Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
Great public course
A little slow, but by far the best public course I've played in NYC
Nice round
Played Split Rock. The course was in good shape and the round was very enjoyable.
Good first outing
I enjoyed the 3.5 hour round, finished the front 9 in 1:25 minutes. The guys I grouped up with were pretty cool too. Going to play Split Rock this weekend.
This course is not easy to play as it looks.
This course is very flat and wide. You are tempted to hit longer, but once you miss the fairway, you must pay the penalty by losing your balls.I played there in November and lost a quite lot of balls hidden underneath of piles of dead leaves.
Good track needs maintenance
Split Rock is an excellent track, but many of the fairways were covered by leaves on a calm day, making it very frustrating looking for balls. Most golf courses now have blowers that take care of this. The greens were also very hairy and looked like they needed work. With some more attention to these details, it would be a better experience.
Average
Greens aerated at the end of sept. Course showing the wear of the season on the greens particularly. A few tee boxes more dirt than grass. Pace of play always an issue on weekends and holidays. All that being said I will play there again just because it's close to Manhattan and it's an easy course. Better putting/chipping area that most NYC public courses.
Decent city course
A couple of greens were in dire need of fixing up, as there was more sand then grass at hole 3. The fairways were great, a couple of slow players, but they werent' making them into full foursomes. It's a forgiving course, but make sure you bring your fairway woods, unless you can drive the ball 250+yards., Very friendly staff, i look forward to playing there agin.
Course layout is good-poorly maintained greens.
I would not recommend to anybody to play this course. Greens are horriblly maintained.
Greens were good besides 3 holes which were airated. Pace of play was slow and we didn't tee off on time. But it was a good course overall.

Great Muni Course!
Golf course was in great shape except for 3 aerated greens and 1 dead green. Wide forgiving fairways, fast greens. Fun course to play.
This a great course, especially for Bronx Residents.
I love coming to Pelham/Split Rock. As a beginner golfer, it is a great course that has some challenging holes but not too many. The course is maintained, except some of the greens (please rehab). You get a lot of bang for your buck when you book the Hot Tee Times on Golfnow. Will be playing here often, I live right down the road!
SR - Love the course distance. Greens are in awful condition
I have played Split Rock many times. Always challenging bc of the distance. Experience was greatly affected recently bc of the greens. Very sandy. Could only recall one green in somewhat good condition. Much rather spend $70 on one of the shorter Westchester courses. Hopefully SR will be back next year to the condition I've been used to over the years.
Great option in the greater NYC area
Pelham Bay is a forgiving links-style course, yet it has reasonable length--not a pitch and put by any means--with some challenging par 4's and 5's and for the most part is very well maintained. Together with it's more challenging 7000+ yard sister course--Split Rock--it is part of a nice 36 hole facility in the north Bronx in the City Island/Orchard Beach area. Except for the jets flying overhead periodically you'd never know you were in the City. Can be a bit crowded on the weekend, though. Best on a weekday or late afternoon.
Great condition
This course was in great condition and the staff was very friendly. We finished out round in 3 1/2 hours. I would definitely recommend this course to a friend.
Best public NYC course - SPLIT ROCK
This review is for split rock. The course is easily the best public NYC course. It plays like an average country club course minus the greens, which have some problems. It is fun and at times challenging. It plays around 6700 yards and makes you work to score.
Course was in good shape moved well, there were two greens that needed attention other than that the course played well

OK course, Nickle and Dime costs
As an out-of-town golfer I decided to play both courses last Saturday and Sunday. Walked 18 for both and enjoyed the round. Saturday's round on Pelham was perfect and Sunday's round on Split Rock played a little slow but was enjoyable. Both courses are in OK Shape. Greens and tee boxes need some work on both. The negative to playing here is you get nickle and dimed. Not only do you have to pay the Green's fee but you also have to pay $3 to park (no other option available) and $4 to make a tee time. I have NEVER heard of any course charge to MAKE a tee time. Maybe it's a NY thing??? Adding seven dollars to your day to me makes a difference. I would be more accepting if they just upcharged the green's fee and didn't tell me i was paying for parking and just to make a te time. Probably won't go back because of the extra charges...
Greens
The greens were in great shape for this time of the year.
Average Course
Only reason I played this course because I was in the area and found a hot deal. I'm glad I didn't pay the regular rate. The course is average. Several greens need a ton of work. Not much of organization to start your round. Carts are just scattered all over (dirty as well). For the positives, fairways were in good condition, pace of play was fast, and there are some challenging holes. Course is forgiving as it is wide open. I would probably play this course again only on a hot deal.
