Ron Jaworski's RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club
About
Ron Jaworski’s Riverwinds Golf & Tennis Club is situated along a scenic stretch of grassland between the banks of the Woodbury Creek and the deep harbor marina on the Delaware River. Its location gives it the feel of traditional seaside links courses found in Scotland and Ireland, which is further enforced by the sod-wall bunkers that lurk near the greens. The layout features plenty of water and incorporates the surrounding wetlands as well. One unique feature of the golf course is that the routing winds across a mile-long twisting burn, creating a visually interesting setting. Riverwinds begins with a gentle, mostly flat front nine but the mounding becomes more aggressive as you move onto the back. All of the holes face a different direction, which means you’ll most likely be using all the clubs in your bag to tackle the crosswinds and rugged terrain.

Windy windy windy
Decent course , overpriced, one cart girl, club house is too far from carts, no clubhouse after turn have to drive a while, always weird rules about where to ride the cart. Always windy
What's up with the rough?
Overall I enjoyed my round. The rough was U.S. Open length on most of the course, members of my foursome often walked right by their ball which slowed the pace of play. The greens have a lot of unrepaired ball marks that makes putting a challenge. The course is challenging and has some fun holes (par 3 17th). The staff were friendly and the food at the on-course shack was good. I would play the course again.
Riverwinds fills your sails
I liked the variety and challenge of the layout very much. I'd give the course 5-stars, but for the greens (see below).
A bonus is the great views of the Delaware River, Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia skyscrapers, jets rising and landing at the Philly airport.
As to conditioning: The greens had lots of ball marks and scuffs, unfortunately. They rolled OK and were at medium-slow speed. Fairways, tees and bunkers were in very good shape. Rough was thick and, I think, too high for a course like this that gets a lot of play. (This may be due to heavy rains preventing mowing.) I was told the course used to have high fescue grasses bordering many fairways; I was glad to see they had been cut down.
White tee yardage is quite long at over 6,500, and the 128 slope is deserved, perhaps understated.
Great deal at my $30 Hot Deal.
Also has nice bar and restaurant with the fantastic views.
Riverwinds
Course was nice and enjoyable! Rough is dangerously thick. Lost time and pleasure from hitting it in the rough to have it end up underneath brown dead spots of previously cut grass. Breeze is nice off of the river. Wish we could see more of the river throughout the course. Greens are super spongy. No driving range.
Worth a Try
Played this course for the first time. For the HotDeals price on golf now it was good value.
This is a pretty challenging links style layout. The course offers a good mix of birdie chances with difficult holes where par is a good score. As mentioned in many of the reviews, the rough off the fairway was very high for public play which added to the difficulty. It definately adds to the slow pace of play (we finished in about 5 hours) because it was not easy to locate balls in the rough, especially on tee shots where you could not see the landing area.
The fairways were in good shape but the greens were a bit chewed up, especially since we played in the afternoon. LOTS of unfixed ballmarks on every green. Unfortunate that people don't have enough respect for the course to take a few seconds to repair their pitchmarks.
Overall it was a fun course and one that I would play again.
Meh
Arrived to the bag drop with the attendant smoking a cigarette no greeting. When I asked if I could load my clubs he said not until the rest of your group arrive. Whatever.
Fairways and greens at little to be desired. Tees were divot cities and te greens looked like Normandy beach with the pitchmarks.
Rough was thick and tall. It has to be with this layout to give the course some bite. However there was enough mown grass clumps to make it impossible to find the ball Of the 4 fairways I missed, 3 were under grass clumps. Bush league even for a public track.
Each cart ha a sign stating to keep a 4 to 4 1/2 hr round an they closely monitor for slow play and reserve the right to make you skip a hole. LIES!!!! Never saw a ranger all day and the group ahead of us were at times a hole and a half behind the group ahead of them.
Lost a future customer.
Good Course, Great Staff, Lousy Greens
What a nice layout. Challenging, but fair test. All they have to do is mow and roll the greens once in a while and it'd be great.
A+ Aside from Pace in front of us
It wasn't until 13 holes into our round did a marshal monitor any pace of play in front of us. There were times we waited about 10 minutes at a tee for the group(s) ahead. Weren't able to complete the full 18 holes because carts had to be back at clubhouse by 8:30 although there was still enough light to complete the final two holes. Other than that, beautiful course well maintained and challenging enough - wish my first experience was better.
cinque105
Had rained the night before so we seniors could not use our carts to get to our golf balls in the fairway which made for long walks between shots. Fairways are wide, greens were in good shape and the view of the Philadelphia skyline is breathtaking. However, the consensus of the group was that the rough was to high and the forced carries over the environmental protected areas was a negative.
Slow play
They need a ranger to keep the pace going. The course is in great shape but the pace was terrible
Great course
Lots of hills
Greens were in great shape
Beautiful course
Rude cart girl
Overall good value
Will definitely return to play
Slow Play
Management putting too many players on course. My round exceeded 5 hours just to the 16th. Had enough and gave up.
A Gem on the Delaware River
The course is in the best condition in the 10 years I have been playing it. When Ron took it over he made it much more player friendly, greatly improved the condition of the fairways, greens, and tees and put much needed drainage in the traps so they are perfect now. I would highly recommend this course to anyone as they added gold tees to make it senior friendly. The starter and rangers were very helpful courteous and had lots of fun kidding with them. Unlike other courses they have great personalities. Last time I played the greens were excellent. With the multiple set of tees you can experience many different difficulty levels of play. The whites are 6600 which for me is perfect challenge. My friend used the senior tees and he raved that is was "senior friendly". The value for the money is great. The grill at 10th tee provides hamburgers and hot dogs that are very good. The scenic views along the Delaware were awesome and island green with all the boats docked in the water made you feel like you were on a Caribbean island playing a tpc type hole. Can't say enough about the course and the employees.
Challenging Layout, Greens Need Matinence
Overall it was a challenging course, the rough... was well ...rough, was a bit confusing at times from the tee box, familiarity would breed better results, the only gripe I really have is the greens were n terrible shape, I just don't understand why players don't fix there pitch marks, The greens had marks/ holes all over them on every green, kinda ruins the round when u know it would be a miracle for a one putt- it woulD have to richocet off a divot to go on and a couple greens had these white things all over from the trees and they were actually like little pebbles could putt on them either, if the greens were in better shape it would be a great overall golfing experience
Loved the challenge
The rough was a little high, some of the greens could of been in better shape. Overall it was good.
Every year it gets better
I've been playing this course regularly for about 6 years. Staff is always friendly. Course has been upgraded. Before u had to take 20 balls bc the rough was super high. They've been cut, fairways r great and the greens were exceptional. Great practice area. The only thing lacking is the driving range
Nice course
River winds is a nice course with a few challenging holes. Pace of play is usually pretty slow. No club house so no real food after a round. No driving range so forget warming up before you play. Staff is friendly at least, other then that eh.
Better than before
I have played this course often in the past but, I have stayed away recently because of how they let the course get away from them. This is the first time that I have been back there since Ron Jaworski has taken over the course and it as in good of shape since I played there the first week that the course opened.
Aeration
I've played this course many times and it has improved greatly over the years. However, when I showed up for my tee time I was made aware that they were aerating the back nine and I would have to play the front twice. Annoying to say the least as the course did NOT disclose this information when I booked online. I then asked about the turn as there would undoubtedly be players teeing off the first as I rounded the ninth. I was assured there wouldn't be an issue. As I drove up to the first hole again there were no less 20 young high schoolers waiting to tee off. We jumped in front of them as we should have only to have a ranger find is on the first fairway questioning our decision to tee off and our pace of play. This could easily have been avoided by adding the aeration icon to the tee time and reflects poorly on management. I can only hope in the future that they show a little more diligence in listing accurate course conditions.
over priced
Course conditions were very poor. Greens were horrible, goose droppings all over, traps were not raked (or the lack of adequate rakes) and pin positions were not clearly defined by flag markers. A few of the greens were aerated and not told to me at the start of my round. For the price per round that they charge it is highly overvalued. Will not return unless it's a free round.
