Tough but beautiful
Love this course. Narrow fairways, rolling, undulating greens. Well maintained. Will be back
One of my favorites
I play St Germain public course every year upon my venture to the great north woods. It’s one of my favorite courses anywhere and is in outstanding condition. Most of the fairways are tight and plenty of thinking and ‘playing smart’ from the tees will definitely aid in keeping the numbers down. If you have a chance, play the course, you won’t be disappointed!
a beautiful course
ST Germain was in great condition - greens, fairways and tees. Nice sand in the traps, which fortunately I only visited once. They don't have hard liquor in the snack shack or on the beverage cart.
Love the improvements
I was a Vilas County resident from 2007-2014 and would play St. Germain quite often during that time. After moving out of state, this was my first time back since 2014. The course has introduced a lot of improvements out there. The greens are running very smooth and true. The fairways have been cut lower and the density makes for better ball roll and good lies. The practice facility near the entry is much improved and it appears they have also added a chipping/pitching area near the snack shop at the turn. Great to see the town taking the next step toward making this course one of the best in the area. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the Northwoods!
Beautiful Course
I have been visiting this area for decades and to this day, St. Germain is one of my favorite courses to play. It is challenging as you will lose your ball if you stray from the fairways with the thick woods and pin placements include a variety of slopes to overcome. Most of the holes are very scenic and the course is always well kept. The pace of play is typically quick but I admittedly usually play during the week when I am in town, which is usually less busy. They have a nice warm up area. One of my few constructive criticisms would be that the carts do not have yardage built into them. Clearly a non-factor if you have a range finder but FYI. I would not suggest walking this course as some of the holes are quite hilly.
Overall, definitely recommend.
Tremendous
This course is very well taken care of. Be conservative off a few tees and it is fun for all ages. We brought the family out and had a very nice afternoon. Good meal afterward at the Whitetail Inn. Hope to be back in late September!
Great northwoods golf course, scenery is excellent everything you expect
As advertised...
The recent reviews hold true on this place. Great conditioning and playability. The greens are receptive but can be sneaky fast with some hole locations out there. Bunkers are fair and well placed. Good roll in the fairways. Upkeep always will make this place worth a visit. We all agreed in our group of 12 that overgrown trees are taking away a fair chance on many of the tee boxes, both whites and blues. (Think disc golf course atmosphere at some early holes on front 9 and then again on late holes on the back). Be prepared to bring many balls or hit plenty of irons to work your shot. Roots have buckled some cart paths also, go slow if you have anything more than half a beer in your cup holder on board! Slow play ahead of us was a result of first time players that probably should have instead gone across the street to the goat track Whitetail course. All in all, always worth a round or two each year and would recommend again and again.
Great course.
Great course. Needed ranger on front. Skipped a hole to get around A VERY slow foursome.
Beautiful course
Fun and challenging, slow play for first 9 holes, then better. Staff is terrific!!
First time out at St. Germain.
Higher end public course feel with tee to green conditioning to match. Beautiful clubhouse, nicely laid out driving range/practice areas which are in close proximity to first tee. We probably picked the busiest time of the year to come out and play but the experience is worth it. Pace of play lagged at times but most of that could be solved with golf etiquette and common sense from the groups ahead. Thinning out some trees out there near tee boxes and opening up landing zones would probably help with that also. People these days just won’t let a 50 cent Top Flite go unfound. If you miss the fairway there isn’t much rough to stop your ball from going into the woods. The overhanging tree branches gobble up everything else when teeing off on a few holes early on and then later on the stretch. A common sound is the impact of a driver followed shortly but the clunk of a ball hitting a tree. Wildlife was great, right after making the turn we had a doe and two fawns cross the fairways 20 yards ahead. Beer cart caught up with us a handful times to restock adult beverages on a balmy day. Had fun playing a little scramble together, good roll on greens. Overall, very pleased, and will make it part of our rotation this fall.
