Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The sixth, 173, 3-par: The long slender green, obliquely set to the tee, is a common feature at Gillette. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

The ninth green: par 4, 405, but the blues were set at 440 today. A murderously tough golf hole. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Eleven: par 5, 500. Another strong driving hole, with the Heublein Tower as part of the backdrop. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/28/2021

Gillette Ridge's drivable par-4 13th is an excellent hole. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Beautiful Course
Well maintained, somewhat challenging, but not well managed by starter with pace of play - 4 groups all waiting on each other.
Hidden Gem
I was surprised by the great condition of the course. The greens and fairways were perfectly manacured. The challenging layout has a variety of hazards, waste areas, complemented by a number picturesque small ponds. It was a great day, finished off with a drink and lunch on their covered patio.
great track
We drove up from Stamford and it was a treat. We played early and we played 18 in 3 hours. It was fun and course was in beautiful shape.
Challenging course
I played this course with the Safari Club 2 weeks ago. Very nice conditions, but quite the challenge. Fast greens, many holes had trouble left, right, and center. They say it is the 3rd hardest course in Connecticut. Believe it!!Bring your game with you.
Course is in Great Shape
Fun and scenic course. Price is great for the quality. If prices stay around where they are, I'll be playing a lot more. Played this course last year after it had opened up after the closure and the conditions weren't great. Decided to try it this year and I was happy to see the course is back to normal. Greens are fast and in great shape. Fairways and rough are in great shape. Course plays shorter than the scorecard yardage since the course only consists of flat or downhill holes. The staff always seems to make holes easier by moving tee boxes up, I haven't seen tee boxes moved back to makes holes harder. I think the course is scared of scaring off average golfers by making the course any more difficult than it is. Length isn't the problem, its the hazards that make this course difficult. Great for someone who want to play it often because the course plays very different from different tee boxes. I've played Black, Blue, and White and it' like 3 different courses from each.
A real but fair challenge.
Along with over 100 other Safari Club members, we played Gillette Ridge on a perfect day. The layout was a real challenge with very large greens, layups off the tee required on several holes, target golf on some holes and carries over water to the greens. But it was not only beautiful. The course conditions were perfect. The challenge made it fun and the staff were perfect to deal with. Will be going back in the fall during foliage season when the beauty will only be better.
Very Challenging Course in Excellent Condition
Played here on 8/28 with the Safari Club. What a track! VERY interesting and challenging holes! The course layout is very different from most of the courses we play, with it's marshy areas. The course is spread over a large geographic area, and there are only a handful of holes where you can readily see adjacent holes. I'd love to play this in the foliage season, as it must be beautiful. This course reminds me a lot of the courses that I play in Myrtle Beach. It was in excellent condition throughout. Staff was very well organized and friendly. Looking forward to playing again next year.
Good Challenge
Nice to see this course continue to improve. Layout can be quite challenging to high handicappers. White and blues had too much separation when we played. Whites were way up and it was disappointing on some holes. Usually play the blues, but had some shorter hitters in our group. Course could use more ball washers and drinking water ( or beer cart stops). Barber poles w/ yardage or GPS on carts would be an improvement too. Overall it's a good value and test of anyone's game.
Best test of golf yet
I played gillette with 136 of my Safari Golf Club friends on one of our weekly outings.
The staff were fantastic brought our bags to our carts cleaned the clubs after the round .The food and service was great overall you couldn't ask for better service.
The golf course was in perfect condition and the greens were a true test of ball placement and soft putting test.
this for sure is a coures you have to play the tees that fit your game or it will eat you up in a heartbeat, a great track and fun if you choose the tee that fits your game.
SAFARI GOLF ASSOCIATION
ON AUGUST 30TH 2017 I PLAYED GOLF AT GILLETTE RIDGE WITH THE SAFARI GOLF ASSOCIATION
WHAT A GOLF COURSE, MANY CHALLENGING HOLES
THE COURSE WAS IN GREAT SHAPE AND THE STAFF WAS WAITING FOR US IN THE PARKING LOT
THE GREENS ARE LARGE AND FAST AND THE FAIRWAYS WERE IN GREAT SHAPE
Road Trip
Safari trip to this wonderful golf course....If you want a golf challenge to a course in great shape with a friendly staff then you need to go to Gillette Ridge...Cant wait to play it again
Interesting Course
Played the course with the Safari Club and had an enjoyable round with friends. Course was in excellent condition and provided several challenges with some narrow fairways, water and well placed bunkers. Need to play the course a couple of times to get comfortable and better know the placement of certain shots. All in all a pleasurable experience with friendly staff.
Nice to see it back
Played with Safari golf club and found the course to be in very nice condition. New owners have done a great job bringing Course back to its old glory days. Played from white tees and found Course to be challenging but not as difficult as I thought. If you play the tips it will be challenging for sure.
Looking forward to playing again soon.
Beautifull Course
Played Gillette Ridge with the Safari Club on Wednesday this week and the course was in excellent condition and very challenging especially playing it for the first time. Looking forward to playing it again.
safari group
I had played this course before, in its early years and the hard greens made it impossible, well now, the greens have either matured or have been re built and hold your approach shots into.
My only complaint would be lack of bathroom facilities, IE - one john - unless i missed a hidden one somewhere
anyways - great track - bring your a game
and greens putted beautiful
A True Safari Club Adventure
Gillette Ridge will challenge, amaze and excite all levels of play, especially as you maneuver through a variety of terrain; tree-lined fairways, spectacular carries, as well as several natural obstacles that have been perfectly considered in the layout of this golf course..
However, it's not a course for the faint of heart. But it is a course that will help you appreciate golf with a whole new level of understanding and appreciation for those who can conquer this crazy game we've all come to love.
Our Safari Club Adventure to Gillette Ridge was nothing short of spectacular. The course itself is incredible in every sense of the word. But everything about the place will invigorate your love of the game.
Safari Club Outing
This is the first time the Safari Club played here. The staff took our clubs to our assigned cart. Its a very difficult course for me, a 35 handicapper. I would like to play it again. The course was in excellent shape from the T- Box to the greens which are very fast. Lost 7 balls but still had a good time.
A Safari Club Favorite
Head Pro Lucas Hitchcock and his assistant Anthony Salvador are doing a terrific job of making everyone's golfing experience is top notch. The course and layout are second to none. Courses conditions are excellent! Go Play!
