Valley at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort

About
Desert Springs Resort boasts two championship courses designed by Ted Robinson, the Palms and the Valley. The golf courses are known for their beautiful setting, offering unrivaled views of the Santa Rosa Mountains and the Coachella Valley. The Valley Course is considered the less challenging of the two, but both offer a stunning landscape covered with swaying palms and blue lagoons. The course features player-friendly fairways that beginners will enjoy, but there are also a fair amount of challenges. Like on the Palms Course, there is plenty of water. Between the two golf courses, more than 35 acres of water features come into play in the form of man-made lakes and streams. In addition to the two courses, Desert Springs also offers an 18-hole putting course, which offers all the same challenges as the other courses including bunkers, water hazards, and undulating fairways.

Amazed at how good shape this course was in
I had first played the two courses at Marriot Desert springs some 12 years ago. Being one of the premier resort hotels and being linked to the Marriot Timeshares the course gets a ton of play when I played the two courses 12 years ago the two courses reflected it. Spotty fairways, slow greens, slow play and many 4 time a year players that don’t repair ball marks. Well the resort is just as busy it is a beautiful resort with so much to do. The real surprise was just how good the course I played (valley) was.
The greens were perfect to roll the ball on; the fairways were lush without a bare spot I could see. The rough was fair and with very strong delineation of fairway and 1st cut.
It was fun to play, the staff to a man were friendly and helpful with a smile all along.
The course has wide fairways but there is plenty of water to be careful in your shot selection.
If there was one note I could give them is that sand in the bunkers is so fine when it is wet in the morning it was like hitting from hard pan. Other than that, great place to play, superb conditions and friendly helpful staff. I am glad I chose to revisit it again.
Good value, quirky holes, decent conditions, recommend
Good value, quirky holes, decent conditions, recommend. Valley course is coming out of maintenance and mowers were still out there making piles of grass clippings everywhere. Fairways and greens were good. Bunkers ok. The layout is kind of cramped in. Mostly uneven, undulating lies everywhere made it difficult to make consistent contact (back to practicing those above/below/side hill lies). I prefer the Palm course for more scenery but recommend both.
Friendly, attentive and fun
From the moment I arrived, the golf staff was helpful, friendly and very attentive. Love the staff.
The course was in very good condition from the tee boxes to the fairways to the greens. Very well kept.
Definitely would play this course again.
Bugs
Overall everything was great, aerified greens were coming together nicely. Major issue were the bugs, gnats and others everywhere. Other than that it was a fun round. 6:54 tee time took exactly 4 hours. Can’t complain at all.
Back 4 more’
This course is in beautiful shape for July, a great lay out ! A+
Great for $40.
Played as single. group in front had no clue to let a single play through. C'mon people....
Used to be much better
Fairways were good, greens were terrible, bunkers not good, rough had not been cut in a very long time. Part of the issue is that nobody fixes ball marks or rakes the bunkers. I used to always try and get out to this course because I like the layout and the conditions used to be good. I will be avoiding it in the future as there is much better value elsewhere.
Summer pricing
You almost can't go wrong with summer pricing in the desert - as long as you stay alive in 112° weather. Greens still a touch slow from aerating.
Review
Course was in good shape for recent aerification. Staff should allow coolers which contain Gator Aid or water due to very hot weather. Finally the cart attendant gave us ice.
Desert golf
It was great just hot right now but love the course and hotel.
They don’t care if you are there!!!
I know it’s summer. But the staff could care less if you are there. We were not hotel guests and were treated like we didn’t belong.
So sad. As this used to be the course to play out in the area. Gone down hill.
Always a challenge
I enjoy this course as it is a good test of skill and has beautiful views
A classic course
The course was in great shape- I've played it before but not this time of year. It was not at all busy and the pace was quick.
Play again.
Have played many Marriott based courses. Has some dry patches. Greens true. T boxes / traps need some work. Overall great day and would highly recommend.
Bad Greens
This course is part of the famous JW Marriott and you would expect a better condition course for the money. The greens were terribly inconsistent and bumpy. We only saw the beverage cart one time in our 4 hours and the snack shack was closed at the turn.
