Blue Ridge Shadows Golf Club

I've played this course about a dozen times this year starting in mid-summer, most recently this cool October morning. It has a combination of factors that make it, for me, the hands down choice in this area. First and most importantly for me, the course is in amazing condition, EVERYWHERE:

Tee boxes - generous in area, level, elevated, and high quality turf;

Fairways -so PLUSH; the turf quality of these fairways is far superior to anything I've played this year, including the better courses in this area and a couple of resort courses in the Williamsburg area. The fairways are FAIR, meaning, it's not that hard to find them off the tee.

Bunkers (nice white sand, consistent throughout the course, and drain well)

Greens - WOW. WOW. They roll fast and true, but they are NOT hard-pan, they hold approach shots very well.

The field crew is very considerate and friendly, as are the clubhouse guys.

About the layout. The first couple of rounds here are intimidating; Every hole has a forced carry, and every green is protected with a sand or water hazard. That said, my 15 index game can still settle into an enjoyable round. This course makes you learn to make good decisions, or else suffer. Like all good/great courses, the design offers you a way to play it, but you have to respect what's going to happen to you if you fail to pay attention or disregard risks.

The par 3's merit their own review: they are long. Not going to be a place to make up for a blowout on the prior hole.

Overall, I recommend this course to everyone, especially those who would be able to play it several times, because I think it deserves the effort to get to know it a little.

Course was in great shape! Greens were fast & true. Fairways were gorgeous - played the ball down. Last time I was here 6 years ago the course was in bad shape. Well not anymore! This course is in better shape than Rock Harbor. Have always enjoyed this layout. I will definitely be back. Wish it was closer to Leesburg.

Greens are so fast that there is no way to controll what you are doing

This is what I was looking for on a Virginia course! Great, challenging tee shots that were stunning from different elevations! I could tell the course was working hard to recover from being in not so good conditions but they were pretty good! Greens roll true, but my only gripe is golfers don’t fix their ball marks on the green, but that’s anywhere you go

I played in 90 degree plus heat. The course is dry and the greens are firm but still in very good condition. I played in about 3 hours without being rushed. The staff is always friendly and continue to do a great job.

Challenging, lots of elevation changes. Well bunkered and water on most of back . A great test of mountain golf . Not too many blind shots , standing on the white tees you can plot your course easily to avoid trouble .

My son and I LOVE this course! It is challenging especially from the blues. The elevation changes are fabulous and the greens have always been in very good condition! Smooth and pretty fast but not glass..... just right!

Only complaint was recently the group in front of us fell more than a hole behind and even though we saw a ranger on the course it persisted.

The course has a great mountain layout and is in excellent condition...greens are true and fast, and fairways' turf condition is great. Need to keep your ball in the fairway because the rough is high and penalizing. Overall it's a challenging but fair course.

This place is a hidden gem. The greens were impeccable , views breathtaking, coarse challenging but still forgiving. I can’t wait to play again.

The course is in perfect condition. Fairways are finally dry and tee shots are rolling out. Tee boxes are well-maintained. The greens were excellent—true roll and fast enough that you had to pay attention. The bunkers are all renovated and very playable (except for the footprint of the dude in front of us who couldn’t be bothered to rake up after himself, but I digress...) Bottom line...staff is doing everything the can to make this a player-friendly course and it shows. If you haven’t played here, it is worth the trip.

I have wanted to play this course for awhile and was not disappointed. Friendly staff, reasonable price and near birdie on the first hole started the day right. Weather was perfect - nice breeze. Loved the layout - elevation changes were great. Course is in nice shape. Probably beautiful in the fall when leaves are changing.

This course is a fun track that was in great shape. However, we had 5+ hour round on a Thursday—that started with being put behind a 5some. Turns out, the whole course was badly backed up and there was no ranger. Next time, I’ll go somewhere else.
