Neshanic Valley Golf Course - Meadow/Lake Course
About
The 27-hole Neshanic Valley Golf Course is the flagship course of the Somerset County Park Commission system. The renowned design team of Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry created the course. Divided into three nines known as the Lake, Ridge, and Meadow, the course provides three different 18-hole combinations. Each par-36 nine has five different sets of tees. The Meadow/Lake Course features ample amounts of fescue along both the fairways and greens. If you don't hit straight off the tees, you may find yourself in some trouble. There are cavernous bunkers framing the greens, which are also subtly sloped for even more of a challenge. The golf course begins and ends with water holes but you'll find environmentally sensitive wetland areas that come into play throughout. In addition to the 27-hole course, Neshanic Valley also has a nine-hole, par-32 Academy Course.

1sr time at Neshanic Valley - and not the last
Played Meadow to Lake 9s under ideal conditions. Fairways had been punched about 10 days prior and were still healing, but conditions were overall outstanding. The course demands a combination of shot placement and occasionally the ability to carry. Thankfully playing in the fall when the gorse had been cut back. Playing the spring / summer would take an extra sleeve or 2 of balls!!
It is understandable why this course is rated so highly. The care and maintenance for a public course is at the top of the list. I did not have my best round, but with some knowledge of the course am now looking forward to playing again.
We used carts but this course is very walkable.
great day
best county coarse in new jersey what a pleasure
Meadow to Ridge
There are 3 different 9's here. Country club conditions throughout. The 2 nines I played were a little bland except for Ridge #5. A par 5 with a forced carry off the tee. Then a decision must be made, do you play back over the hazard with an easier 3rd shot or play down the fairway and play your approach over the hazard. A little pricey ($65) for out of county senior. They do post their areation schedule on there web site. (NICE)
Great conditions
Greens very very slow. And many bunkers are light on sand. Improve these two items and course will be excellent.
Great Course
Well worth the trip and the price. One of the nicest county courses you will find.
Good Track
Good course with an interesting layout. They aerated the greens a week earlier so they are still a little bumpy. Fairways and tee boxes are excellent. Terrific staff and good food at the grill.
Great muni course
Played meadow and lake. Good deal golfnow. Tee box fairways great shape. Greens just aerated.
Only complaint we played at 2:30 and last saw cart girl was 3:30 and we were short on water drinks. No water on course. A little surprised as we play Monmouth County courses all time and water at most tees and cold. Wil definitely go back for Fall play.
Neshanic Review
I played at the course without knowing it was aerated the previous week so the greens were not in normal play condition, which was a little disappointing. Otherwise. The course was in good shape, well maintained and challenging.
Great not just good
Beautiful course the layout of all three 9 hole courses is designed well enough for space between holes but your not walking or driving forever to get go the next tee box the course is immaculate for a public course it was a top 50 public course in the United States and I recommend this course for golfers on all levels... The only negative is they were working on the greens but that's expected this time of year for courses that actually keep up on there courses GREAT JOB. Finally i read some reviews about unfriendly staff.....not one person I encountered gave me any bad service I was prepared for the worst but was quite pleasantly surprised. This is my new go to
Great layout, soft conditions
I'll put this caveat out there: I played on the hottest day of the year.
That said, I don't think that really taints my view of the course at all. The layout was fantastic, if you like more modern links style courses, you will love this course. The rolling terrain made for some lovely views. The course provided enough of a challenge, with decisions to be made on many of the tee boxes, and generally well-guarded greens. The second half of the Lake course provides some particularly challenging holes (6-9).
My two qualms about the conditions, in order of severity:
1) The greens were atrocious, and definitely not up to par for a course that's supposedly one of the best public courses in the state. The greens were very soft, very slow, very chewed up (as if no one had repaired a ball mark) and wildly inconsistent speeds. I was severely disappointed in the greens. All of the above conditions made putting extremely frustrating, when it didn't need to be. Not what was expected from a course that hosted a USGA Pub Links championship.
2) The entire course was soft. I'm not sure if this was due to excessive watering because of the heat. But I doubt it was, because I didn't see any evidence of it on the course (i.e. at most courses on hot days, you see the grounds crew out there turning sprinklers on and off or hosing down greens and tees as necessary, which wasn't the case here). It started on the grass driving range, (having one would usually be a plus), where I couldn't get a good footing, and when I thought I had a good footing, my feet would slip and slide during my swing. My stance ended up chewing up the driving range as much as my clubs did. That should not happen absent extreme rain. And on the course, on the tees and fairways, it was more of the same. This led to many errant shots. Once again, I was very disappointed.
I'm not sure if I would recommend this course. I usually like to try every course twice before I completely write it off, but I was very disappointed this time out.
Fantastic golf course!
A friend recommended Neshanic Valley GC as a must play while I was in town with some friends from FL. Greens rolled fantastic and was very impressed with the layout. Put this one on your list as a "must play" when in the area! Food was great and the beers were cold too!
Golfers....please fix your ball marks!
Great course layout, good pace of play and overall, conditions were very good. I only wish players would fix their balls marks more regularly. Wet conditions resulted in many marks that had been left w/o being repaired.
Beautiful Course. Good challenge. I recommend
When you arrive, you pull up to The Clubhouse on top of a hill set among a set of rolling hills for miles giving you the feeling of playing on a farm like layout. Beautiful! The link style course reminded my a bit of Ballyowen due to all the fescue around. No bag pipes though. LOL! We played at a 60% discount at 2:40 PM from Golf Now. Shweet! Others were paying over $85. We only paid $38.
It rained earlier that day so the greens at the end of the day (when it was dry) were a bit chewed up. I don't think that was the course's fault but rather the people playing didn't fix their divots on the green and fairways making the greens in the end pretty ragged. We chalked it up to the rain and combination of late day drying out and poor golfer etiquette. I'd be back to play here again in a heartbeat!
Ok I played it.
You definitely have to be impressed with setup, clubhouse , learning center etc.
I played meadow /ridge. Couldn't beat $30 fee GN
I only saw the cart girl once in 18 holes. There was no water on course , very hot humid day.
It was a fair layout , everything was right front of you. Greens were a little bit of a mess , unfixed ball marks , no consistency btw greens. Although greens were generous in size . Would definetly play again. Next time will get there with enough time to
warm up.
Decent course
Played meadow/lake. Course was in good shape, somewhat challenging links-like course. Greens are undulating yet but on the slow side. Pace of play was very fast..4hour round for a foursome . Bit pricey compared to other courses in the county.
Decent, but
Course is in good condition. Straight forward but greens are undulating and bit on the slow side. Played as a foursome at a 4hr round pace. The groups behind had absolutely no manners, shouting, cursing, and hitting their tee shot while we're getting ready to hit the second shot at a short par 4. They complained to the ranger that we were slow although we were at a 4hr 18 hole pace, and the ranger had the audacity to tell us to pick up the pace. Don't think we'll come back to play here again.
Good but..
Played Meadow-Lake, course was in good condition although the greens were bit slow. Played as a foursome at a 4hour/18hole pace, starter asked us to let another foursome go in front of us before we even teed off the first tee. There was a threesome right behind us that kept shouting and cursing at us although we were at 4hr/18hole pace..we let them pass..after a few more holes..another group (a foursome) was right behind hitting their tee shots while we're getting ready to hit the second shot to a short par 4..then complained to the ranger that wer slow? Not sure whether it was just that say but the golfers there had absolutely no manners..don't think we'll ever going back there again.
Great course, but matshal never communicates
As it has been, great course, variety of different holes. Always fun until what happened.
Watch out for a marshal. we by mistake take a wrong cart path half way to wrong hole, and came back immediately. Marshal assumes we hopped to different nine and yelled us to go back. I apologized for my mistake (of taking wrong cart path) and explained situation, showing our score card, but he never listened and saying "I DONT CARE!!, I DONT CARE!!". Rest of round could have been much more pleasant. As long as you stay on right direction to next hole, and not facing this marshal, it will be a great day.
This course is challenging and nicely maintained.
Great course, great condition, the greens were beautiful.
Great course
Challenging links, but well worth it.
