After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Course is in good shape.
Started our round at about 6:30am and finished in 3 hours.
The course always plays at a good pace.
Tee Boxes
It’s embarrassing that after years, years the first tee box is still a driving range mat with a pristine box that they dare call the putting green behind it. Several other tee boxes were dirt or patchy grass at best, fairways are fine and greens are in good condition.
disappointed
this course used to be so beautiful really fell off so sad not only is the staff useless the carts smell bad and the fairways are ruff kids cleaning the carts was wearing crocs on his phone in the corner couldn't care less i was there really sad dunwoodie sprain really beats this corse by a mile is super sad
Tee boxes are bad
Tee boxes were terrible fairways were OK greens were in decent shape but slow and the pace of play was very slow but they have great polish sausage at the turn
Potentially great course
I played as part of a twosome and it took us 5 hours to get through 18 on a Saturday afternoon. Besides that and some tee boxes in need of a little TLC, this course was fun. It’s not too long and greens were in really good shape. Most of the holes are tree lined and there’s some undulation to contend with, but it’s manageable, even for a bad golfer like myself. I’ll definitely come back, though maybe on a weekday to avoid some of the rush.
Good experience
Course was in fair condition some tee boxes were a little rough. Overall very good experience
Nice Course
Overall I had a good time here. This course forces you to shape Shots and plan where you want to be for your next shot. The tee boxes need work. Fairways were in decent shape. Greens mostly ok.
finally a good course to play in city
first time here, nice course to give yourself self-esteem, and not too difficult for beginners. Took 5+ hrs only because group of 2-4somes ahead were weekend warriors (could have gone past 1, but not 2 groups). greens were slower than expect, so tended to over-read lots of putts, but look out next round.
Lower Your Expectations
For a course renowned for being the oldest public course in the country, this course does not live up to expectations because of its I'll maintained conditions, tee to green. The NYC course in general charge ridiculous fees for sub-par golf courses, and Van Cortland is no exception. $80 to play a on fairways that are a tier above cow-pasture. It's 50/50 that your ball will come to lie on grass or a patch of dirt. Sand traps are dirt. Greens are inconsistent and patched. Tee boxes are a cleared out piece of grass at best. Don't waste your $, make the effort and get out of NYC to golf.
A Gem of a Golf Course
I have been playing this golf course for years and I continue to enjoy the challenge. I tell everyone that you will use every club in your bag. This is an old time course layout. Enjoy your round.
