Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Test your Game
Fun course to test your game on. Make your club selection Carefully. watch out for roll backs from the crowns. Have fun.
You’re not that guy pal
Greens were bumpy and played super fast. If you’re going to go for a 11+ stimp at least make sure they role true. 4 foot uphills putts rolled off the green behind us multiple times. Not an enjoyable round.
Deceptive
Paid $70 to pay course on Monday! No notice that tee boxes and greens were aerated recently.
Greens were in horrible condition dead spots with lots of bare spots.
Crews were on course spraying all fairways during our play. Blue chemicals on balls and shoes the entire time. White foam all over Fairway from sprayer. Looked like golf balls…and with cart path only. Made it hard to find ball and gauge yardage.
No chargers in golf cart for phone, etc.
In general not a pleasant experience for what I consider a high price for 18 holes in these conditions and no notice that conditions would be that way.
Go Play Mackray!
Like any golf course if you stay in the fairway, can get on in regulation and putt you score well; if not this is one of the most challenging golf courses particularly the greens are very small and fast, and the sand bunkers are very strategically placed.
But overall very fun course, I will definitely be back to visit lay again.
Won't play again
Aeration on greens and some fairways. Rangers everyewhere but did not concern keeping pace of play..
Good course
Its definitely a course that should be on your top list in the Chicago suburbs. That being said, tee boxes were horrible and fairways were a bit beat up. Just looks like its been a busy year there. Greens are a lot of fun. Not sure if its worth a $10-$20 premium compaeed to other courses that are close.
Golfers
Almost a 6 hour round . They did an awful job of making an effort to speed up play . Course always fun to play and nice fast greens
Perfect example of a course that should close.
The day started with a 9:50 am tee time. We ran into a bot of traffic and called the clubhouse and said we where on our way and will be ready as not to delay tee off.
We arrived @9:47am and where ready to go as the started said we where late and now it’s 10:27am. Ok I get it but then we find out the 2 foursomes in front of us where 10;10 and 10:25 but since one of them was a worker at the course they let them go off early. That was still ok with me and my son but they where so slow and on some holes we waited 25 to 30 min!!!! The pace of play was so slow and even though they had plenty of staff not one ranger pushed them to pick up the pace. We where told it’s all backed up in front of them. We finally had enough and headed to the car after the 11th hole. The worse part is when we headed back once we passed the 2 foursomes in front of us the next three holes where empty!!
Guess if you know someone that works there your ok.
Unfortunately I’m forced to play this neglected course for a business outing in a couple of weeks but will definitely put this as one course to never play again.
2nd round at Makray
Makray is a fantastic course, made even more so by the fact that it's public. I would highly recommend this course to every golfer, and look forward to playing it again soon!
Rained out
After 5 holes we were called in due to lightening. I was unable to get a replay chit because I booked through golfnow. Course person told me I would have to work through you but none of the contact options allowed me to send you a message. The golf course was fine. What do I do now?
Great course staff less than helpful
Be sure to play the appropriate tees for your skill level. So don’t beat yourself up off the tees - The greens will give you many 3 putts! So don’t expect to score very well! Definitely stay beneath the hole on approach shots. Course gets lots of play so many divots in fairway and big ball marks on the greens. Just be willing to fix them as you play through. Round took 4:10 to play and we waited on every shot so pretty good pace except some slow golfers somewhere on the course.
Lots of fun and will play again.
