Ron Jaworski's RiverWinds Golf & Tennis Club
About
Ron Jaworski’s Riverwinds Golf & Tennis Club is situated along a scenic stretch of grassland between the banks of the Woodbury Creek and the deep harbor marina on the Delaware River. Its location gives it the feel of traditional seaside links courses found in Scotland and Ireland, which is further enforced by the sod-wall bunkers that lurk near the greens. The layout features plenty of water and incorporates the surrounding wetlands as well. One unique feature of the golf course is that the routing winds across a mile-long twisting burn, creating a visually interesting setting. Riverwinds begins with a gentle, mostly flat front nine but the mounding becomes more aggressive as you move onto the back. All of the holes face a different direction, which means you’ll most likely be using all the clubs in your bag to tackle the crosswinds and rugged terrain.

Shearon's River Winds
River Winds is a nice track, set in a large housing development where housing never intrudes. Traffic (except for ships on the river and planes into PHL) doesn't really cross your mind either. This is what you might think of as "links style" and wind swept. There are 4 solid par 3s and the island green shortie at 17 will be truly memorable once they commit to cleaning up the muddy green surround... low tide reveals a lot more than I need to see. The par 5s are likewise, well designed though they lack somewhat for drama without any real risk-reward propositions. The par 4s are generally strong and in several instance (5, 6, 9, 11, 16, and 18) truly memorable. A couple things could be done to sharpen this already challenging (73.8/135 from the tips) course: clean up 17 and let it be the beautiful hole it should be, take down more trees along the river's edge to make those riverside view amazing, get a range... maybe where the soccer fields exist, bring the putting green and short game area in to the clubhouse where we all wait to be sent out to the 1st tee. One other thought: the gap between gold tees at 5639 and white tees at 6576 is a bit daunting. I know there are 5 sets of tees but nothing around 6000-6100? Those are all tweaks and suggestions; not serious disappointments. For what you get, this is a great value and a very nice golf experience.
Great golf - even a better deal.
Arrived 45 minutes early and went right out.Golf attendant was very friendly as was the starter.
Played as a single in 3 hours hitting 2 balls.
First time playing the course was was amazed. If you like links style , you'll love this one.
Greens ran fast and true.1 tip for putting- walk completely around the green when reading it.
Didn't try the restaurant but the cart service fine was fine.
Just 2 small blemishes about this course. The Pro Shop/ Club house wasn't even close to the course- completely unattached to it . A few bunkers need a little more sand.
Overall - an outstanding place to play. Can't wait to play again...... might be tomorrow !!!!!!!
great course
the course was in great ccndition & not much wind. had a great time.
great layout ! fun to play!
Booked our tee time for Sept, 26, at 2:51< got right out to the first tee and the ranger immediately approached to let us know he had been instructed to inform us that we had to be off the course by 6:45, due to shorter daylight and a safe return to the club house.
This was a definite buzz kill ! I feel this should have been mentioned in the golf shop instead of at the first tee. However the staff did a great job moving every one around the course and we only missed one hole. for me the airport traffic was an noise issue . A must ride course for me due to a long way from the pro shop to the first tee. golf cart did not run well. A lot of negatives but had a great time playing and enjoying the condition of the course!
Amazing shape
This course was in great shape for almost October. I have always loved this course for its views and course layout. Must play!
Excellent course for the money
Course in excellent condition for this time of year. Love the island green on the 17th.
Enjoyable Golf Experience
From the well maintained tee boxes the course only gets better! Fairways are cut beautiful and the greens roll good. The greens were a bit soft and slow-but need to be with a course receiving a lot of play. Found this layout to my liking and will definitely return. I am a 8-9 hdcp and enjoyed playing from the blue tees. Go play--worth your time and money!
A nice course for your average outing
Not bad for $39 rate. Nice views and wildlife all over the course. The lay-out is a bit odd. Long drive to the first tee and a sign on No 8's fairway pointed our group in the wrong direction. Aside from that, a solid course with good conditioning.
Fun course, well maintained
I have golfed here a few times over the summer and was never disappointed. The course is always pretty well maintained. Pace was slightly slow the most recent time but if you can't factor in an extra 15-30 mins to play, perhaps you shouldn't be golfing that day. The fairways are pretty forgiving, a higher handicap golfer shouldnt lose too many balls. I think the rates for this course are appropriate. I will certainly be coming back.
Slow slow slow
I have played here quite a bit, but the pace of play is terrible. 3 hours for the front 9, unacceptable. The last time I was here it was 3 1/2 hours to play 11 holes before we just walked off. I like the course but it is just painfully slow and I will avoid playing here because of it.
Fantastic
Challenging course.......fairways outstanding... Greens solid, true and fast......tees good...view on back nine of Phila and river extra reward........Ed
Eeehh...so-so
T boxes and fairways good, greens too soft very slow. I had an embedded ball on a green. Twice. Golfers don't seem to fix pitch marks either. A pet peeve of mine. Overall the course is OK and pace was great at 4 hours. That included a high handicap player with us lower handicappers. BUT, we had to rent clubs and they were really poor condition, not matching sets and very aged. The scratch golfer just played 6 iron the whole round. Hence lower marks.
Long and open
A nice outing with some interesting holes. A long track at 6500 yds from the whites makes the course interesting for longer hitters. Tips would be very challenging.
Course conditions good, including greens.
Good value M-Th, especially with coupons or for seniors. A little pricey Fri-Sun.
Don't Believe the Bad Reviews!
I played here on a regular basis and also played on a few of the days that some of these bad reviews express. The course conditions are always great like any course there are challenges, but is always in great condition.
Pace of play has always been between 4hrs 20min - 4hrs 40min which is great for a course that is always has play on it on a consistent basis. I look at some of these reviews and see they don't see a ranger ever which is not the case. People believe you can go out on a weekend and play in under 4 hours which doesn't happen at any golf course that has play on it.
I wonder how many of these people who post bad reviews take the time to come on here and post a good one after they enjoy their round for the course.
Overall, RiverWinds is a great course with great staff and love playing here.
Windy windy windy
Decent course , overpriced, one cart girl, club house is too far from carts, no clubhouse after turn have to drive a while, always weird rules about where to ride the cart. Always windy
What's up with the rough?
Overall I enjoyed my round. The rough was U.S. Open length on most of the course, members of my foursome often walked right by their ball which slowed the pace of play. The greens have a lot of unrepaired ball marks that makes putting a challenge. The course is challenging and has some fun holes (par 3 17th). The staff were friendly and the food at the on-course shack was good. I would play the course again.
Riverwinds fills your sails
I liked the variety and challenge of the layout very much. I'd give the course 5-stars, but for the greens (see below).
A bonus is the great views of the Delaware River, Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia skyscrapers, jets rising and landing at the Philly airport.
As to conditioning: The greens had lots of ball marks and scuffs, unfortunately. They rolled OK and were at medium-slow speed. Fairways, tees and bunkers were in very good shape. Rough was thick and, I think, too high for a course like this that gets a lot of play. (This may be due to heavy rains preventing mowing.) I was told the course used to have high fescue grasses bordering many fairways; I was glad to see they had been cut down.
White tee yardage is quite long at over 6,500, and the 128 slope is deserved, perhaps understated.
Great deal at my $30 Hot Deal.
Also has nice bar and restaurant with the fantastic views.
Riverwinds
Course was nice and enjoyable! Rough is dangerously thick. Lost time and pleasure from hitting it in the rough to have it end up underneath brown dead spots of previously cut grass. Breeze is nice off of the river. Wish we could see more of the river throughout the course. Greens are super spongy. No driving range.
Worth a Try
Played this course for the first time. For the HotDeals price on golf now it was good value.
This is a pretty challenging links style layout. The course offers a good mix of birdie chances with difficult holes where par is a good score. As mentioned in many of the reviews, the rough off the fairway was very high for public play which added to the difficulty. It definately adds to the slow pace of play (we finished in about 5 hours) because it was not easy to locate balls in the rough, especially on tee shots where you could not see the landing area.
The fairways were in good shape but the greens were a bit chewed up, especially since we played in the afternoon. LOTS of unfixed ballmarks on every green. Unfortunate that people don't have enough respect for the course to take a few seconds to repair their pitchmarks.
Overall it was a fun course and one that I would play again.
