Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
Great Hot Deal
Great Hot Deal at $50/player. The course was really wet from the rain the night before but besides that it was in excellent shape. The staff was friendly and the cart girl came by regularly. It did take 4hrs to play for a twosome which was a lot slower than I’d hoped for but with it being cart path only that was to be expected. With deals like this I’ll definitely be back to play again.
Great Course
As usual the course is in great condition, even though they’re still in the overseeding process. Pace of play was slow, but that’s because of cart path only, which was expected with overseeding. However, price was over 50% off of normal, can’t beat that for a course like this.
Steve H.
Awesome course, even though it was wet the course was in great shape. Will play it again soon.
Fun course ! Getting ready for tour play early . Greens were fine but fairways were wet due to fertilization and it was cart path only for this reason.Sounds like this will continue up until tournament time, so plan on a little extra walking! Overall a good experience with the deal we got from Golf Now !!
Pro Shop Staff - rude, condescending
Course is what you would expect for a premier championship course in winter. Overseeded grass was mostly ok but as you get closer to your ball, lots of bare areas, sparse grass. December golf conditions - slow greens.
It is what it is for December.
Most outstanding memory is the rudeness of the Pro Shop Staff. This does not appear to be a new thing, reading some historical reviews. The clubhouse serves the Member course also so non-members are treated like second class citizens by shop staff. Club manager needs to get a grip of the customer service side. Sam & Scott (?) just plain rude.
Site of Shell Houston Open
Love the layout. Played during overseeding so a little wet and greens somewhat slow. Cart path only also. Will be in excellent shape when winter grass comes in.
Amazing
Getting to play on a professional tournament course was awesome. Especially for the price
Probably awesome around Open time
I feel like this course would be great close t when the open is played there, but they probably spend 8 months of the year updateing, repairing and prepping. Definitely need to call first to check course conditions and events.
I scheduled a round, not knowing they had a tournament going on ahead of me. After 2 & 1/2 hours, 8 holes, and unable to get into a rhythm, that was enough for me.
That said, best greens I’ve ever putted on, and very friendly staff.
Great Course
I had a super time.
This course will humble your game.
Stay focus at all times especially on those short putts.
Course in great condition
The staff was very friendly and professional and the course was well manicured! Will be back!
Course Conditions in August
I played the first week of August. I got a "hot deal" on golfnow, for $52/player before tax & fees. Came out to be $59 total. The course is temporarily not requiring a forecaddie after 11a. The tournament course is never at its best during the summer, so my expectations are reasonable. However, with all the recent rains, the fairway grass was very good. The ball would sit up nicely.
There were not "dry pan" areas. The course is known for their greens. However, the greens were recently aerated so the greens were very bumpy and the grass was pretty thick. It took a few holes before I got the feel for how hard to hit the ball. For less than $60 it was a very great deal.
Do it.
Great course. Don't expect it to look like the Houston Open. Months of hard work go into that week. It is still one of the best experiences you can have. Titlesits range balls complimentary.
Great course miserable experience
While in town for a convention, I was able to get away for the afternoon and play for 50 using Golfnow. Getting to play the same course as the pros was a highlight. Temperatire was 95 with 60%humidity, typical Houston day. Course is cart path only, I thought because maybe wet but marshall said to protect course. So if you dont stay near paths, get ready to walk, alot. Now for the misery. There is 1 , yes one water station on the course at holes 2 and 11. Its a restroom/water station where the holes merge. Other than that the only chance to get water is mini clubhouse beyween 9 and 10. I play courses in DFW, Austin, Waco and they all have igloo coolers and cone cups every 3 or so holes. This course has none. When I was done one of the pros asked how my round went and as obviously dehydrated I was, slurred speech and soaked clothing, all he could do was chuckle, tell me there is " ample water out there" and tell me he can hopefully rectify this for my next time. Next time? Not unless its an 80 degree or less day. If you play in the summer take your own cooler of water you will need it. To Golf club, build some wooden birdhouses for some igloos and take care of your golfers as much as you take care of your course. Your course is great, your experience is miserable
Shell Houston Open Course
I would like to start off by saying this is in no way a reflection of the course, but rather a lack of communication between the club house and the Golfnow app. My wife normally comes with me to the course to watch and enjoy the surroundings, but when we were checking in the club house informed me that there would be a $25.00 spectator fee for my wife to join me on the cart. Not a big deal, but I think this should be communicated to players in the case someone is not playing, but simply watching. Just some feedback on my end to the app developers.
Other than that the course played great. I played from the championship tees to challenge myself and on that day the length was about 7,500 yards. I had a great experience and will be back for sure.
Be sure to hydrate during the summer as the humidity got to me about hole 15 where the breeze had somewhat stopped.
I will be back for sure.
Great layout but transition to summer grasses at this time was not good at all. Was very disappointed with course codition for the money
This course has always been in great shape. The staff were awesome and the pace of play. You can't beat the price that GolfNow provided for a great round of golf. I'll do it again.
Tournament Course...so so at best
Guys in the Pro Shop were great, and they were having a nice sale on merchandise. The starter was fantastic. Cart girl was very nice. Staff at the bar was wonderful!
The course itself is pretty bad. I realize it's the middle of July in Houston, but I was expecting a lot more. It was cart path only due to rain a few days before we played. Several tee boxes had new sod being put down. Several of the greens had bad spots on them. Weeds all over the place. Bald spots on the fairways and rough were very common. Fortunately, the green fees were only $75. Based on the course conditions, I still don't think $75 was a good deal.
Cant believe how bad conditions were in just 3 months
I have attended the Shell Houston Open many times and have always dreamed about actually playing here. The Open was in April and I just played July 3, 2017. The Course looks night and day different. There was dead grass everywhere. Tee boxes, fairways, greens. The front 9 holes were worse than the back but conditions were pretty consistent. Often times I had to move my ball to a nearby patch of grass in the middle of the fairway. I emailed the Course Director stating my concern for the course conditions and I have waited for 3 days with no reply. For the money they charge you here it was a waste of a day. I play golf about once a week will likely not play here again until I can see with my own eyes conditions have improved.
Better off playing Herman
I've played this course several times before and have loved it. I recommended it to a friend and we set up a T time for this past Monday. The course was is horrible shape. Felt bad I had bragged about it. I'll make sure to keep an eye on reviews if we decide to go back play. On a different note, we were charged by the club house for two extra boxes of balls. We're hoping they go back to the surveillance film and confirm the inaccurate charges. We shall see..
Les Williams
I have played the Golf Club of Houston for the last time! On Saturday my partner and I decided to give the former Redstone Golf Course another shot. I have played this course three times before usually around this time of year and every time the conditions have been abysmal. It was our hope that surely only 90 days after the Shell Open the course would be in, at least, 85-90% tournament shape. Boy were we wrong!
Every fairway had gigantic dead spots and what looked like severe damage from who- knows- what kind of mismanagement. The greens were slow and pitted. The tee boxes were the worst! Inconsistent tee placement from hole to hole. You could not figure out the distances from tee to green because the score card and the tee positions were totally out of sync. The traps were pathetic! They had some sand in them but the "management" had not raked them to fluff them up in what appeared to be a week or two. Also the huge traps had only one rack and usually way away from any common traffic. To make matters worse the "starter" was a complete jerk. Just before we were to tee off I asked him "...where is the closest restroom?' His response..."well, if you really have to go I guess you can go to the teaching facility!"
What kind of response is that? "If you really have to go"; not sure how to react to that.
Anyway, not a great day. If you come to this place DON'T EXPECT EVEN CLOSE TO TOURNAMENT CONDITIONS AT THIS PLACE. If you want to play a better course try Cypresswood Traditions or Wood Forest Golf Course. At least they will not ask you the severity of your need to use the restroom.
