Bay Point Resort - Nicklaus Course
About
Bay Point Golf Club's Nicklaus Course at Sheraton Bay Point Resort is the only Nicklaus Design course in Northwest Florida. The golf course was formerly Lagoon Legend, which had a reputation for being one of the Florida Panhandle's toughest layouts. In 2004, the golf course closed and underwent a major renovation by the Nicklaus Design team. It reopened a year later with rave reviews. The redesign included restructuring the tees, greens, and bunkers and also re-contouring the fairways. The scenic landscape of scrub oaks, towering pines, and saltwater marshes was carefully preserved though. The golf course maintained the challenging aspects of the original but infused a play-ability that makes it accessible to all skill levels. Also like the former course, the new Nicklaus design offers the same stunning views of St. Andrew's Bay. In the fall of 2018, the Nicklaus Course completed a greens conversion to Tif-Eagle Bermuda-grass greens to bring championship greens to a championship course. Bay Point Golf Club has won the Panama City News Herald's "Best of Bay" in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The Nicklaus Course has hosted US Open Local qualifiers and is a home course of the FSU Women's Golf Team and will host their Division 1 Invitational in February of 2020.

Not worth what you pay
Course was a real disappointment. We should have listened to all the other negative reviews but thought we’d give it a chance. The course was in poor condition and is not on par with other area courses that give you a far better experience. Drive to Destin if you want to play golf.
Course
Fairways cut way too low, so are the greens. Greens are too steep, also some greens lean front to back. Not fun. Like the layout of the course though. Tee boxes were very fair but the ground was so hard I couldn't hardly get my tee in the ground. When you pull the flagstick out of the hole, the ball is supposed to come out with it. It doesn't. The metal piece at the bottom of the flagstick needs a flat spot on the bottom to pull the ball out of the hole like other flagsticks.
Unusually poor conditions
I have played this course dozens of times, dating back to the previous layout as The Legends. This is the worst condition I've seen it. Many tees have little to no grass and all of the greens are in poor shape. The new owners, The Sheraton, don't seem to want to spend money on maintaining the course.
They have already decided to abandon The Meadows course after damages from Hurricane Michael a few years ago. This would be a huge loss to the Bay area if the Nicklaus Course goes the same way.
Poor greens
Course had good bones, but there were sandy spots on the fairways and very spotty greens. Paying over $100 for a round of golf, you expect good course conditions, but I felt like you couldn’t putt it on the greens without putting through a sandy repaired area or patches of foreign grass. Overall, we were disappointed in the value for what we paid.
Bay Point
Staff was great. Course layout is challenging but fun to play. Have played this course for years. The condition of the course was the worst in memory and not worth the cost to play. A real shame.
Great Course!
My son and I played this on April 3 and again on May 7. Very challenging course….but a lot of fun at the same time. Great pro shop. Staff is friendly. Range is adequate. Greens had some light weeds to them, but still as smooth and true as any nice course you would play. We love the place!
mixed experience
First impression... The guys outside are a real joy and so helpful. They are almost worth the cost of enduring this course. The guy behind the counter was obnoxious and acted like I was a real bother coming in. He should be fired.
No idea if this course is normally in better condition, but it was really bad shape. Greens were especially bad. Overrun with poa, lots of dead spots that had been filled with sand. Lots of sand...
I have played several Nicklaus courses over the years, and you would never know it if this wasn't the big bragging point. I planned on playing three days, but left the course when slow play backed everything up when I hit #13.
It's a $30 course, not $115.
So sad !
BP
Terrible. Condition. Limited range balls for warmup. Greens painted green for greater appeal. Needs serious attention very disappointing
Rough shape
First clue was how many open tee times there were on a weekend!
Nice people, and they seem to be trying, but the course conditions have gone way down hill since last year. Every green has massive dead dirt sports painted green, po is rampant, and the traps are filled but the sand is tough to play from, just piles of that “sugar sand”.
Was hopeful with the demise of the second course, they would have spent some $$ here, but beyond basics they are not .
Holes 4 and 5 are still great holes!
