Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

The greens were a little rough
The greens need some work. To many putts bounced because of divots.
Great value for the quality
This course plays like a pro round
Very challenging all skills
Improvement needed.
The rough was to long, I personally lost 7 golf balls, other people in my 4 sum lost several balls also. The gps told us we were behind. No one in back of us for at least one hole and we caught the group in front of us.
Cutting the rough to a reasonable height will speed up play considerably. It’s not just us, the guys in front of us had the same problem with the long rough. The only way we could find our golf ball was to almost step on it. The greens on the front were blotchy and some of the tee’s needed work like the silver 1st tee. For the money we paid we were disappointed.
Mistaken review
I accidentally posted a review for another course. Makray is awesome, love this course.
Stonewall is not worth the money
This course used to make you feel spoiled, the course was great, the range, practice area, the attention to detail. It seems that they are depending on their name to continue charging high rates, the attention to detail out on course was horrible, also, one of my pet peeves that courses are adopting is eliminating walking rates, completely just about greed, walkers are always faster than carts so they can’t use the pace of play argument, and drinking water on course, for what they charge they should have bottled water out in coolers, kind of like another local course, free of charge. I won’t be golfing here anymore this year.
Very fast greens, very good fairways, long rough
Hard to find the ball in the rough
Good sand in traps
A very good golf test. You get to play every club.
Staff was extremely friendly
Incredible Course
Beautiful course, great layout.
Demanding Greens and Open Fairways.
Can’t wait to go back !!
Too expensive for condition of course
I love this course but they charged too much for the shape the course was in. Should be charging less when conditions aren’t good.
Incredible Course !!
Have been passed this course for many years. Finally had the opportunity to play it. Incredible !! Everything I had imagined it to be. Greens very challenging, wide fairways, but plenty of hazards along the way. Wonderful round, will definitely be back. Highly recommended !!
nice course
staff was very friendly, groups ahead were a bit slow we waited to hit most holes.
Lack of Golf Marshalls
We golfed on a fall day and expected the fall weather and some wind and course was in good shape. Our issue was a combination of the pace of play and the lact of supervision by Mackray Golf staff. We played behind a grouup of men who were slow, they played from the gold tees (and they should have played up by the silver or green tees) and their slow golfing ruined the pace of play. On a par 3 no one reached the green and all players were short, but this slow play combined with the lack of Makray staff turned the possible great day into an average day. Please talk to groups and get a grip on the players ability and enforce play from the tee box which may not suit thier ego but allows for all members to keep up to the pace of play. - David
Great course!
Really enjoyed Makray! Played in a beautiful Fall day and course was in great shape for the end of the season. Definitely one to play in the Chicagoland area!
Poor conditions don’t help
I understand after a week of rain that courses are going to play wet, they absolutely continued to turn the sprinklers on however and every hole had standing puddles in the middle of the fairway. For starters, the course should have been closed, if it’s not they absolutely should not be charging full price (which they did). To top it off the green firmness resembles Pinehurst, impossible course to play and opening it to the public at full price was ridiculous.
Great round of golf
Wonderful course, every hole is interesting and presents a different challenge. And the food in the restaurant is fantastic! One of my favorite places in the area.
