The Golf Club at Dove Mountain - Tortolita/Wild Burro

About
The desert foothills of the Tortolita Mountain Range provide the stunning backdrop for the three nines designed by Jack Nicklaus at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain. They are played in three different 18-hole combinations, one of them being Tortolita/Wild Burro. The Tortolita nine serves as the back nine for the PGA Tour's Accenture Match Play Championship, but Nicklaus considers Wild Burro to be the best of the three. Playing through canyons and desert washes, the golf course features dramatic elevation changes and stunning views. Tortolita's third hole has the highest elevation at the club while the ninth hole on Wild Burro is the longest finishing hole of any of the nines. The intricately contoured greens and strategic fairway bunkering provide a challenge for even experienced golfers.

Great Shape
The course is in great condition as you would expect this time of year. Very well maintained & a great pace of play.
Disappointing… not what it used to be
Have played here every spring break for over a decade. Used to be first class in every way: layout, course condition, service, overall experience. Not any more. Still a great layout but course condition is very average with mediocre greens. Service is non-existent compared to the past. No bag drop, no starter, saw bev cart once all day, GPS had pin locations all wrong. When we stopped at the turn and mentioned it, we were told “Yeah the pins are never accurate on that thing.” Really? Somehow, though, they’re still charging $250. Luckily we paid half that on a hot deal but still felt overpriced. I get the staffing challenges of Covid but there’s better options for the money: Ventana, Sewailo, even Star Pass. Too bad because it used to be a special experience to play here.but we probably won’t be back next year.
Extremely overpriced and under conditioned.
This is one of the most imbalanced courses I've played. Imbalanced in the sense that the design, the facilities and the reputation are very nice but the actual course and experience is a real let down.
Conditions: Greens were spotty, bumpy and did not run smooth or true. The rough around the greens was mixed with lots of clumps and dead spots. There is no rough for the most part on the course and the bunkers that get play are not in good shape. Lots of overgrown trees and shrubs are blocking your line and the tee boxes and their placement are at odd distances - forcing club choices that do not fit the design.
Its a tough design. Jack really must have been moody during this period as the course is extremely punitive for missed shots .Which is fine when a course is conditioned to play as such, but DM was anything but. The lack of quality care really hits the design on this course. It plays 10 stokes harder when you ball rolls through every fairway or ends up in a bunker far off the line due to conditions.
There was no beverage cart on the course and the snack shack has almost nothing to eat (a few bags of chips and snickers bars were the only choices). The guy in the Pro shop was a stand off jerk but the starters were great.
Overall its a resort course that is poorly managed. The conditions are 4/10 and what you'd expect from a $100 peak rate course, not a $250 course. Courses in AZ are usually in their best conditions in late March, if this is the best that Escalante can do, they are truly awful managers.
We stayed at the Ritz which is a very nice hotel but will never spend $250 to play DM again unless they figure out how to manage a golf course. Its a mark on the Ritz for sure as guests expect a higher level of service and what this course offers is more akin to a 3star family resort in FL than a high end 5star experience in AZ.
Service not up to par
The course layout and conditions are top notch. However if you are going to charge over $200 for a round of golf you should have great service. The turn food shack was closed, saw a beverage cart once, GPS was off by 20 yds on the front nine in both carts. The GPS issue ruining the day. Can’t belive no one at the club did not know of the problem. No one around to assign a cart. All in all it seemed like service was for the members and not the public. Starr Pass which is also a Marriot courses but a step down had much better service.
Still a great course, but the service is lacking
Dove Mt is unquestionably still one of Tucson's best courses. Great condition, excellent greens. But don't pay $200, try to snag one of their specials. And bring your own food and drinks! There wasn't anyone in the restaurant to grab drinks or food and the cart service was once and done. The GPS system also had the wrong pin position (it took me most of the front nine to figure out what was wrong with the yardages).
They seem to be short-handed. Many places are in 2022, but most don't try to charge a premium rate. But understaffing wouldn't cause the yardage snafu.
Aahh Dove Mountain
Excellent course! I love desert golf and this course is one of the reasons why. Course was in really good condition and practice facilities are top notch. Played the Saguaro and Tortolita nines. Saguaro was more difficult, simply because this was my first time. The golf carts have GPS but it was difficult to know how wide the landing areas were. All in all, I hope to play this course many times in the future.
Only at discount prices
I’ve played here before and it’s a beautiful course. The Seguaro nine had some disease on the greens but they putted ok. The Tortolita nine was perfect. I arrived early and ended up playing alone. This is a spectacularly beautiful course and very difficult. The staff is great. I would give it 5 stars but I think it’s a little pricey even by upscale Tucson standards. I’ll definitely go back but only at “Hot Deal” rates.
Best Course in Tucson
This is absolutely one of the best courses in Tucson. Beautifully cared for, stunning views and challenging golf. It has an excellent practice facility so come early. The course is not overly long, but don’t be fooled, there are lots of great visual challenges and accuracy is often more important than distance.
Great Layout, greens disappointing
This was my 2nd time playing Dove Mountain and I love the course. The layout is fair but challenging and the views are outstanding. The staff always does a real nice job and the pro shop has some nice stuff. The greens were quite disappointing this year. They were pretty slow and had a lot of Poa Annua.
Dove Mountain
Nice layout! Condition was good. $220usd was not worth it tho considering other courses in the area were in better shape for a lot less. Play Starr pass. You’ll see what I mean for value!
Tortolita Worth It But They Need Help
Playing Tortolita nine makes it all worth it but: no ranger (slow play), no bev cart, greens on Saguaro a little rough, had to wait for range balls. The staff that was there were nice and very helpful but seemed understaffed.
Disappointed all the way around.
I called the golf course before leaving home to see if there was a frost delay. There was no answer at either number listed on line.
Arrived at 7:45 AM for an 8:10 AM tee time was told there was a 90 minute delay. We asked where we could get a breakfast while we waited and were directed to the Ritz Carlton. Two omelets and coffee at the buffet cost $85.
We played the front nine at a good pace. When we made the turn there was a group waiting to tee off with groups ahead of them. It took almost 3 hours to play the back 9. The course was in good condition although not as good as I remembered from several years ago. There are other courses nearby in the same condition for less than half the price. (See Starr Pass). When I got home I saw that I received an email at 7:24 AM informing me of the frost delay. Over a half hour after I had left for the course. Almost a $600 day. Not nearly worth it. Will not return.
Beautiful Course
Definitely worth the money. Absolutely gorgeous golf course that provided spectacular views, beautiful fairways, poa annua greens and plenty of sand traps to work around. Very enjoyable day of golf that was challenging yet FUN. Would love to play this course again. You will not be disappointed.
Good track for advanced golfers playing for the first time. No tricked up holes and decent sight lines from tees make it a friendly layout….. the greens will punish you and make scoring difficult.
Save the money
Not the best. Greens were terrible. Layout was gimmicky.
Dove Mountain
Beautiful course, lots of sand traps, very challenging greens.
