Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

SAFARI GOLF ASSOCIATION
ON AUGUST 30TH 2017 I PLAYED GOLF AT GILLETTE RIDGE WITH THE SAFARI GOLF ASSOCIATION
WHAT A GOLF COURSE, MANY CHALLENGING HOLES
THE COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE AND THE STAFF WAS WAITING FOR US IN THE PARKING LOT
THE GREENS ARE LARGE AND FAST AND THE FAIRWAYS WERE IN GREAT SHAPE
Road Trip
Safari trip to this wonderful golf course....If you want a golf challenge to a course in great shape with a friendly staff then you need to go to Gillette Ridge...Cant wait to play it again
Interesting Course
Played the course with the Safari Club and had an enjoyable round with friends. Course was in excellent condition and provided several challenges with some narrow fairways, water and well placed bunkers. Need to play the course a couple of times to get comfortable and better know the placement of certain shots. All in all a pleasurable experience with friendly staff.
Nice to see it back
Played with Safari golf club and found the course to be in very nice condition. New owners have done a great job bringing Course back to its old glory days. Played from white tees and found Course to be challenging but not as difficult as I thought. If you play the tips it will be challenging for sure.
Looking forward to playing again soon.
Beautifull Course
Played Gillette Ridge with the Safari Club on Wednesday this week and the course was in excellent condition and very challenging especially playing it for the first time. Looking forward to playing it again.
safari group
I had played this course before, in its early years and the hard greens made it impossible, well now, the greens have either matured or have been re built and hold your approach shots into.
My only complaint would be lack of bathroom facilities, IE - one john - unless i missed a hidden one somewhere
anyways - great track - bring your a game
and greens putted beautiful
A True Safari Club Adventure
Gillette Ridge will challenge, amaze and excite all levels of play, especially as you maneuver through a variety of terrain; tree-lined fairways, spectacular carries, as well as several natural obstacles that have been perfectly considered in the layout of this golf course..
However, it's not a course for the faint of heart. But it is a course that will help you appreciate golf with a whole new level of understanding and appreciation for those who can conquer this crazy game we've all come to love.
Our Safari Club Adventure to Gillette Ridge was nothing short of spectacular. The course itself is incredible in every sense of the word. But everything about the place will invigorate your love of the game.
Safari Club Outing
This is the first time the Safari Club played here. The staff took our clubs to our assigned cart. Its a very difficult course for me, a 35 handicapper. I would like to play it again. The course was in excellent shape from the T- Box to the greens which are very fast. Lost 7 balls but still had a good time.
A Safari Club Favorite
Head Pro Lucas Hitchcock and his assistant Anthony Salvador are doing a terrific job of making everyone's golfing experience is top notch. The course and layout are second to none. Courses conditions are excellent! Go Play!
Good Day
Our tee off was at 8 am. Got a great deal through golf now. You have to tee off on 10 now and finish on 9 instead of the picturesque 18. I'd like to play 18 as 18 not 9. With your receipt you do get 1 free drink that's pretty sweet. The course was in great shape and the greens were rolling true and fast.
Great Course!!
I have not played this course in a couple of years until yesterday. The course is in Phenom. Condition! The Fairways are like hitting off of carpets the undulating greens roll true. The primary and secondary cuts of rough are cut to specification. This course has it all: well positioned bunkers and water hazards force you to be strategic with your shots and the landscape is kept up beautifully. If you want the feel of playing on a PGA course, this is it!
Very accommodating
I was coming in from a lot of traffic out of town w a golf now hot deal and was set to miss my time. With zero issues or questions they were able to switch my time. Really appreciated their level of customer service.
Enjoyable Round
Played this course a couple year's ago. It was in very poor condition. A friend told me that the new owners had put it back into great shape. I gave it a try and wholeheartedly agree. It was in beautiful condition. Friendly staff from Pro shop experience to Starters and on course personnel.
Great price for a excellent golf course.
Great Job
The new management team has done a outstanding job with this course. I truly enjoyed playing the course, which is something I couldn't say 3 years ago.
Challenging
The course was in great condition a couple holes were pretty challenging would love to go there again
Challanging and in great shape
Gillette Ridge is getting better and better since new management took over in 2016. I began playing this course five years ago and the current conditions are the best I’ve seen.
With normal spring rains this year, courses in CT are coming back after 2 years of drought conditions and Gillette Ridge has definitely benefited from the extra water. The fairways were lush and the greens smooth and true. The grass around many of the tee boxes and secondary cut near the greens were so soft I felt like taking my shoes off just to feel how smooth they were. Many thanks to the course superintendent and the worker-bees.
Rates are reasonable and greens fees include a cart. Although the course is walkable, on many holes there are some very long distances from the green to the next tee box so taking that cart may be a sensible choice.
I find Gillette Ridge a challenging course where course management and course knowledge is critical especially those holes with water or carries over waste areas. Knowing when to or where to lay-up can help avoid high scores. The par 4 sixteenth is especially difficult for the average golfer due to a waste area across the fairway about 130 yards from an elevated green that is protected by 2 bunkers in front of the green. Even with a great drive, your second shot must be a just as good to clear the waste area and land on the green. I’ve resigned myself to a layup here and consider a bogie equal to a par on this demanding hole.
Severe brush cutting in many waste areas has taken the fear factor out of these holes. The short, par four 5th hole is an example. The gully in front of the green has been clear-cut so losing a ball here may actually be found unless it lands in the brook, that is.
To sum things up; I found the rates very reasonable. It's a challenging course and in great condition, but it requires some course know-how and shot selection to make you round less frustrating.
THANK YOU! We genuinely appreciate all the detailed feedback. It is rewarding to see people notice improvements as we are always trying to improve ourselves.
