Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
Value for money not too tough
First time I have played here, and for $40 definitely money well spent.
Even though it was a Sunday, the course was pretty quiet and we walked straight on and teed off slightly ahead of our booked time (1.08)
Course condition on the whole was very good, the greens had been hollow tined, but were still running smooth for the most part (only 2 of the greens were patchy and unpredictable).
The teeing areas could do with work on most holes, the tee markers did not always line up with the direction of aim, and maintenance of them was patchy at best.
The course itself isn't particularly difficult. Its fair, and if you play well, you'll score well. The rough can be heavy and the trees are well placed to punish if you go off target. I really enjoyed it.
Oh and watch out for the local wildlife. As we were holing out on #1, a coyote walked up to us on the green looking for food!!
ridiculous greens
pin placement was for expert golfers.city courses should be more golfer freindly
Pace of play
It was a bit slow for us yesterday. I think they need the marshall out there to speed up play. There was no mobil food cart at all. Course wazs in great shape especially the greens! Good job
First Time
Decent course, not a fan of the aerated greens. Not a lot of woods, which I loved. No driving range. I'd go again for the money and proximity to my home.
What a prize
I have been golfing for 55 years, mostly MUNYs. In the past decade these courses have taken major steps in quality. The greens are beautiful, even though they were aerated on Monday. The fairways were in good shape. As on most courses this time of year the rough is rough and hard. Traps could use some fluffing.Think back to pro BP Black open and the major changes in local golf. This may not be country club or resort but they are very good. You shouldn't rate a course after a bad round one to two stars wake up dude this is a fun course.
Always fun, except for mosquitos!
These facilities have 2 golf courses: Pelham and Split Rock. I've played both many times, but this time playing on Split Rock was extra special as I played with an old friend that I haven't seen for 3 years!
The course is not in the best shape, but it has some challenging holes as well as some easy ones. If played from the back, it will test your skills! The best part of this course is the updated pro shop and hall, where many social events take place!
*Pelham is easier, and in better condition*
Good course for beginner
Wide open and forgiving. Nice fairways, ball always teed up. Rough not too bad.
Play early
We had a 5:52 tee time. Played 18 in under 4 hrs. Have played there later and took 5 hrs. Wide fairways at Pelham , very forgiving.
Old Classic
Great old course. Always enjoyable. Long rounds, but worth the wait. The one thing that stood out most was the Civil War tree on hole 9 that's no longer there! What a shame. Sandy sure did a number on our city...
Very badly run
On the day in question myself and a friend arrived at the course and were paired up with another 2 guys, who just so happened to take forever tee off hit the ball 60 yards and take at least 5 mins between shots, the starter then sent the group behind us in front off us to the 2nd tee box instead of doing something about the problem in hand. This course needs to hire starters who are not in their 80s and have all their senses. Absolute joke turned around and headed back for the clubhouse after the first hole. Disgrace
Nice but not exciting
You quickly forget you are in the Bronx on this wide open course with fun undulating greens. Challenges include a few long par 4's and tiered greens. The round was long. We played at 10:30 and ended at 3:30. The second 9 opened up without delay. It is not the most scenic of courses but for a fun round where you should be able to score low its a good day.
1st time Pelham Bay
Got paired up with a kid my oldest sons age, great company. Course was a bit rough and the greens inconsistent, but OK. Very lovely setting and it was pretty straightforward.
I understand that for a Saturday it was very empty, but being the 4th of July weekend probably had to do with that.
Will play again.
Also booked through Golf Now and paid 10 dollars less than my partner who booked through the course.
Trying to improve the pace of play
I haven't played here in years but came back after a friend invited me with an early tee time (7:40). Decided to come back again after having a 4 1/2 hour round. This time the tee time was 9:15 AM. It was pretty brutal as it took 5 1/2 hours to play. Most likely because the 2 groups of ahead of us had no or little golf experience. 3 out of barely got it pass the ladies tee and the 4th hooked out of bounds. To the credit of the rangers they stayed on top of this group. Yes, Pelham has rangers roaming around. They are trying to improve the pace of play which is great. This ranger followed this group for at least 6 holes. Otherwise, I find the course to be in great shape, and fun to play. Easily walkable course as well.
Splitrock
The course was in great shape. Can't wait to plat it again.h
Beautiful Course
Great course; fair price!!! It's a great course. The only drawback was there was an outing the same day and now one advised us in advance. Should have been posted on line in advance.
No water
It was probably the hottest day of the year and by the back nine there wasn't a drop of water to be had and slow play didn't help...we were playing with an elderly gentleman and we had no water till we were finished and we only seen the snack girl once which was the 2nd hole... On hot days the coolers need to be refilled
Too expensive for a 5 hr rd
Place is nice. Round was way too long and too expensive for a 5 hr round. It was overbooked at 640 am
Ridiculously slow
Teed off at 12:45, by 3:15 (2.5 hours later) I had just finished 6. First two holes probably took an hour. They had warned us it was a 5.5 hr round but this was on pace for 7+. Rains came and thankfully allowed me to pack it in. Play this course in the off season if looking for a decent inexpensive option in NYC area. Avoid at any potentially busy time.
So much potential, so disappointing
Split Rock has a great layout, but is an example of poor management. It was May 18 and the rough had still not been mowed. I played 13 holes, was at the 5 hour mark and walked in. Every group spent 10 minutes on every hole looking for balls, the greens rolled like a tee box.
The Pro shop staff is nice, the starters are nice, but the superintendent should be replaced. Clearly he was the guy who finished last in his class if he even has a turf management degree.
People should stop playing until they improve the conditions. Whatever company is running the course should be fired and the city should hire someone who actually cares.
