Royal Kunia Country Club

About
Royal Kunia Country Club boasts a reputation as one of the best and most scenic golf courses on Oahu. The course is perched high above the Ewa plain, offering panoramic views of the entire South Shore, stretching from Pearl Harbor to the downtown skyline of Honolulu to the famed Diamond Head. The layout rolls across a gently undulating landscape, offering a diverse layout of short par 4s and demanding par 5s. Water comes into play on a few holes and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout. Its coastal location guarantees that wind will be a factor in determining your outcome. The signature hole comes exactly midway through the course. Royal Kunia Country Club's par-5 ninth requires three strong shots that avoid the numerous troubles from tee to green including bunkers, trees, water, and of course, wind.

course could be nice but ...
No starter so people arrived at tee box and started without regard for tee time, no Marshall to keep pace of play and no club house (a trailer). Could be nice but won't golf here again
Beautiful and challenging
Wonderful and well maintained. View of Pearl Harbor and Waikiki breath taking challenging course well worth the time and money
Elevation!
The view for the island either mountain or ocean u get both at different holes, u get those due to course is on the middle of the island, the elevation and wind plus dumpy surface does provide plenty of challenges. Oh par5 is long especially playing from blue with water (wait… water in the mountain course? cool). Enjoy!!
Open layout with good views. Greens & bunkers could be better.
Overall, enjoyed playing at Royal Kunia as a non-resident tourist to Oahu. Rented clubs ($50) and got a set of men's right handed Taylormade Aero-Burners. Came with a near-new 58 deg Cleveland CTX sand wedge which I was very thankful for because the A wedge in the iron set was horrible (as most set-wedges are). Otherwise, the rentals worked great and overall were in okay shape except the putter (Taylormade Daytona) really needed a new grip probably 2-3 years ago. Would have been nice to get a few balls and tees with the rentals, but I brought my own.
Course overall was in good shape. Very open layout with just a few holes / locations where you have to be aware and careful of water or a waste area. Most holes you can miss the fairway or playing area altogether and still recover due to the openness between holes. Tee boxes were immaculate / perfectly flat. Fairways were excellent. Rough was not punishing at all (which is either good or bad depending on what you're looking for). Holes are scenic and several times you have a great view of the city. Greens have character and are overall pretty interesting but the condition of the grass leaves something to be desired. I'm not sure of the type of grass (poa? bermuda?) but it was not as cut / pressed as I would expect for a $90 round, but I realize the residents pay a lot less. For what the residents pay, I think it's fine given the quality of the course overall. The greens are still very playable, but again, just not great and tough to read especially when the grass is a bit longer. The bunkers - although nice to look at, are really bad in general and have very little sand in some cases. You're more than likely hitting off of packed dirt / clay with a little bit of sand on top.
Carts are gas powered and seem about 15-20 years old. Work fine functionally, but not what I would call "nice".
Pace of play was great when I played (we were a two-some at 1230PM in the late summer) and we finished in less than 4 hrs.
Overall, enjoyed myself and would recommend / come back.
Decent value
Thursday, 11:28 tee time, started on 10. Played with one other gentleman, nice guy Overall course is in good shape. Greens were sandy/aerated/bumpy and fast, but the grass should fill in soon. Bunkers could have used a bit more sand. Tee boxes and fairways are in fine shape. Some weeds in the rough but not much. Pace was fine until hole 4, our 13th. There were four groups on hole 5 when we got there but by hole 7 the pace had improved and we finished our round in under 4 hours. I'm a HI resident and got a good deal so was overall happy with the round.
Lovely course with great views
The shop and carts need major updates but the course is beautifully kept and the views are amazing
Good Course
overall pleased but pace of play was horrendous so got called in after 16. marshalls woukd be good to keep people moving, no reason for 6 hr rounds here.
Great Course, Fun Time
We have been playing here ever since Covid, because it is impossible to get a public course tee time anymore. The people are great & friendly! The round can be slow sometimes bc so many want to play, but well worth it.
Overall okay experience
Thee course was in pretty good condition, bunkers maintained, yardage markers were spot on, greens were The only complaint I have is the pace of play. The whole round was hit one shot, wait 5 minutes. If the club would space the tee times out a little more, maybe 10-12 minutes between spots, it would eliminate the hold up. At one point we had 3 4-somes on the same hole.
Pace
5hr30min to finish 18 holes. The parties ahead were slow incredibly slow. No Marshall regulated, and when we tried to play ahead, the parties got mad. Beautiful place and good condition, horrible pace.
Nice layout
This course has a “championship” feel to it. The layout is fantastic and course conditions were excellent.
There are a few drawbacks
1) golf carts is feels like it’s been around for 20 years. Very old and needs an upgrade
2) pace of play was “slow” for a weekday. Way too many groups on the course. Need to space out the tee times. There are no Marshall watching the pace
Overall I really enjoyed the scenic views and course condition. Would absolutely play it again
Great course at a great price
Royal Kunia golf course is one of my favorite courses. The entire staff is very professional and always very accommodating. The weather yesterday was beautiful and the pace of play was great.
Beautiful Views
The greens were sandy and it was difficult for anyone in our foursome to read them well. We all putted below average and could not get dialed in. The course is in good shape and is fun to play with spectacular views from nearly every hole. Moderate difficulty. Clubhouse and pro shop are not Country Club caliber. We payed $65 each with a cart and that was fine. I would not play here if I had to pay $120 or more which is the sticker price. More of a nice muni than a Golf Club or Country Club.
