured areas. If you are a first timer, you will not know how to play the course because there is no overview of each hole... the tee box markers do not have a picture of the hole and there is no picture of the course on the card. So as your standing at the tee box, you have no idea about hazards, etc. This would be a good course if you had a group of guys that just want to go out there, swing some clubs and have a good time. You have to question a course that tries to entice you to join by promoting "a free hotdog and draft beer with every round". The fact that there are very few pictures of the course on the website as another red flag.
Nice place to play lots of animals.
I enjoyed this course overall it is in good shape. Bunkers and some tee boxes could use some work but otherwise good conditions. I liked the layout fairly wide fairways but you can hit into trouble if not carful. A couple holes you have to choose right club off tee to avoid water crossing fair way. They need a beverage cart person so stop at club house as there is no water on course.
Hard to pronounce, and not as easy as you would expect.
Look at the yardages on the score card. Then, after your round look again. And you will look again because this course plays tougher than you would expect. Be sure to know where the water hazards are. Even the best thought out shot can create issues. I liked the course, but felt I left a few shots out there.
Slow Slow Play. 5 1/2 hour plus round. Almost 3 hours on front. Club books too many tee times per hour. I will wait until summer to play again.
15-20 minutes per hole x 18 holes very unfair. No ranger today. And three-four groups on each hole all day.
Bad experience all the way around
1- they sell you range balls to go hit from of sand at the driving range
2- course is not in very good condition, fairways are hard as a rock and has very little grass, the greens are hard as a rock.
3- pace of play was terrible and when we told the ranger the group in front of us has a hole and a half open in front of them he said “ you should have been here yesterday is was worse”. Didn’t even tell the group to pick up their pace of play.
4- after calling the pro-shop to see if they could do anything, they told us to come on in and they would give us a rain check. This is after 2 1/2 hours and still not done with the front 9. After putting everything back in our car was informed that they can’t give us a rain check.
LEAVE THIS COURSE ALONE, THEY DON’T LIKE SNOWBIRDS.
Needs work.
Found course a moderate test in need of work. Tees and fairways were in poor condition. Greens were in fair condition. Pleasing layout not too much trouble. Tuesday am round played in a little over 4 hrs. On the slower side of all the greens I played they at least rolled true. Est about 8-9 on stimp. Played the sister course Legacy at Lakewood ranch my last day. a vast difference and highly recommended. They confirmed that Serenoa was indeed in need of repair and that a 1-2 million dollar rework is scheduled for next year. Ill wait until after the work is done.
Typical Florida run
Typical because this course doesn't seem to water and does not overseed with rye so grass on fairways and around greens is sparce. Nice layout with challenging placements of bunkers and water. Greens were in nice shape.
Good, could be great experience
Love the layout and the wildlife, only criticism is pace of play. Also I think you overbook
Average Florida course
Serenoa is typical (unfortunately) of most Sarasota area courses in winter. Crappy dormant bermuda grass, lots of barren sections especially in chipping areas just off greens. This course like others doesn't seem to water or overseed with rye which would make playing much more enjoyable. High winter prices and poor conditions make me want to leave my clubs back up north next season. Other than that critique, Serenoa is a challenging layout with water on almost every hole. You better hit them straight or bring a lot of extra balls.
Room for Improvement
Although it is a very nice layout, there are several areas along the fairways that need considerable work to improve drainage. In numerous areas along the cart paths there are huge ruts filled with water which as per another golfer have been there for many years. The tee boxes are oddly uneven. The greens are nicely maintained. Tee times are set up at 7 minutes apart which of course will slow down pace of play. Practice areas are great. And it is a pleasant surprise to get a free drink or even lunch! I did think the price was a bit high but after all this is winter in Florida!
Thanks for playing Serenoa and for your review also. Indeed Serenoa has a great layout - and will only get better this summer. As spring ends we'll begin $777,000 of renovations to Serenoa's golf course - to include full scale greens and collars renovation, full bunker renovation, tee top leveling/regrassing, continuation of major tree and bridge work - along with the front of greens drainage improvements that you've noted are needed. Game changer! Very exciting time for Serenoa - and for the future of GREAT GOLF there.
