Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Staff
This golf experience was very unenjoyable for our group. We were continuously rushed throughout the day by rangers and staff, even though we were always waiting on the group in front of us. I’ve golfed this course many times and always enjoyed it until yesterday’s experience. Great course, awful service. Would not recommend anyone to golf here.
Slow play-6 hour round
Course is decent shape, but pace of play is terrible. Outing in the morning. Understandable that outings are slower. But they were all of the course at 1pm. Our 1:30p tee tee was pushed to 1:50p. Writing review while still having 2 holes to go. And this is a week day. Won’t be back.
A little slow, but good condition. Wish rate was lower
My first time playing this course and the condition was pretty good. Pace of play was slow as we waited on virtually every hole, yet still finished only 30 mins behind pace. At $94 I thought it was a bit steep, but it is Covid times and courses are trying to make up for lost revenue. It’s not that I would t recommend this place, it just wouldn’t be at the top of my list. I’d like to give it another shot on a non-weekend, as perhaps the turn times would be a bit faster.
Give me a break
Nice trac but too many tricked up greens to really make it a great course. On too many holes you really have no place to shoot to. I don't mind fast greens, but the ones with alot of contour are unfair to even putt on. A few alterations and this could be a great course.
Beautiful course
Maintenance of flowers etc really make the course feel peaceful n beautiful. However, I would have not come except for the Hot Deal. Understand maintenance of flowers costs but I think it’s still too expensive overall.
The course was verybwell maintained. Pace of play was good. Cold water bottlea placed at various holes was a nice surprise. The carts were in good working orser including GPS.
Deep Bunkers & Diabolical Greens
Even though I live close, I have always avoided playing Makray due to the horror stories about their fast greens. A twilight round of 9 holes a few years ago confirmed that these stories were in fact true. Fast forward to this weekend where my friends & I (~18-27 handicaps) worked up the courage to give Makray a shot. Long story short, we got murdered when we were on and/or around the greens. Don't leave yourself a downhill putt here! If you do, good luck as they're virtually impossible to make. Be wary of the greenside bunkers too as 50% of them aren't visible on the approach and sit very deep below the greens. If you can avoid those two things, you are in for a great day as everything else about Makray is excellent. Their practice facilities are phenomenal with a grass tee driving range, large putting green, and chipping area with free practice balls. The course itself is in great shape and provides a fine layout that feels relatively secluded and forces players to use almost every club in their bag. If they could slow down their greens a touch, I'd give Makray 5 stars - however, I can't fully recommend that the average golfer torture themselves.
Slow play
Greens are extremely fast and very none forgiving, miss a little bit and bye bye ball. Pace if play was 4:40 but we waited on just about every hole, group in front of us was playing best ball and ruined the pace. It is a tough course no matter what but $76 means I like to play behind good golfers. Basically suntanned on 18th fairway for 10 minutes.
Interesting course
Challenging course with fast inclined greens. Tee boxes and fairways good. Some greens look bad this early in the spring. Lot of dirt areas exposed around cart paths, tees and greens.
Great Track
Course was in great shape. Greens are very fasr but also hold. I could play here every day.
Best Challenge in the area
MaKray still remains the most challenging course in the northwest suburbs, especially with the extremely fast greens and pin placements. The greens were ridiculously fast; possibly due to a lack of water. Being on the wrong side of the pin was almost impossible. The course is in good condition. I recommend the course if you want the ultimate challenge. Every hole is a challenge. It definitively is not a walk in the park!
