Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Fast greens!!
Great course !! Great food!! Greens are really fast and pins I were in really tough locations. Vey challenging. Really great course
Nice course, diabolical greens
The course itself is nice with a somewhat challenging layout, but the greens are the star of the show, and not in a good way. Everything I read about this course prior to playing was true. The greens are massive and extremely fast, with difficult pin positions. Keep the ball below the hole and you’ve got a chance. There’s also a fair amount of water and trees to keep you honest, so not much room for error if you’re not in the fairway.
Green Speed is No Joke
Was initially skeptical of all the reviews saying the greens were too fast...I should not have been. They're quick, very quick. If you leave yourself above the hole you're dead. After initially getting a little frustrated, it became more amusing at how we had to try to play certain shots. The course was in phenomenal shape and the clubhouse is great. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't been, but it could be a tad more enjoyable/fair if they would slow them down a little.
Disappointed
Makray is a very tough and challenging golf course but the greens are rock hard. They are fast and are not receptive. The condition of the greens really took all of the enjoyment out of our round of golf. Don’t think I’ll be back.
Cool layout a little expensive
Cool layout tough greens and decent conditions. Maybe a tad expensive on the weekend but a good experience
Excellent condition and layout
Great round of golf except for Mr. Man-bun in front of us who was in a class by himself for slow golf.
Beautiful course - very fast and tricky greens
This is a great course and staff are friendly and helpful.
Long and Unfair (at times)
This is a beautiful course that we’ll maintained. The course plays longer than the yardage and you have to drive the ball in the fairway to have a chance. Even then, the greens can be simply unfair!
cash only for practice range- I've never seen that at any other course.. and then they charge you a $3 ATM fee to get cash. so your $3 warm-up bucket actually ends up costing you $6.
At least 8-9 greens had hundreds of pitch marks, most bunkers not raked, and also a LOT of very dry / burned out spots as well. A lot of very good shots will NOT hold the greens here.
Ranger told us we needed to pick up pace on tee box for hole # 8- only 1 hour 40 minutes into our round as a foursome. we finished in 4 hours 20 minutes on a friday afternoon, not sure how much faster they can push it...
I would not play here again, it's not worth the money and the staff wasn't very friednly or welcoming. There are a bunch of courses within 20 -25 minutes of here that are way better value & experience.
Great course, terrible starter experience
I purchased a GolfNow 3:10 PM last week out there and upon arriving join another golfer at that time. We are already on the tee when Tom, the starter comes barreling up. He proceeds to ask a single waiting behind us to join. He’s at 3:30 and said he’d prefer to wait but apparently that wasn’t an option. Then he said well I’m going to need one of you to lose your cart and jump in with one of the other two. I told him our booking never mentioned that nor did the clubhouse.. On top of that, they had 8 fresh carts out and there is still COVID ( why force people to ride together at these times). It gets better.. he says well then you can pay $10 and keep the extra cart. At this point, the other guy gives him $10 as Tom continues to talk during their swings. He proceeds to put the $10 straight into his wallet probably as his last way to try to get under our skin. I called into the head Pro, Don. He apologized and had the same ranger come out and bring the $10 back on the 2nd tee. Instead of saying wow I’m sorry and what can I do; it was more he’s my best starter and he must be having a bad day. I’m sorry like the other guy in my group said, just because he was old doesn’t mean he can get away with that. The most ironic thing, 5 hour round and no ranger in sight all afternoon. I will not be back or play there with friends anymore until they want to right this crappy experience. First 4 holes out there are the best and it was completely ruined. Places around for the same price I’d suggest moving forward: Stonewall Orchard- Cary, IL, Highlands of Elgin, Bowes Creek- Elgin, IL, Blackstone- Marengo, IL
Very Nice Course
Very nice layout and course was in excellent condition. Fairways were cut nicely and traps were properly raked with the right amount of sand. Green were fast and a little hard.
Course played a slow. No ranger and group in front of us were at least 2 holes behind. Should have played in under4 hours instead of the 4.5 hours. Disappointed that not one ranger showed up to ensure groups were keeping pace.
Drink cart was consistently available, which is nice considering the 95 degrees
