ShadowGlen Golf Club
About
Located just 15 minutes northeast of downtown Austin, ShadowGlen Golf Course is considered by locals to be one of the area's hidden gems. At 7,174 yards from the back tees, it is a long, tough course that will test even the most seasoned players. Some consider it to be the most difficult public golf course in Texas. The layout has a links design that is mostly flat but there are a few hilly spots that can cause some trouble, especially the holes that were designed with steep drops. The narrow fairways require accuracy and the well manicured greens play fast and are often bordered by strategically placed bunkers or contoured mounding. There are also water hazards coming into play throughout, including the wandering creek that cuts across the golf course.

Great condition, couple of suggestions
Place is in really good condition, especially the greens. Fairways are a little shaggy in spots, but no big deal there.
Two biggest issues:
1) The rough is honestly too long and punishing. It makes it very hard to find balls (literally have to step on them sometimes to find it) and slows up play for wayward shots. Cutting the rough to a more manageable length would allow for faster play and honestly a bit more fun.
2) Blind shots. There are several blind shots and you have zero idea where the group in front of you is when hitting. The digital cart screens should always show you where the previous group is on a hole so that you don't mistakenly hit into them.
Will absolutely go back, but hope these suggestions are taken into consideration.
Great time at Shadow Glen
It’s been some years since I have played Shadow Glen and I was impressed. Great layout, great price, and the course looked great, especially at this time of the year when many public courses are struggling with the heat . I forgot the difference in the 2 nines, which provide the golfer a real challenge when they hit the back 9. Even the sand traps were in great condition which allows the golfer to play true sand shots.
I will be back soon!
Greens and Fairways Plush
Fairways and Greens in great shape. Some tee boxes a little patchy but not bad. Casa G’s after the round 👋🏼 ⭐️
Course was ok, staff was not
I would not play the course again because of staff.
Just knit picking
Great layout, staff, and always a great round. Worst part is they need to move the tee area around on the tee boxes on a lot of the holes, just bare from play. Green’s slower, and in decent shape after recently being punched but coming around nicely. Tee prices were discounted.
Interesting layout
If tee boxes were in better shape I would give it a better review.
Great Friday Course
Course was fun. Elevation changes were great. Not the hardest course I’ve played but hard enough to keep it interesting. Greens were consistent. Best bang for your buck on a Friday round near Austin
Good enjoyable game of golf
The overall condition of the course was very good. Greens are a bit slow but ran true. Pace was really good and we never waited on any hole. Staff are all friendly and one really feels welcome
Challenging Austin public course, but bit pricey
Overall, good experience on a challenging track. Played tees one up from tips, which play almost 7200 yards. Even then, the bronze tees play 72.8/139 slope and rating and 6635 yds. Carts are old and slow, but due for update in next 6-8 weeks they say, which will add GPS. Some of the tee boxes were in poor shape, and the chipping area is horrendous. The putting green was nice, and they included range balls in green fee. Range was grass, not mats, but the target areas not marked for distance. Would have been helpful to have a guidebook for recommended targets on each hole, as some shots are blind, and some trouble spots not readily evident from tee. My Garmin watch did not have accurate hole info for the course, and wasn't synching for distances so needed a rangefinder. Overall, was a nice test, but not worth $100 bucks per loop. Austin overall is way overpriced, but demand >> supply for public golf so they get away with a little gouging.
Course is getting much better in overall condition fairways and greens . Would like a little faster greens but given recent rains probably not cut low because of it. Recent conditions best I’ve seen in a while here. Will definitely play more often if possible.
Good Course
Good course but don’t care too much for the layout, it’s definitely challenging so it can be fun in that aspect.
Good challenge
I haven't played Shadowglen in a couple years so headed out there with 3 of my buds on a hot Texas day. Course is in great shape with my only complaint being greens are slightly slowly than I'm used to. Staff are great here. 1 of our carts had a throttle problem on the 5th hole and the Marshall just gave us his and took the problem child away. Cost has gone up a bit in the last few years, but so has every other public course in the Austin area. Love the layout of the course! Requires accurate tee shots and a solid wedge game. Will play again in the near future!
Fun!
Consider this my home course. Greens and tees are in pretty good shape. Friendliest staff and cart girls. Mondays are thin due to few golfers, so staffing and marshaling is limited. Not really needed if you get off mid-day. Recommended.
We appreciate the 5 star review!
1. We have allowed the rough to grow a little longer than normal so that it could recover from last year's drought. We've been fortunate enough to have more rain this year which has helped.
2. Our carts are equipped with a gps feature that will warn you when there are golf carts in the blind spots. You will get another notification when these areas become clear.
