Makray Memorial Golf Club
About
Makray Memorial Golf Club (formerly known as Thunderbird Country Club) is a public course that has been open since 1962. To commemorate 40 years of great golf, the course was remodeled and revamped in 2002. The renovations improved its playability and also made it more challenging. The championship-caliber layout features strategically placed bunkers, including some Scottish-style sod-faced ones, and tricky water hazards on several holes. The hilly terrain offers both challenging elevation changes and scenic views. The golf course finishes with a long par 5 that plays across a canyon of berms to a narrow fairway. Further accuracy is needed to reach the well guarded green surrounded by high berms, a pot bunker to the left, and a deep, steep bunker to the right. In addition to the course, Makray Memorial G.C. boasts an extensive practice facility with 1 1/2 acres of grass teeing ground, two putting greens, and a short-game area.

Disappointed in the experience
I typically play Makray only once or twice a year, as I usually play courses that are a little less expensive but consider Makray to be a special round. Unfortunately this round will be my last for some time as I was pretty disappointed with the course's quality. The greens weren't particularly cared for, the tee boxes were mostly sand, and overall the course wasn't as green as I had expected. Pace of play was very slow for an early afternoon round. I had a very strange experience with a starter as well, who picked up both mine and my playing partner's ball on hole 9 out of the fairway and drove away. When we asked why he picked up our balls he claimed he was picking up range balls and got defensive, asking which hole we were on and saying people hit ProV1's from the range occasionally that's why he picked up ours. He eventually gave us back our golf balls without an apology but it was an extremely strange experience. The pro shop and dining is still great and high quality.
Lightning Greens
Course was fun and challenging. Greens were super fast. Very good condition and nice clubhouse..
Staff is so rude!
They advertise $23 for 18 holes on this website and when you call to confirm the staff says it’s an error and they won’t honor it. When I played in May they were so unfriendly as well called to make payment while in the lot. The person who answered said, “well I’m waiting... for the the credit card number!” Don’t play here!
Tough but fair
For an experienced golfer there's tough greens and burly bunkers, while the amateur can hit a wide fairway. Great conditions and maintenance. $50 round where you feel you got value
Great course
Makray is always in good condition. The greens are always quick but roll very true. On weekends, the pace can get slow in the afternoon, but not much worse than any other course in the area. Greens fees are expensive during prime tee times, but they offer various deals throughout the week during different time slots. Overall one of my favorite courses in the area.
Stay below the hole.
Greens are very undulated. It's best to be putting uphill whenever possible. We had a great time and will be back.
Great course for the money on weekdays
Awesome course great for weekday play. I would not recommend for beginners as the greens are fast and everything plays very long.
Great course for weekday play. Weekends might be a little too expensive for an intermediate golfer.
Good value
Layout is wonderful
Greens were beat up as no one seems to fix a ball mark
Bunkers were very thin on sand in the middle and deep around the edges - just need a good reraking to fix
Range can’t hit drivers, fairway woods or hybrids because of the residential houses around
Slow play. Zero help from ranger
Really solid layout. However, at the first tee, the starter said we are full so you have nowhere to go. On the third hole there were groups on the tee, fairway and green with another group on the 4th tee and two more groups on the 2nd hole. Saw rangers on a number of holes and they offered zero help or insight. On the 11th hole, the group in front let us play through. We then discovered a foursome that was holding up the entire course. We skipped the next hole and found that foursome had fallen 3 holes behind the next group. On 18 tee, a ranger came by and said he told that 4some to speed it up finally on the 15th hole. Ridiculous. Do your job.
Good could be Great
1st time playing the course and they layout and challenge are excellent. Advice - move up one tee it is longer than you would think.
Greens were fast and seemed to run out and out and out.
Nice that in several places around the course that they have coolers set up with cold water bottles.
Some head ups
1. There is an ongoing dispute with a home owner so no drivers, fairway woods or hybrids on the driving range - it is irons only..
2. Also it is cash for the ball dispenser machine, so make sure you have cash with you. Same for the concession stand by practice green.
3. They need to fix the bunkers. Middle are washed out and have little sand and the edges are fluffy for buried lies.
4. The greens need some TLC and players need a ball mark repairer as way too may spots on the greens that have been left unrepaired.
Horribly backed up/bad sand
One foursome completely tied up the golf course. Unfortunately, the ranger finally talked to the group on the 16th hole!
Also, the sand in the bunkers, although manicured, was actually razor thin. Probably 1/4” sand and then black dirt. Quite disappointing considering the price paid.
As fun as it is playable...
The course greets you immediately with the nice clubhouse, drop your bag and park. The amenities are numerous and you can spend a good time warming up in the practice area, or just tee it up cold as I did. I was allowed to go off of 10 as a single because 1 tee was backed up. The 10th played up hill and long into a prevailing west wind. The driving areas are pretty generous, premium on approach shots. Greens are modestly quick and not overly sloped. Safe side yourself and avoid the deeper pot bunkers, sand is soft and requires good acceleration. Being a single digit I shot 38 on the back before a storm hit, loved the experience and felt challenged but not over challenged.
Nice, serious golf course and facility
Great, beautiful place. All around. Very well maintained and challenging layout. We play here often and we’re never disappointed with the experience. Except- the greens are tough enough without them having to be stimped over 10. Most down hill putts are impossible to stop anywhere near the hole. For most that play the course you’d want to keep that tough but not super tough to the point of too much frustration..
slow pace
It would have been perfect if the pace was not too slow. I will still going to come back but I do hope they can do something about the slow pace...
