Ironwood Golf Course
About
Ironwood Golf Club has the distinction of being named one of Golf Digest's "Best Places to Play." Owned by the city of Gainesville, this popular course hosts more than 50 tournaments year. The course winds through a scenic landscape covered with century-old pines and sparkling lakes. Don't be surprised if you're joined by the wildlife that calls the course home, which includes deer and wild turkeys. The layout will keep you guessing with interesting twists and turns. The elevated greens have dramatic drops from front to back, making them a challenge to read. There are strategically placed bunkers throughout Ironwood Golf Club, as well as thick rough along the fairways. The obstacles combined with some tricky doglegs will make you think twice about swinging the driver too freely. Strategy, not strength, is the key to doing well on this course.

Nice course
This is a nice course. Can be challenging. The greens were not in the greatest condition. They are usually much better. Will play here again. Hope they attend to the greens.
Don't Bother
I must say, I see this course with 3.5 stars and I'm baffled. First the good. The layout is one of the best I've played in a long time. Water on a number of holes, but not too difficult to avoid. Good doglegs, some fairways narrower and tree lined, some more wide open. Some tough traps. I guess I would call it an "interesting" layout. Not just cookie cutter up and back holes. The greens and sand traps are actually pretty good, so no problem there.
The Bad.-- The problem with this course, is that the fairways are ATROCIOUS and the "rough" is just as bad. I'm no expert on florida grass for fairways, but I do know that decent and better courses overseed with an annual rye to compensate for the summer grass going dormant. Ironwood either doesn't overseed or tries to get by with a minimum of seed which is far less than they need. It is impossible to find a even a one foot section of fairway that isn't either dead, dying or dirt. The "rough" is more dirt than grass. GOLF IS MEANT TO BE PLAYED ON GRASS THAT IS ALIVE AND GROWING. Now, maybe the course is better in the summer and fall, but they should just close it in the winter.
Descent course
The grounds were
In great shape. When I played in the morning it was very cold so the first couple holes,
Putting surface like Velcro but it soon warmed up and then they rolled quick. Grounds staff immensely friendly,
But the young
Lady Erin who works the bar/counter was the opposite, making me wait, not acknowledging customers standing waiting for food or drink or something from the pro shop. Ridiculous! Otherwise the experience was great and you should play here if you are in the area.
solid muni
greens roll nice, fairways spotty, beverage cart girl was pretty and freindly, wht more could you want.
Great hot deal value
Played for $17 (with fees), wouldn't pay a dollar more though. Good value for the time of year and versus $40 at bostick. Will definitely be playing here more often but only if I can get hot deal discount.
What a steal for $11
You cant beat the Hotdeal Tee Times for this quality of course in this Area. I paid $11.00 for 18
Good layout, good greens, fun game
I had a wonderful afternoon at Ironwood. Pretty good price for a great round. Pretty good greens, too.
Great value
Course is very well maintained and in good condition. Great course for not playing in a while
Course needs better overall drainage
Course is a nice test for everyday amateurs but until drainage issues are addressed it makes the overall course conditions below average. Fairways were not consistent throughout and greens were showing wear and tear from the heat and humidity. Would play again as certain times of the year the course does play better. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Depends on the weather...
I've played this course about 6 times and the condition is completely reliant on the past week or so weather. If it's been dry then just pick up your ball at the green but if there has been good rain you should really enjoy the course. Great contours, challenging pin positions and tee box placements.
In good shape for a municipal course
The starter Neil Sapp helped me and my partner to feel welcome. The cart girl was friendly. Greens were in good shape. Back side of course has more sun so was drier overall. An enjoyable round of golf especially for a city-owned course.
Very nice course in Gainesville
Played here in November and now in April. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and the fairways and greens were in good shape for northern FL. The bunkers and water hazards add good challenges and I enjoyed playing here both times. Momma alligator and babies were out on the 14th this time around; Makes for interesting playing around that hole.
Great Course great staff
We enjoyed our round. The course was in great shape.
The staff was extremely friendly. We would play there again.
The course is a good value
We enjoyed our two rounds here. The layout provides for diverse club selection & fairways are wide to help the average golfer. No waiting whatsoever.
Ironwood GC
Nice course. Not too crowded today so afternoon hotdeal was great. Played in around three hours with some waiting on back nine. Layout pretty straight forward with accurate tee markers and fairway yardages. They use the flag on the pin method for green pin position, OK since you can visually see where the pins are on pretty much all the greens. Tees good, fairways require a litle of a roll for a good lie, bunkers looked good and there are quite a few on each hole but I wasn't in one all day. Greens pretty nice, fully grassed but SLOW, either putt was left just short or just didn't take a break. Greens all have some slopes that really would make putting difficult if the greens were cut shorter. From the fairways greens present a nice appearance since they are are slightly elevated with shaved fringes! Nice course, everyone I met was very nice. Clubhouse small but well put together, would of liked to have a couple of after round drinks but I had a little drive in front of me. Recommend.
Not worth the money
This course is way overrated. The fairways were rock hard and chewed up in some places, and muddy in others. We played on a Sunday and it hadn't rained since Tuesday. I like the layout of the course, but I will never play this course again. The starter was extremely rude. My friend and I had a tee time, we hit some balls and were late getting to the tee box. We were then told that my group had already left. We were not told that they paired us with a single. The starter then told us it would be 30 more minutes because there was a foursome and three fivesomes that needed to go. There was several people upset because we were waiting and we had a golf cart. The course was out of carts and had to keep waiting for people to finish before anyone could get carts. This was a horrible experiance.
Great value
The course was in fair condition at best, as it had heavy rains recently, so it was cart path only. Pace of play was excellent, the greens very receptive and with a great deal thru golfnow, made a good day of golf all around
Lots of play
really like the new layout. Wish the greens would be rolled and cut shorter. Had a lot of fun playing with my family which included 2 junior players and the staff encouraged them that they are welcome anytime.
Challenging layout with great wildlife
Fun and challenging course but does not drain well. Sand traps very wet. Greens firm but receptive. Staff friendly and helpful. Check golfnow for discounts or call course for specials
