Gillette Ridge
About
Gillette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, just outside of Hartford, is an Arnold Palmer Signature course. It is one of the toughest rounds in all of New England. The course sprawls across a beautiful landscape covered with natural wetlands and forests of towering maples, oaks, and elm trees. There are strategically placed bunkers in addition to the natural challenges but they are not excessive. The wetlands come into play on almost half of the holes at Gillette Ridge Golf Club. The approaches to the greens are seemingly intimidating but as long as you don't hit short there is always bailout area on one side. Since each hole presents a unique challenge, there is not just one signature hole, but one of the most memorable holes is the par-5 second, a true risk-reward test that requires both length and accuracy.

The 16th green at Gillette Ridge shows the course is consciously shrinking the putting surfaces, presumably for ease of maintenance. I wish they wouldn't do this - it makes an already hard course even tougher and will slow pace of play. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/08/2017

Good layout bad condition
None of the tee boxes except 10 was groomed and all the putting greens had weeds in them
Thank you for the 4 star rating!
Challenging course
Great course and layout this course is a great challenge
Thanks for the feedback, we hope to see you back soon to earn that 5th star!
This course is very Challenging
This past Monday I played this course with a friend of mine. The weather was sunny and cool. We both found the course and surroundings to be quite attractive and very challenging.. We are above average golfers who, though we found some holes to be difficult, thoroughly enjoyed our experience playing this venue. We didn't expect the course to be in perfect shape as we played in late Fall. The greens had been aerated, sanded and fertilized. Still they putted true-- just a little on the slow side. However, this did not affect our overall impression of the course. It was a very satisfying round.
Thank you so much for all the great feedback! We are so glad you had such a great time out on the course. Hope to have you back soon!
A course you must play
A very good long and challenging course with large greens many of which have either steep drop-offs, approach bunkers or water. There's enough fairway to keep the ball in play but just enough woods/tall grass to keep easily keep you out of play. The course is coming back after a couple year dormant - the back-9 is in much better shape than the front, but I think it's only because the back-9 has been open longer since the course reopen. A must play in my opinion.
Thank you so much for the 5 Stars and all the positive feedback. We are so glad to see that you enjoyed playing at our course and we look forward to having you back!
A Course Reborn!
Course was outstanding! Conditions tee to green, were impeccable. All the greens were smooth, fast and rolled true. Bunkers are edged, trimmed and raked well.
The course is back to its previous high standard of conditions. It had been run poorly, but now under new management it is a restored gem.
Definitely get out and play it!
Hi Rich,
We appreciate the positive feedback. We have been working hard on getting the course back in top shape and we thank you for taking notice. We hope to see you back soon!
Gillette Ridge
Course is in very good shape...Enjoyed it very much..bring plenty of balls if your irons are not accurate to the greens...Plenty of bunkers and are in great shape..I'll be back :)
Thank you for your kind review! We are happy to see that you enjoyed your round at the course. We look forward to having you back!
Gillette Ridge Reborn
Where do I begin? Let's start with the staff. From the moment you roll up to the course there is someone there to greet you, take your bag, set up a cart and get you on your way. The Pro Shop staff is top notch and their resident PGA Pro, Lucas Hitchcock, is the guy you want to take a lesson from. The GM, Frank Ruffalo, will stop you to shake your hand and make sure your visit is the best it can be. The restaurant has a killer menu, great food and fantastic staff. This is how the front end should be. As for the course.....vast improvement from the goat farm it had become. With every passing day there are small but noticeable improvements to the fairways, greens, cart paths, bunkers and even the rough. They are DUMPING money into making this a top notch club that is challenging, playable and pretty nice to look at scenery wise. Check the place out. You'll be very surprised at what it has to offer. I have played it at least a dozen times since July and will continue as long as I have the ability to swing a club. Good work to all of you and thanks for giving me a place to call my club.
Thank you so much! This review just made our day! We have been working extremely hard on improving the course, and are so glad to see people are starting to take notice. We truly do have a great staff! We look forward to seeing you at the course again!
Good to see course open again
Tees fairways and greens in very good shape. Some rough spots off the fairway.
Some holes have wrong distance on tee markers. Look forward to playing again
Thank you for coming out and playing with us. We appreciate the feedback and look forward to having you back!
Gillette Ridge
Very solid. Tough sectioned off greens with small sections. Played with two regulars who helped me navigate. Which was helpful. Not too many drivers off the tee but I felt like the tees were up a box almost every hole. Played Blue (6700) but played more like (6300).
Not for the feint of heart with a bunch of forced carries off tees and approaches.
Good challenge but not over the top difficult.
Hi Joseph,
Thank you for coming out and playing a round with us. We hope you enjoyed your time at our course and will come back and play again in the future.
On the comeback trail but with one flaw
I know this course quite well, I even used to work maintenance here back during it's second year in existence. The few reviews since the re-opening seem to be mixed, but here is what I saw. The most important thing is the greens and I found them to be in excellent condition for speed and quality of roll, very pleased there. Also as has been pointed out, the bunkers are completely filled with sand for the first time ever! For now, there is probably a little too much in there, but by next season they should be great. Fairways were fine is most areas, and the tees were where I noticed the most bare spots, but that is not a huge issue. The tees were in bad need of a cut though, almost bordering on rough length in spots. I'm wondering how much longer conditions will stay good if they don't have enough staff to mow the tees. My main complaint, and it is a big one, is that for some reason, and i'd love to hear a logical explanation for this, because there can't possibly be one. They have taken a course that was designed to solve a problem with today's golf game in that there are often not enough teeing options for all levels of play and actually made less choice for everyone. The course was designed with 5 sets of tees in mind, the scorecard has 5 sets of tees on it. How many will you find when you get out to the course? 4!!! Just unbelievable in my view. And since they seem to have made new signs with 4 on them, I don't think this is just a temporary problem. I mean really, how hard is it to put another set of tee markers out there? Now it seems that the white course is a hybrid of the old white/senior tee and shorter than most people will want to play, while the blue is likely gonna be more difficult than most people want. I really don't get it. And seniors? Well I guess you're on the ladies tee now! So for that stupidity I am taking two stars off and I hope they reconsider their mistake. Besides that though, I paid 30 for a weekday afternoon here which is an excellent value for this quality of a course. I would definitely recommend giving them another shot. Maybe just make your own set of tees, all the original yardage markers are there and the scorecard is the same!
Thank you for the feedback regarding the tees. We have been working hard on improving the course and are always open to more suggestions. We really do hope you will give us another shot in the future.
Finally open again
I thought after 18 months closed the course would be prestine not what we found good but not great
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for coming out to play with us. Our work on improving the course is still continuing, but we have made some large improvements. We hope you will try out the course again soon.
Good to See Them Open, Needs Some Extra Care
First off, be prepared for a mix up in the pro shop if you book on Golf Now, they seem to be having some problems figuring out that they have been paid. They were very friendly dealing with the issue.
Starters & Cart Runners didn't have a clue. Thankfully the players all seemed to pair up. Starters were sending out 2-somes after 2-somes, then wanted me to go as a single? Made a great 4-some with others on the first tee. 5:15 pace needs help... on a Thursday afternoon!
The course is getting back into good shape. I'd imagine the miss management of the past and the 2 years shut down hurt the conditions. They seem to be making a real effort to building a fine course once again.
If you find a good deal on GN, give it a try, it's worth it. Full rate, I'm not sure about that yet.
Would not recommend if your a single!!!
I showed up at the course and was early for my time. I went inside and asked if I could go out early being a single. They said I was paired with two other players and I would have to wait for them. No problem!!! Except the other players didn't show up. I was left at the first tee for 45min. with no word from the starter as too when I could go out and play. After 45min of sitting around. Someone who I think worked in the golf shop came up to me and said they would check if I could go off the back. After ten more minutes he came back and told me I could jump around the back nine. I didn't pay to jump around!! I payed to play 18 holes of golf. They were nice people and all, But to treat someone like they did is just RUDE. I will not recommend this course to my golf group after what happened. I will make a point to tell as many people of this experience as I can. Maybe it will force the course to recognize all paying customers the same.
Better than ever & new, low rates
Two years ago Gillette Ridge closed due to mismanagement. Just this week it became fully open and is better than ever as a new management team has rejuvenated this once, great course. The fairways are lush (in spite of the drought the state is experiencing) the greens smooth and true, the sand traps full and fluffy. A lot of the rough has been trimmed back and workers were on the course cutting back even more. Trees are being trimmed or cut down, cart paths repaired and broken down cart path bridges replaced. They’ve even moved the tee sets up to a more realistic distance for the average golfer, whereas in the past they were back too far making the course very difficult. Now it is more playable and enjoyable. They’ve also charging very reasonable rates, especially for seniors and juniors. Eighteen holes weekdays (with a cart) is $35 for seniors, $20 for juniors. I highly recommend this course and please think about playing it soon before the word gets out how good it is.
HMMMM do you work there?
This guy is out of his mind about the greens. The greens have a bunch of crabgrass and chickweed on them since they let it grow out when it was closed. They were very slow and didn't roll true when I played last Saturday. They did fill the bunkers with sand though, I give credit for that.
Closed in 2015. Opening 2016?
The course closed at the end of 2014, stayed that way throughout 2015, but is scheduled to re-open in 2016 according to newspaper reports.
If anyone has any updated information, kindly share it with the golfing public.
Last chance !!!
I set a t-time through Gol;fnow.com at 11:40 and was playing at 12:10pm. Being late in the year the course was in pretty good shape. I think I got out for the last time this year !!!
BE AFRAID
I have been to this track several times and every time I wonder why I came back. The course is in horrible condition and is not well maintained in any way, shape or form. The greens are always a mess and there is more duck dung on the course than you could possibly fathom. Save yourself the pain and go elsewhere.
autumn golf
I love playing this course but don't even think about trying to play out of any of the traps as they have no sand in any of them.
Gillette is back
This course has come back considerably from two years ago.
