Berkshire Valley Golf Course
About
Berkshire Valley has a scenic location in the Highlands region of northern New Jersey. It is known as one of best public golf courses in the area. The course is perched atop the ridge of Green Pond Mountain, providing a dramatic topography for a challenging round of golf. The front of the golf course was carefully carved from a hillside, featuring narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. The first five holes are particularly scenic as well as formidable. There are some open holes that play along the cliffs, subjecting them to the prevailing winds, one of these is the intimidating par-5 third. The Berkshire Valley golf course finishes with its signature hole. This hole can be deceiving since it has a generous fairway, but the second shot is uphill to a tough green.

One of New Jersey's best public courses
If Ballyowen at Crystal Springs Resort is the best public course in New Jersey, the argument could be made that Berkshire Valley is the second or third best in the state. In fact, if you're planning a trip to Crystal Springs, be sure to make time to come out to Berkshire Valley, which is also one of the best bargains in the state (it's technically a muni, which is hard to believe). With the first five holes built on the side of a mountain and the rest of the course in a lush valley, the views are unrelenting, as is the quality of the holes. Wide fairways (with the exception of the first few holes) are the rule rather than the exception, and no two holes are alike. Which makes Berkshire Valley very memorable.
Beautiful course
Great course terrible pace of play on weekends always 5hrs or worse. Staff is excellent beautiful layout
Scenic Berkshire Valley
Absolutely stunning picturesque property. Nice clubhouse, perfect little driving range to warm up before your round. Staff was welcoming and extremely friendly. The starter was an awesome man who explained the lay of the land and gave some great pointers. Weather was great, the course gets a ton of play between regulars and they do a lot of outings there- (wish people fixed their divots and ball marks). Met 2 greenskeepers during our round who were very friendly and appreciative men who really seem to love their job (and they do a great job on the course). The cart girl was friendly. A nice mixture of tight challenging holes and open fairways, long par 3s that will make you think a little. The course is a panoramic dream, especially with the fall foliage setting in. We crossed paths with a NJ Black Bear who was more scared of us then we were of him- thank goodness LOL. WILL RETURN 1000000%
NIce for a County Course
Well maintained course. Clubhouse and starter were friendly. Very crowded when I was there and I had to wait several minutes between shots. Normally that would prevent me from returning but I shot a good round so I may have to return to try and repeat my success.
Glad we went up!!
I have been told by a few people that this course was worth the ride up to play and it did not disappoint.
Beautiful conditions, great course layout and makes you think about your shot on certain holes. Can not wait to go up and play in the fall when leaves start to change.
Only complaint and has nothing to do with the course is:
One word for all player "fix your ball marks""
Expensive, but it's worth it at least once
One of the nicer courses I've played on: Beautiful scenery, great conditions, challenging holes. Food was good, too, with a barbecue at the 9th hole and a hot dog/hamburger stand at a later hole.
As much as I enjoyed this course, the staff wasn't very friendly or helpful. The cashier insisted that we'd only booked for three, even though a player partner insisted that he'd called and added a fourth after booking here. No matter who was right, she didn't handle it well, nor did she explain it well. When it looked like we were going to have one man getting shut out, we went straight to the starter, who straightened it out.
The marshal was nice enough, but he followed us around for four or five holes, watching us play and reminding us about the pace even though we're actually a pretty quick group that speeds up even more when players are on our back.
Sad to say, I'm probably not going back there anytime soon, but the course is so nice I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a go.
Great course
Best public golf course I've played on so far. I'm definitely coming to this course more often.
Absolutely AMAZING - Play this course ASAP
First off....Mike the Starter sets the tone for a great round of golf. Always friendly and takes the time to learn your name once you start to become a regular. I look forward to saying "hey Mike" every time I pull in to the driveway.
Now, on to the course....this incredible course. Overall, I cannot think of a single thing wrong with this place. The scenery is second to none, with the first 5 holes playing along the side of an elavated cliffside and the remaining holes perfectly laid out across the property. The tee boxes and fairways are always cut with care and the rough is tough but fair. I always think the greens could run a LITTLE quicker but they are true and always placed in challenging locations. Today, I was 78 with three 3-putt bogeys so could have been much better. That said, it was my best round here from the Blues (6,400 yards and change). I have been to BV at least 8 times this summer and simply do not get tired of this place. Every single hole is legit, there are no dummy holes or any holes that seem forced in or out of place. Just a classic course and one that will be even more breathtaking in the Fall when the leaves change.
The price today was $70 which in my opinion is well worth it. I paid this much to play Split Rock / Pelham and just do not get me started on that place....just terrible. Terrible. Anyway, do yourself a favor and play Berkshire Valley. You will be glad you did and say hi to Mike for me. Great guy.
Great course, great conditions
Played for the first time and will add this to my rotation. I believe that this is better that any of the Crystal Springs courses including Ballyoween.
Fantastic Layout
The aesthetics are brilliant. The tiered levels of this layout allow you to experience the unfurling panorama all around you. All while playing eighteen on an impressive course. First time. Hopefully to return quite often.
A great course
Perfect conditions, 4 hour round, great greens, fairways views . Friendly staff, a great experience. One of my favorites One major improvement needed. It needs a real bar and nicer furniture for an after round drink an food.
Very good condition
Course condition was excellent.
Views are amazing.
Excellent design and creativity
One of the best courses I have played in North Jersey
Beautiful, Professionally Managed, Challenging but Fair
This is a beautiful course that makes great use of the natural terrain and water to provide a captivating, challenging and in many ways breathtaking golfing experience. It is narrow, has tons of water, the tee boxes and fairways are in great shape, it has impeccable greens that are hard to read . . . and did I say it was beautiful.
This is the first time that we've played this golf course, but it won't be the last. The only weakness of the course is that many of the sand traps have a very thin layer of sand and then its hard pan. But that's it. The greens are challenging but they are fair. The staff in the pro shop, at the starter’s hut and the grill are really friendly.
We are from Austin, Texas and have played golf courses all over the US. This is one of the best public courses that we have ever played . . . including privately owned public courses. It's hard to believe that this is a "county" course, because it is run better than many country clubs.
Slow play no ranger
Normally
Love this course but yesterday was awful
Teed off at 3:40
Spent the next 18 holes trailing a foursome that barely moved. At the 4th tee when we had been waiting 10-15 minutes per hole I called the pro shop and requested a ranger. We wanted to play through with two open holes ahead of the foursome and since they weren't offering we felt the course should intervene. Well the pro shop told me waiting this long per hole was normal (really?) said they'd send someone out, but no one ever came. At the 14ty hole the same foursome was found pulled over listening to loud radio music buying beers from the cart girl and stopped play after teeing off. When they saw us advancing they continued to finish the hole. This course needs a ranger and also really needs to listen to customers when they call in from the course. I have never had to call about slow play in 20 years of golfing and Berkshire did not respOne. Extremely disappointed in the service ! May rethink playing another round here
Another good experience at BV...
Ive enjoyed playing BV a number of times before and this round was no different. Course was in excellent condition including the greens.
It is a visually stunning setting and most of the holes offer food for the imagination.
Pace of play was a little slower than I hoped for but it was a holiday weekend so I'll give a pass on that note.
Def worth another visit soon.
Excellent course. Fun to play
This is a must play course in northern NJ. Beautiful scenery and layout. Varied holes with elevation changes, water hazards and some narrow fairways. Challenging but fair. Pace was a little slow because foursome ahead of us playing from blacks, 6800+ and they shouldn't have. No ranger out on course was only complaint. Friendly and professional staff.
Great value and a beautiful course
This is a great course with nice facilities and the friendliest most accommodating staff. The pace was a little slow but it was a busy day and with three foursomes in front of us and two foursomes behind us that is to be expected. I was a little disappointed that the grill in the clubhouse was closed on such a busy day but they did have cold food and snacks. The course is challenging with water holes difficultly placed traps and some tough doglegs. It's nicely maintained especially for how highly trafficked it is. All in all I had a great time and will go back.
