Berkshire Valley Golf Course
About
Berkshire Valley has a scenic location in the Highlands region of northern New Jersey. It is known as one of best public golf courses in the area. The course is perched atop the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, providing a dramatic topography for a challenging round of golf. The front of the golf course was carefully carved from a hillside, featuring narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. The first five holes are particularly scenic as well as formidable. There are some open holes that play along the cliffs, subjecting them to the prevailing winds, one of these is the intimidating par-5 third. The Berkshire Valley golf course finishes with its signature hole. This hole can be deceiving since it has a generous fairway, but the second shot is uphill to a tough green.

Golfer Reviews
Solid track, local knowledge helps with the layout and greens
Was pleasantly surprised, heard nice things about this place and was glad I finally got the chance to play it. Super friendly staff helped up get situated and my friends and I enjoyed our round on a Friday afternoon. Course conditions were great and fairways and greens topped the private clubs I played earlier this year. Holes have many variations as in narrow/moderately wide fairways, force carries, water, and elevation changes. Love how some holes were built along the mountain slope creating picturesque views. With autumn turn, the golf course view was beautiful. Was pleased I actually used all 14 clubs. Definitely worth the drive for a NYC local especially if you could play the other high quality tracks in the area.
Great value
Very picturesque course, always in great shape, friendly staff and for a public course rangers keep it moving!
Watch out for no.14
Quite challenging course with a variety of holes. Need to drive it straight especially the first few holes. No.14 is a drivable par 4 where most could hit the downhill green with a fairway metal but many times..it happened to me at least 3-4 times... I would be on the green putting and someone back at the tee would hit his tee shot on the green missing me by a few feet. I wish the starter would warn the players about this 14th hole and maybe put a warning sign at the tee to wait until the green has cleared before they hit their tee shot...
Great Course, great value, need to get rangers out more
Berkshire is a hidden gem, to me two courses in one. First nine a woodlands type course carved into the mountain and the second nine almost a links type course nestled in the valley. The one problem is on this day rangers were not out and one foursome (two ahead of us) turned a under four hour round into almost a five hour round, they had at least two open holes ahead of them. Only thing that turned a great day into just a good one.
Well Rounded Course
Played 4 courses in Veron area. This was our favorite. Challenging with a variety of holes presenting different challenges. Fairways and greens in excellent condition. Friendly staff. Excellent views.
Wow! That's Jersey Strong
Fantastic! Everything about this place screams resort course. Friendly faces in the pro shop and at the starter's hut. On the course at the appointed time and absolutely stunning track.
Small landing areas, lots of tilt, fast-ish greens make this a place a challenge. Well worth a visit.
Consider a round during the fall. Views must be specatular.
June 2017 Review
Course was in great shape and the staff were very friendly. Greens were medium speed and there was no waiting on any of the holes this day. Come out and enjoy one of Morris Counties best courses!
One of the best
Since moving to Jersey at the start of the golf season, this is one of the best courses I've played. An incredibly fun, interesting, challenging layout. Every tee shot, and many 2nd or 3rd shots, present multiple options. Definitely a thinking man's course. The first five holes are incredible, playing high up on a ridge overlooking the other 13 holes. And even the the latter 13 holes play on flatter ground, they are still incredibly unique and interesting. The course was in perfect condition but for the geese pooping all over and literally tearing up the fairway with their beaks (I guess there's food under there?). Still, despite that one complaint, I can't recommends this course enough from a golf perspective.
good deal great layout for public.
Staff friendly, got me out on time. Pace was good, fun layout. Need a challenge try it from the blues. Had a great time. Look forward to taking some friends.
Not like it use to be
I have been playing this course since it opened in 2004/2005 and although the staff is excellent, friendly and helpful there are a few things that need to be addressed immediately. First the conditions of the course has been steadily going downhill, there is very little sand in the traps but plenty of stones and some of the bunkers look as if they are never maintained. The tee boxes markers need to be moved more often and those areas need to be top dressed and seeded. Second and probably most annoying is the pace of play. To have to endure a 5.5 hour round is totally unacceptable and I have 2 suggestions to correct this issue, first hire rangers to keep the slow players moving and second explain to every group going out that if they are high handicappers they must play from the white tees! Every time I play I observe countless golfers playing from the blue or even the "tips" when they absolutely should be playing from the whites. There hasn't been a ranger on this course since last Spring and I fault the course manager for failing to hire them. Again I must make it clear that the clubhouse staff, the starters and the cart attendants are excellent. If these few items were addressed this would be one of the top municipal courses in the tri state area.
Slow and expensive
4:50 for an early morning tee time is way too slow and $72 is not a good value in Apeil
Not What It Once Was
This very fine layout has suffered under the management of the Billy Casper Co. In short, corners are being cut. Tee boxes are in poor shape - particularly on par 3's, fairway divots are rampant, and the greens are mediocre at best. The course reminds me of unkept munis from decades ago. On course drinking water containers were empty the day we played, even the Porto John hand sanitizer was empty. This stuff added up over the course of the round on what is otherwise a fine, fun to play course.
Bad Time
$65 dollars for an off-season round unbelievable! Didn't have all the tees set up either!
Fall day
From the winding drive into the course to the final drive down 18, the visual estestics of this gem may make you forget that missed 3 footer. Amazing opening holes that open playing horizontally on high ridges with awesome vistas of the valley holes below. Course is in great shape as well. Staff is always friendly as well
Don't let the scenery fool you:
As serene as this course appears it will reach out and bite you!
This course is in excellent shape and is very scenic however you have to hit straight and fairly long on a couple of holes.
If hitting over hazards intimidates you?
You will struggle on several holes.
Greens are about average.
I struggle on this course at times but it is still my favorite course to play during the week.
Staff is always pleasant.
Great Course, carry some extra golf balls!
Berkshire IMO is the best Muni course in Morris county and may be one of the better muni courses in NJ.
The holes are well spread out and provides enough challenge for all level of golfers i.e. elevation , water hazard, blind tee shots etc. (would not recommend this course for beginners though).
First 4 holes need accurate tee shot and the 5th hole although may look short and easier, the greens are sure to make you sweat, the fairway opens up after the starting holes.
Greens are fast and true and not overly undulated ( except few). The club staff, starters are extremely friendly and there is decent driving range to warm up before your round.
In line with the other reviews, it is recommended to carry some extra golf balls when playing this course.
