Unfriendly staff
The course was in good shape. Only a couple of greens had some minor issues. One green is getting in poor shape. Pro shop must be under renovation. Checked in in foyer of restaurant. My wife was looking for restroom in restaurant and was nastily told you had to go to another building to the restroom.
Starter not in sight when I pulled up to start round so I drove up and was then yelled at from behind. I guess they cater to members and if you are new to course they are not very welcoming.
Nice Course
This is my home course ( meaning it is the closest course to my house). I have always enjoyed playing SummerGlenn. The course has always been in decent to great condition. There are lots of courses in the Ocala area right now that are in poor condition but this is NOT one of them. The greens are good to good PLUS. The layout is very manageable and still challenging. Nice staff (especially John...good man). 10 and 11 will bite you if you don't know how to manage your ball placement si it is a tough start when you start your round on the back nine. Pace of play has never been an issue. I recommend this course very whole heartedly.
Fun little course
Not bad for the price also the layout is good with wide open fairways and small but decent greens. The staff was friendly and the water in the coolers nice and cold. They gave me a voucher for a 20$ replay good for a few weeks I'll probably go back
Golf now had no mention of the plugged greens. It's unplayable until the greens come back. The whole clubhouse is under construction. There should have been a warning prior to showing up at the course.
SummerGlen Country Club
10:44 tee time w/ wife for $19/ea thru Group Golfer. Teamed up w/ nice couple staying at The Villages, Greg & Marie. Beautiful course in subdivision setting & in immaculate condition. Pro shop under construction, so being run from desk in front of restaurant. Fun layout except for 10th & 11th holes, which seemed different from rest of course. Tee boxes, fairways, & greens plush. Elevated greens rolling fast & true. Gas powered carts w/ windshield & rain cover in back. Was woth the hour & 1/2 drive, especially for the price offered by Group Golfer. Would love to playh this course again.

pretty open,not to much trouble
Greens rolled good, just a couple greens bumpy ,fairways good condition
Great Course
We enjoyed our game. will play there again if we are in the area. Would highly recommend this course.
Come back if you were upset last visit!!
We've played here just over 15 months and are VERY pleased with several factors:
1) improved course condition
2) plans to upgrade the club house & amenities
3) staff -- as always -- outstanding
4) great promos
5) new "Gimme Card" option with better rates.
A Very Pleasurable Experience!
Would recommend the course to everyone especially seniors. Played the gold tees. Some short, easy holes and some long, hard holes, a good mix. Have played this course many times and enjoy the staff, friendly and helpful. When the round is done, the restaurant offers a great menu with very reasonable prices with a great wait staff. I highly recommend this course.
Well managed
This course is very well maintained. A couple of greens were undergoing improvement, but 90% of the greens were excellent, as were the tee boxes, fairways, and traps. The restaurant was also a positive experience.
Course condition
The course was in terrible condition...crabgrass every where...fairway and greens
Greens are awful!
Our traveling group played here yesterday and the condition of the greens was terrible; bumpy, sparse, and very uneven. When we got to the 4th hole, a worker was using a shovel to throw sand on the green while we played, talk about awful, they should at least use a spreader instead of a shovel. This green needs to be blown up and completely redone along with a couple of others, They could at least mark bad areas as " ground under repair". Some fairways were marked in areas, but overall the fairways were OK. I guess they know it is bad, a lady met us, a lady met us on #17 giving out discount coupons, I won't be using it. The only good thing is the employees here are always very nice & the restaurant is also very reasonable with good food and specials. I won't retun until conditions improve/
A good course ruined
I have been playing at Summer Glen since it opened, but have not played it in a couple of years. I was shocked to find the course in such poor conditions. Playing with some of the members I was disappointed to find out that Hamton Golf who are managing the course have let it deteriorate to such a sad state. I will not play this course again until I can be sure that it has recovered. While the members have their theories of why the course is being neglected I can only attest to how poor of a shape that I found it. Thankfully the staff is still super nice which made my disappointment bearable.
There's a reason it costs $25
We were very disappointed in the condition of this course and would never come back to play it again. The fairways were brown and had bare spots, and the greens were bumpy and unpredictable. Any putts that went in were completely based on luck because you couldn't hold a putt line at all. There was no overseeding except at the greens. On the positive side, the holes were interesting and if someone invested some money it could be a nice course.
First, thank you for your feedback. We understand that the golf course is not in the greatest shape at this time. We experienced a multitude of weather-related problems that are difficult to overcome when grasses are not in optimal growing conditions during the winter. We are actively monitoring and treating our greens and are starting to see ideal patterns that will help expedite them to our standards. The reduction in rate reflects that we are truly committed to offering our customers pricing that is commensurate to course conditions. We hope you'll come back and try the course again.
Worth looking behind the berm!
Website: www.summerglengc.com
I played the SummerGlen Golf Club outside of Ocala, Florida, on 12/2/15 while driving from Clearwater to Myrtle Beach. The par 72 course is located in a gated retirement community about 2.5 miles directly off I-75 at Exit 341 for Dunellon. The course was easy to find.
You can’t see the course from the Interstate because there is a high berm all around the community. On some holes this berm works to the player’s advantage because it kicked shots back toward the fairway. I had driven past the community on numerous occasions and knew a course was there but never had time to stop and play.
I played the Blue tees which is one of six sets of tees available. The Blue tees play to 6,261 yards with a rating of 69.5 and slope of 125. The various tees play from 6,673 yards for the Gold tees to the Purple tees of 4,081 yards with a rating of 63.7 and slope of 100.
The design is the centerpiece of a retirement community, and as such, is very playable for players of all abilities if they play the right set of tee boxes. The tees and greens were all elevated and it looked as if there were ponds or marsh areas that had dried up on almost every hole. When I asked if these areas had all been water at one point, I was told no.
I don’t know if walking was an option, but the course looked very walkable.
I had my Sky Caddie which of course helped when playing an unfamiliar course. You do need to call ahead for a tee time as the guard at the gate had my name on a tee sheet and checked before issuing a pass to enter.
Most of the holes were different from each other and presented some unique challenges because some of the greens were very small and/or well-guarded. I took pictures of a few holes. Because the many of the holes had wide landing areas, I felt comfortable trying to cut loose with big swings off some of the tees. The 11th hole, in particular, is a teaser because it was 297 yards from the blue tee (confirmed by the Sky Caddie), goes over water to the left, and features a green blocked by tall trees left and right. I couldn’t resist the challenge and took the ball on a straight line over the tall trees, and was able to clear everything and leave an approach from about 20 yards to the pin.
Some of the other holes had wide enough landing areas to invite ‘letting the big dog eat’.
The course has par five finishing holes on the 9th and 18th holes with a dogleg left on #9 skirting the driving range, and a slight dogleg right on #18 with a forced carry on the second shot if you hit the first shot far enough.
Service
I called the course a day ahead and was encouraged to come up and play. Everybody was very friendly and encouraged coming back. The starter/cart attendant at the end of both nines asked me how I liked the course, and other players I ran into were all very friendly.
There was drinking water on four holes. I did notice two bathroom facilities on the 5th and 15th holes. There are a lot of houses around the course, and personal golf carts were everywhere.
Overall Condition
The course was in good condition throughout all eighteen holes. All of the fairways and roughs were in good shape, and the conditioning is geared toward the retired residents. The greens were a little slower than I am used to, and were small and firm and held shots well. All greens seemed to putt true. Sand traps were not numerous, but were in acceptable condition.
Clubhouse/Amenities
This course has a restaurant in the clubhouse and it seemed well used and busy. There were plenty of personal golf carts parked outside of it without golf clubs on them when I made the turn. There was also a generous driving range and practice green, but I didn’t get to utilize any of those facilities due to time constraints.
Value
I played the course at 10:44 AM at a rate of $36 plus tax. I did ask if they had a senior rate and the girl laughed because she said almost everybody there was a senior.
In summation, I was glad that I finally got a chance to see what was behind the gate and the berm. I was very pleased with everything about the selection of this course.
Thank you so much for leaving us a review. We genuinely appreciate your feedback. Your elaborate review is extremely helpful and we appreciate your time. Looking forward to your next visit to SummerGlen!
Never Again
Two years ago I said I would never play here again after a very poor staff was rude. Decided I would try again but it hasn't changed. Cart person had me make three trips back and forth from the bag drop to the range. By the time I found the person I was going to play with, I had zero time to warm up or putt. Once we teed off, it took up to 10 minutes per shot. Made the turn in almost 2 3/4 hours. 14 people were either playing or waiting to tee off. After a 30 minute wait I called time out.
Weather Has Taken Its Toll
The facilities, people, food, atmosphere and price were all exceptional. The course, not so much.
I don't know the history of the area but there apparently had been a lot of water around the course, but it either dried up or most of the ponds, lakes and creeks were drained. Huge ground depressions were full of recently mowed dry rough. This made for some strange lies and interesting approach shots.
Because of poor growing conditions during an important period of the growing season, the turf health became stressed and weak. Hampton Golf and the SummerGlen Team have long identified the needs of the turf grasses and are working diligently to create the best playing surfaces the club has known for this summer and next season.
