Where golfers should travel this fall

These 5 five golf destinations are perfect to visit each fall.
Big Cedar Lodge - Mountain Top
With the 2025 opening of its Cliffhangers par-3 course, Big Cedar Lodge keeps leveling up for visiting golfers.

Fall is the ideal time to travel if you're a golfer.

Children are back in school and their parents are too busy driving them to school activities and sporting events to pull off a getaway. Many golf courses are still in good condition, and the changing of the leaves can add an extra shot of beautiful.

Between now and early October, the weather can be downright glorious almost anywhere in the country one minute but rainy and cold the next. Golfers will need just a bit of luck for perfect golf weather if they're considering places like New England or northern Michigan for a golf trip. I've taken many trips in mid to late October - from Ireland to upstate New York - where I struck gold with the temperature. It can happen, so it's often worth the roll of the dice.

I scoured our list of GolfPass golf packages to find a few golf destinations that make perfect sense in the fall. GolfPass+ members can receive $100 off certain stay-and-play packages - one of the many ways membership can pay for itself and then some. I can vouch that you can't go wrong with any of these options:

Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail

I can't think of a better one-two punch in fall than the RTJ golf trail and SEC football. The golf packages to Birmingham and Opelika can put you right in the middle of the action for Alabama or Auburn games. Make sure you book early as football is king in the south.

Missouri's Big Cedar Lodge

Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri's Ozarks near Branson has become one of America's top 10 golf resorts the last decade by being creative and continuing to innovate. The latest edition is the new short course called Cliffhangers where golfers tee off out of a cave and hit their ball through a waterfall. Sound fun?

Williamsburg, Virginia

I just got back from an August visit to Colonial Williamsburg, where I sweated my tail off on the golf course and was surrounded by kids everywhere in the historic district. Don't get me wrong: I loved it, but I know fall will be even better now that school is back in session. You can choose two different paths - either the convenience to walk everywhere from the Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection, where 27 holes of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club are across the street, or the slightly more private and secluded world of Kingsmill, a longtime host of the LPGA Tour.

San Antonio, Texas

Remember the Alamo ... at least when you're planning a fall golf trip. The summer swelter and crowds are gone along the Riverwalk. Golfers have two great Texas Hill Country resorts to choose from. If you want to splurge, play all three of their courses.
