After half the groups had teed off and there was still 4 or 5 in front of us. And we were on time. Photo submitted by null on 09/25/2014
Super Slow
The pace of play here was awful. The foursome in front of our twosome didn’t allow us to pass & the ranger didn’t ask them to pick up the pace. No way I’ll play here again.
The First tee box was a mat. That was my only issue. Everything else was great. Course is in awesome shape.
It took too long to play.
We had a 1:32 tee time and we did not finish until 7:30- BRUTAL!!!!!!
Van Courtland golf
The course is a fun and challenging course. It requires some accurate shots but it is forgiving at times. You have to use all the clubs in your bag. It long enough to be tough and short enough to be fun.
I played with two great guys that the course teamed me up with. They played the course regularly and knew all the spots to hit the ball. I have played it several times before and will play it again.
refund my greenfee 90$

A very mixed bag
Played today for the first time in about eight years. First, the good: The pace of play was excellent (3:40) owing to the heat and getting out early in contrast to the six hour rounds that are common there.. The greens are in excellent conditions. Can’t beat $35 “senior” rate. Staff is friendly and helpful. Second, the bad: Tee boxes are a mess, and the first tee box is so bad, one has to use a mat. Fairways are also in sad shape and grass, where there is some, is too long. At least half the cart paths are broken, frost-heaved, etc. Carts run, but are old and decrepit.
Until the course gets fixed up, I can’t see going back or recommending it. With a modest investment, Vanny could be a four star experience.
Excellent Course
Great day,the course is fun and challenging also well kept.My foursome was done in 3:50 which is incredible for a public course in NYC.Cant wait to go back.
NYC golf
Enjoyed my round, hadn’t played here for about 10 years. Nice clubhouse upgrade in the meantime. Reasonable prices for food and drinks. Friendly starter tees off right on time. The greens are nice if a little slow, I’m used to faster greens. Tee boxes and fairways a little inconsistent and patchy. Probably because the course gets a lot of play. Its a fair test of golf and you can score well if your game is on.
25 minutes from midtown Manhattan, $74 with cart on the weekend so the green fee is getting up there but I enjoyed the round. Tee time was 7:48am and we got round in 4 1/2 hours which is quick for a NYC course
not stung
excellent course condition except first tee box lost two balls not because of an errant shot but the hornets swarming around at several holes just left them behind and dropped. Shame because they ruined what was an excellent day into just good
Good bang for the buck!
Done a nice job keeping this historic course in good shape...lot of rain day before and very little standing water..will play again
NY City Golf Course - Van Cortlandt Park
This is a typical NY City park course. Overused and bad fairways.
It's cheap and easy to get to by subway.
So the average cost for me, a senior, is $35 during the week. Add in the cost of the subway two ways and it's a no brainer to play at Van Cortlandt for me.
The people who play here are generally friendly and most medium grade golfers.
This course is getting better
Overall, I felt their green was becoming better. They need to do a better job shaving and pressing it, but conditions overall was better than last time i was here. Tee boxes are slowly becoming better, but still needs work. Rained the night before but overall was well drained.
Good place for short game practice.
Bronx gem
I played vancortland golf course many years ago, so it was nice to go back. The course was in excellent condition and challenging as ever. The greens were phenomenal and the overall beauty of the course is remarkable. I would certainly recommend playing it.
Great City Course, Need to fix Pace of Play
After living in the city for almost two years I decided to try out Van Cortland and Mosholo. Van Cortland offered a more challenging course that is a pleasant convenience near the city. Overall course conditions were in good shape although it seemed the course had not been cut in some time due to weather in the past week.
A challenge that ruined the round enjoyment for me was mostly around pace of play. From the first tee box we were met with a 3 group pile up and the ranger seemed unphased by those on the tee taking multiple mulligans until they hit a playable ball. We did not see a single ranger monitoring pace of play after that hole other than to remind us not to drive on one of the wetter holes. My round with 3 other average golfers took over 6 hours. After making the turn I noticed hardly anyone teeing off at twilight rates, I would assume there was no chance they would even get 9 holes in, smart people. Course should really consider spacing out tee times a few minute and having rangers throughout the course with offering friendly reminders about pace of play, I would have never thought my 1pm tee time would be challenging sunlight on the first days of summer.
Overall, good course but won’t go back unless it’s first tee time of the day or course improves pace of play.
