About
Houston National Golf Club, located in the northwestern part of the city, definitely follows the old adage that "everything is bigger in Texas." This whopping course stretches to 7,337 yards from the back tees. It is a lengthy golf course no doubt, but it doesn't just favor those who can hit long. The layout has a unique links design, so long hitters will be pleased but they will have to be careful of the numerous pot bunkers and other strategically placed hazards waiting treacherously throughout. The golf course has an interesting character that sets it apart from others nearby thanks to a landscape of rolling hills and hardly any trees, a surprise since there is no shortage of trees in the area. Houston National Golf Club's wide-open links design also subjects golfers to the strong prevailing winds, making several of the holes especially tricky.

Perfect day
I was pleasantly surprised that golf now had a convenient tee time with an option for seniors. Greens were excellent fairways were superb, this is currently my favorite course but it might not be for everyone since it is a links course where the wind must be played well. Clubhouse is well stocked, the grill pavilion has a no ce covered porch. This time of year the weather can often give you a chamber of commerce day like today...clear skies light winds, 81 degrees with humidity down around 40 percent. If you choose to play on a Friday, better allow four and a half hours of daylight. A threesome waived me through so my round took less than three and a half hours.

Pace of Play
We were a foursome on a Sunday morning so expected relatively slow play. However, it took us 2:05 to play the front (reasonable) BUT 2:45 to play the back. Almost a 5 hour round!!!! NEVER saw a marshal and have no idea why it was so slow. We've played there a lot but this is the 3rd time it's happened in the last 6 months so we won't be going back.

Think I played the wrong course
Didn’t notice til my range finder died and I started paying attention to the course card. Regardless, loved the course.

Great value
Course was in great shape. Fairways actually had grass and it was in great shape. Greens were very good as well a little slower than normal but rolled true. Everyone in the club house was friendly as well. I will be back

Decent change of pace course, nothing too exceptional.
Came to the course to play on a miserable rainy day, so I can’t blame the course for the wet conditions. Carts all drove quite slow which was annoying as the round progressed. Bunkers had standing water and were quite compact (again, some blame can be placed on the rain but not all). Most holes were decently forgiving, but being placed in a neighborhood made some misses quite dangerous. Our round came with a meal (hamburger, beer, chips) which was surprisingly tasty. Overall I’d come back again, but only on a nicer day and with a bit of a discount.
No effort to keep sand traps playable
Sand Traps are muddy hard mess. No effort to maintain. Would make this course exceptional if we had playable Sand Traps.

Decent value, rough around the edges
Have played this course several times. Course has length with several par 5's with challenging rough areas & slick greens. Sand traps vary in quality. Various spots of hardpan pop up along cart path areas . Course runs through residential areas. Requires driving carts up curb ramps, & under roads in concrete tunnel passways. Carts seem to be irregular in maintenance. When leaving cart paths.you will encounter bumps, roots, and very bumpy rides. Due to many mounds in many roughs, carts should be improved. After 18 holes, you sometimes feel you have been on a roller coaster just navigating this course.

Great value!
Lunch and drink included with your round! Greens were really good...fast.Fairways were decent... thin in a lot of places. It’s a great layout... tough but fair. For the price and especially with lunch included , you won’t find a better deal!

worth 40 bucks but not any more than that
Greens are very good to excellent but the fairways are dry as a bone with minimal grass coverage.
Pro shop sends out 2somes after 4somes rather than pairing groups up so the pace of play is erratic.
I have played here a dozen times over the past 5 years and I've never seen a marshal on the course!
