Tale of two 9's
First of all, this course is about an hour north of Austin so keep that in mind when booking a tee time. The course itself was in decent shape, but the layout is very confusing, with as much as 0.5 miles in between holes and a lot of skipping around to different areas. The front nine looks like it was cobbled together on a rather small piece of land and it is not in great shape, lots of bare spots.
The back nine however is very nice and in great shape. There are some excellent elevation changes which is rare for the area. I really enjoyed the back nine, but likely won't be back to Mill Creek due to the number of other options that are closer to Austin and in better shape for the money.
Fun little course, a little pricey for a 'public' course
Using Golfnow, I got a great rate on a twilight round, but the normal pricing is pretty high compared to other public courses in the area. The course is well groomed and healthy. Greens are pretty firm, but held a well-hit ball fairly well. The course is a fun little challenge, but not overwhelming. Has some well placed bunkers and water.
Greens a little rough; fivesomes allowed
Course is in pretty good shape particularly on the fairways. Greens are a bit rough with some areas where grass isn't filled in fully. Many fivesomes of locals play here, but they seem to play pretty fast as they use lots of personal power carts. Overall I would recommend Mill Valley.
Course in excellent shape, do not expect to walk
Course was excellent, greens looked a little thin but rolled great, this course is great value and plays very fast. I played during the week as a single behind a twosome, and still finished in under 3 and a half hours! It is a course that had 27 holes, and a bunch of holes were damaged by a flood so now it is 18 holes which is fine. The reason I say this is because the only negative about the course is it hard to follow the hole patten, they have markers but painted in dark blue on rocks (very hard to spot if you are not familiar with the lay out). Overall worth the trip, and Salado is a great town to go have a beer or glass of wine(lots of shopping if you bring your wife or girl friend).
layout is poor
Since the flood seems course has never recovered. Holes are disjointed. Par 34/35 which leaves you wanting more. Several tough holes then holes that are too easy. Greens real fast which is good but don't hold shots. Lots of sand but the traps are well maintained. Would be nice course to live by and play for practice daily but would not recommend it tho someone looking for a special treat.
Interesting how they cobbled together 18 holes out of the original 27 hole layout.
Our family had a nice visit to Mill Creek. With recent rains, course is in good shape with Texas summer almost here. Never had two 1/2 mile cart rides between holes before. Lets you cool off. :-) Needs 1 or 2 more par 5s. Pace a bit slow due to locals (high h-cappers) playing like every putt was to win The Open. Overall, a great day to play golf.
Fun course
Greens were fast and sand was fluffy! Course in good condition. Pace of play excellent!
Great course,fast greens.
This course is pretty challenging. Fairways are very nice with very quick/fast greens, but very good value for course.
Intersting layout
Greens, especially front side, were hard, bumpy-lacking grass and many dead spots...Ball simply bounced to the hole. Terrible..Back 8 holes on new side better...Playing there is a driving adventure as well-course spread out all over as they carved 18 holes out of 27...Still had one hole closed so played 17...Has potential with some TLC, but played like a below average muni...
Not the same Mill Creek
This is still a pretty good course in decent shape, with lots of fairway and green side bunkers. I played it once before the flooding however and it's really a shame how the course compares now. It hasn't lost the country club feel with plenty of arrogant acting people etc, but the course is just not worth the price anymore in my opinion. If you can catch a hot deal it's probably worth checking out though.
Very Nice Course. Well Maintained.
The course was in pretty good shape. The greens and fairways were not pristine, but definetly above par. The course seemed to be over booked though, and very spread out sometime there was an half mile drive between holes. It would make it incredible difficult course to walk.
Great neighborhood to play golf in.
I liked it so much that I have already played the course 2 more times since that date.
Decent course but unusual layout due to flood damage
It is a challenging but not super difficult course. Green was hard and fast. Bunker was in good shape. The biggest problem was finding the next hole. I understand flood damage from few years ago turned it into 27 hole course to 18 hole course. So the overall layout was really strange and frustrating. There were signs (painted on stones) but they were (1) not big enough, (2) numbers were hard to read, and (3) not well placed. We struggled to find the next hole several times, and had to drive around several times to find it. Definitely NOT a course you want to walk. We haven't seen a cart girl, either. It's a nice small town course.
I forgot how enjoyable this course was
Salado is closer to Round Rock then I had remembered and this course was a blast and in good shape. The greens were fine with just a tad amount of sand left.
Course re-design
It seems like this course is going through some kind of re-design period. There are holes that are not on the score card and directions to certain holes are not very clear. Sometimes you are driving on the cart path, then on gravel, even on a busy neighborhood street for a quarter mile before you find the next hole. Best of luck trying to find hole #12. The front nine plays like a muni. The back nine is in better condition and more wide open but the layout of the back nine in relation to the front nine makes no sense.
Great variety of features. Would play again.
This course has a great variety of challenging holes and others that have more open fairways. Here in the middle of March the greens were hard and very fast, but still playable. The course appeared to be well cared for. I would definitely play this course again.
Getting back to the Gem of Central Texas
There are still many challenges for this course. After 2 devastating floods, it appears they are on the right track. One improvement I definately noticed, was in the bunkers, of course it didn't help that I was in 9 of them, but they were the best I have seen in some time. Greens rolled fast but true.
Really enjoyed this course
I understand some of the reviews about hole layout being a little strange but they had 2 major floods and lost a couple holes. They're definitely getting back on track and the course itself was a lot of fun to play. There are large greens, small greens, elevated drives, great bunkers, pristine tee boxes, maintained fairways and greens. I wasn't sure what to expect going up there with the rating it has on golf now but was pleasantly surprised and will be playing here again. One thing that really impressed me is it had rained 1.5 inches the night before and by the time we tee'd off at 9 AM all of the bunkers had been drug so there were no hard sand or standing water shots. That was a real plus.
Course is not worth the money
I play a lot of golf and this is the worst course I have been on in several years. The greens need water and punching; they are bumpy and very inconsistent. The fairways are unpredictable; if you hit the fairway, the ball can go anywhere but where you would think. The bunkers need more sand and grooming. On the good side, the views are nice and the staff (the one that I dealt with) was nice. Please put water on the course and maybe do some maintenance before this jewel is gone.
