Outstanding all the way around
Just started playing St. Germain this year. This was my 3rd time out this season. I am a +8 and this place can find a way to test you. I’ve played the blue tees twice and most recently the whites on Sunday. The place plays very different from the blues for anyone looking at the total yardage, don’t be fooled as the distance isn’t a huge factor. The big difference is the lane you have to hit off of the blues is extremely narrow and at times borderline insane. Overgrown trees choke you out on probably half a dozen or so tees shots and probably four of those could be said the same for the whites. This is about all I can say for somewhat of a negative on the layout end of things. Otherwise this place has some of the best conditions a modern day Muni could ask for. Always been greeted with friendliness and helpful staff. Fun place to bring friends and family for a good meal afterward in the big old growth Log Themed restaurant. Electric carts are whisper quiet and crazy fast! Just have to talk my wife into moving up there now and join as a member. You won’t be disappointed, just have to be able to work the ball both ways with an iron to successfully tee off from some blue tees!
Great course
Enjoyed our round as staff was friendly and the course was in wonderful condition
Absolutely one of the most stunning course s ever played ....
Visiting St. Germain
Front 9 is breathtaking and the course conditions are immaculate. The back nine is very gimky especially 18th hole. They need to consider taking trees out near green to make it a risk reward shot.
Enjoyable golf
St Germain was in excellent condition. Smooth, fast greens. It's one of my favorite courses in north central Wisconsin.
Need your A game
If you want to score well, you need to hit it straight. Fairways are pretty tight with there is not much chance for recovery if you hit in the tree/bush lined fairways. Great challenge. Elevated greens that are in superb shape. They roll true and are quite large. Many unique holes. A great challenge and a joy to play..
Really good spot
Spending some time up north to avoid the headaches going on elsewhere. First time out on St. Germain and this place is in excellent shape. We would definitely like to come back later this summer. Very tight course as expected cut out of a forest. Forgiving fairways and greens help keep the ball in play. We played mid-morning and the greens had started to pick up pace by the 5th hole. Our group agreed on a dry and windy day they could prove to be a challenge with all the slope that is out there.
The course was packed with people that I’m sure were escaping the craziness around our country right now. Play came to a halt 2 or 3 times but seemed to get back to normal after people got done playing nine.
A couple suggestions for the once or twice a month golfer from outside the region: Ask ranger attendant/first tee dispatcher to keep some space when people are starting out their round. Some folks don’t like that direct presence watching your every move and then advice suggesting how to do better next time. Also, we tend to follow other course’s Facebook pages for specials, course photos and updates. We are driving 7 hours one way and like to have some background info and visuals ahead of time. You have a beautiful golf course, show it off and get some more follows.
All in all, we can’t wait to come back and maybe grab a fish fry in their restaurant. Cheers!
New experience
It has been some time since we played golf up in the Northwoods. 2013 was the last we got out on St. Germain. Our group left very impressed with this place. Read some reviews from the last few years and the buzz holds true. Conditions compare with many top dollar suburban courses throughout the state and Midwest. Enjoyed the layout as always, some very tight holes where the trees are starting to limit you off the tee, but other areas on the course you can tell have been opened up a bit to help with the overgrowth. Good roll on the fairways and the greens were a treat. The Northwoods is in full time summer mode right now and we hope to be back at the end of the month for another round or two. Well done!
Tough Course, Great Layout
St. Germain is very tight in places. Hitting the fairway is very important if you want to score. The conditions of the course are very good considering harsh winters. Only Plum Lake Golf Club has better conditions in the Northwoods. Great variety of holes that challenge the best golfer.
A good find in Wisconsin
Awesome track up north. Still a pretty young course but forest setting quickly keeps you honest off the tee on the first 4 holes. Local or prior knowledge is a big help on a handful of the holes. Conditions were worthy of this place’s reputation, tee to green just outstanding. We played St. Germain as part of our five day fall golf trip. Good fall colors to boot!
On the right path
We are long time Boulder Jct. summer residents. After years of jumping around to neighboring courses, the local “muni” St. Germain gets our vote for the best around. The grandkids are typically with us and have no problem playing from the forward tees (ages 8 and 12). This is a family friendly facility and very navigable for all ages. Conditions always provide a fair and consistent experience. Fall colors already starting up NORT!
Never again!
This course is the perfect example of the over-designed layout that is ruining golf today. With the majority of the greens elevated and some ridiculously so, you would think that there would be an avenue to hit a reasonable approach shot to the green. Not here! Most of the holes on this course have no fairway to the green, with the last 50-70 yards an uphill mountainside of rough, so that anything other than the perfect shot gets caught up with no chance to get on. Ridiculous layout, stupid tight off the tee in places, and play was terribly slow. If you want nearly 5 hours of frustration, this is the golf course for you!
Great Course
Unbelievable course setting with beautiful scenery, not a house on the course that is cut thru the Northwoods. The course is priced fairly comparatively to courses of the same caliber in Urban areas. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The teaching pro is one of the best. Highly recommend!!
Really really good
First timer here, this place was impressive. Course has beautiful views throughout the holes. The facility has good practice areas and electric carts were a nice touch. Conditions would rival many courses in the state. Hope to come back up for fall colors and another round with the boys!
Wish we lived closer
We have a residence in Rice Lake and were visiting friends for the weekend. This is a very fun place to visit. A bit weary of heading out on a Friday during peak vacation time but in the end it was worth it. The course has a few border-line "hitting out of a shoot" tee shots right away on #2 and #3, and somewhat #4. After that it opens up pretty good until you get onto 14-18. For a town-run facility, they definitely are overachieving given the conditions and modern appeal. Having worked at a county course in Ohio for 9 years, these smaller populated areas usually have the tightest budgets and limited resources. This course is refreshing with the fact that you are not bombarded with flashy stakes, divot buckets, rope obstacles, etc...you get the picture. It is a uniform golf course with a fair set up. We played in just under 5 hours with small waits at 6 or 7 holes. The service was very good during our outing. Looking at what it costs to join, just as the title says...wish we lived closer! We'll be back again! Thank you
Try it,you’ll like it
Awesome Northwoods course. Beautiful setting and well maintained course. Try this one, you won’t be disappointed. Very friendly staff!
Favorite course
This is a beautiful, well maintained golf course. No houses on the course is an added bonus. Truly a Northwoods beauty. The course is in beautiful condition and the staff is very friendly. I am a member at a different course but playing here a few times a summer because I love this course!!
A must play!
Do not let the “Municipal” tag fool you. This course has evolved into a top location north of Wausau. We were treated to a great weather day while up on a weekend getaway. Busy round teeing off around 9:30 am but were allowed to play through on hole 8. Great craft beer selection and enjoyed the employee interactions. Course conditions were fantastic and greens were held at a manageable pace. Please make a point to grab a round here, it is a fun loop through the woods with plenty of seclusion. Clubhouse dining has weird hours afterward but they let you head over to the halfway snack hut for food and beers after your round if desired.
I think you have the wrong course. While a couple holes are elevated, they all have well groomed fairways and aprons leading to the greens. The greens are neither too large or too small. You can land an approach shot on the green and it will stick. This is one of my favorite courses, beautifully maintained and fun to play.
