The Briggs Ranch Golf Club

Had the opportunity to spend a day at Briggs Ranch. It's an experience I can't recommend highly enough if you can make it happen.

Upon arriving, the clubhouse is very nice and welcoming. Pro shop and in house staff are all very friendly and helpful. The locker room is as nice as just about any you'll find, with an attached lounge full of TVs. It's a great place to hang out and have a drink after the round.

The practice area is everything you need. It wasn't the largest putting green I've ever seen, but plenty of room to get in some good lags. The range has plenty of targets to shoot at and is stocked with ProV1 practice balls. There is also a nice short game area to work on pitches and bunker shots.

But, of course, the real treat is the course. The zoysia grass fairways produce immaculate lies. It's always a treat to play a course with zoysia through the green. But when you get to the green, you get to experience some wonderful bent grass surfaces... a rarity in such a warm climate. They were receptive and rolled as true as can be. For the heat of summer in central Texas you'd be hard pressed to find a course in better condition.

The layout is also a lot of fun. With 5 sets of tees to challenge any skill level. From the Black tees (one from the back) there is a good variety of holes, including some very long par 4s, some reachable par 5s, and everything in between. Most of the fairways are pretty generous, but many have doglegs or bunkers that require picking the correct line for your shot. That also allows some strategy to come into play off the tee if you feel like taking some risks. Nowhere is that more true than the two great short par 4s. Both are right in the reachable range off the tee, but actually finding the green requires precision and there aren't many places to miss. I nearly turned one of them into a double bogey.

This course is part of the Dormie Network. The membership is quite limited and access to the course is kept to a minimum. That does wonders for pace of play and for feeling like you own the place... I played as part of a large group, and we really didn't see anybody else.

It's certainly a luxurious experience, and the course is worthy of elevated status. I can't quite go 5-stars since I don't find the course to be a truly spectacular layout, but it certainly won't disappoint either.
