Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

2nd round at Makray
Makray is a fantastic course, made even more so by the fact that it's public. I would highly recommend this course to every golfer, and look forward to playing it again soon!
Rained out
After 5 holes we were called in due to lightening. I was unable to get a replay chit because I booked through golfnow. Course person told me I would have to work through you but none of the contact options allowed me to send you a message. The golf course was fine. What do I do now?
Great course staff less than helpful
Be sure to play the appropriate tees for your skill level. So don’t beat yourself up off the tees - The greens will give you many 3 putts! So don’t expect to score very well! Definitely stay beneath the hole on approach shots. Course gets lots of play so many divots in fairway and big ball marks on the greens. Just be willing to fix them as you play through. Round took 4:10 to play and we waited on every shot so pretty good pace except some slow golfers somewhere on the course.
Lots of fun and will play again.
Nice but..
This is a nice course but the tee boxes and some of the greens were beat up. Kinda surprised and disappointed. For how much this course can be if it’s not a “hot deal” I expected this place to be tops.
Greens are super fast
TURN
I know that the course was to have beverage cart but are group never saw. Comp water was very nice to see. Wish more courses would reward there customers, at turn took way too long to get a hotdog and drink. I know most courses have limited employees because of going back to school but the tee sheet should tell how busy and how to schedule.
Excellent course w/ pace of play issues
I'll start off by saying if you haven't played here yet, definitely check it out. One of the nicer public courses in the Chicagoland area.
However, I played Sunday at 640 AM and the pace of play was horrendous. You would think with a very early tee time, and higher than average pricing ($90) pace of play wouldn't be an issue. We played a 5 hour round because the group in front of us was being gapped by 2 holes! The "ranger" came around and we told him that they were incredibly slow. He said he told them to pick it up but there was nothing more he could do. I dont think he took it seriously when we told him on hole 3, because on hole 14 he was complaining to us how slow they were.
Message to Makray: if you have a "ranger" he has one job. Make sure he's doing it. Tell the players to skip a hole if necessary. They were causing a huge bottleneck to all the groups behind them.
Could not agree more.... Rangers should know how to move the herd; but what I'm seeing now in our new pandemic scarred society is two things.
People no longer care about how their behaviour affects others and now with many new players taking up golf as a way to get out of the house, they have no clue regarding etiqutte or even simple common sense. Used to be early tee times where for better players that got around in less than 4 hours. Sadly that is no longer true.
