Good Layout, Lack of Maintenance
One of the best layouts I have ever played, but it was clear the course needed some work. The greens, fairways, and tee boxes were very well kept but weeds were around and in the bunkers, all of the waste bunkers had been taken over by weeds, and every green side and fairway bunker had little to no sand in them. This course had great potential, but needs a little work. Would definitely play again.
sand please!
clubhouse restroom was outside in a fancy port-a-potty...
great tees, fairways, greens but no sand in the many many many bunkers... could be an outstanding course! several great holes! just add sand please!
Great value, cool breeze in afternoon
This is a great deal. The greens are well maintained, tons of water. The bunkers seem unfinished but this is well worth the trip. Not much rough but the winds are a challenge. There are few amenities at this point but overall a great deal. Going back today! Shocked that it isn't busier.
So good I played again
After playing a round on Tuesday at North River, I went back on golfnow and got a tee time for Thursday. The course is great and for 17 bucks you aren't going to find a better value. We played both rounds from the black tees and it is a brute. If you are looking for a challenging round on a great layout play North River.
Great course for the price
The course was in good condition for the area. The greens were really smooth and everything else was well kept. No real complaints, other than a few thin fairways. Cant beat it for 18 dollars.
See/Play it one time but...
At the end of the day my Son & I figured the 40 mph gust + 12 Stimp meter greens were just to much for us to handle. It is a beautiful layout that eats acres of land (largest spread I have ever played) and the Golf-Now price was just right for the beating we took however we will only see it again as a memory because even if the winds were calm it would be hard for a 10 hcp to keep it under 95. My goal was 4 pars...had 1 (A wicked par 3)...but did have 4-5 more putts at it but could not keep the ball online with the winds.
Shout out to GolfNow though because we would not have experienced this course at the rack rate and for better or worse we can at least say we have played it.
Wide open with many bunkers..
Lots of sand traps. Pretty open, few mature trees, great breeze.
Courteous staff, good value.
Worth the Drive
I've played this course several times, and the length, water hazards, and constant prevailing wind make it one of the toughest I've ever played. There is ample room off the tee, but water on every hole (yes, EVERY hole) and winding fairways puts a premium on course knowledge and strategy. The wind will make it difficult to reach a couple of the holes into the wind in regulation, but those shots can be made up on the downwind holes. This course doesn't get a lot of play because of its location and lack of residential growth north of Beaufort. I think it's been tough for them to keep the fairways and bunkers in tip top shape because of this. However, I am continually impressed with how they are able to keep such pristine bentgrass greens so close to the coast. Overall, I would definitely recommend this course to anyone visiting the area.....and make sure to get a yardage guide!
Great Layout! Best course at crystal coas!
Great Layout! Best course at crystal coast! Can't beat it for the price.
Enjoy this course
We play North River when we can, really enjoy it, challenging and fun. Usually in great condition for a younger course, however fairways are dry and thin in spots, greens are great
staff is great. Great value
Great Place Great Price Great People
The course was in decent shape and was very playable. Fairways were hard and fast but greens were receptive to irons. FIX BALL MARKS! I repaired at least 5 on each hole and as many as 10 on one green. But they rolled true and a missed putt was my fault not the green. I played with a senior friend and we allowed one group to play through on #6 but that was the only time we had to wait at all. Bunkers looked bad but I was fortunate not to have to play from them all day. The wind was its usual 15 or so MPH which makes you think about your club selection. I booked our tee time at great price and we plan to return as often as possible. If you have not played NR you owe it to yourself to give it a try. Best layout in the area.
good layout, needs work on sand traps
5/9/13: I have played this course many times, but not in the last two years. Great layout, difficult, good greens, fair fairways, AWFUL sand traps! Poor clubhouse, and not a good design for check-in to getting your golf cart. For a very cheap price OK for the money. I paid $16. Not worth the $40 regularly asked for green fees. Has gone downhill since I played two years ago.
Enjoyable round even though all the sandtraps were full of water and washed out (unplayable). I really love this course and it is ashamed about the poor maintance! Again, the greens and fairways are not the problem. A great course fallen to the poor economic times.
Great potential
If you enjoy Cutter Creek, then you will enjoy this course. Think of this course as a baby Cutter Creek with less elevation change and less danger. The major downfall and only reason that I would not recommend North River at this time is because it is not ready for play. The FW's have not set in, leading to 60-80 yards of roll with a wood, it was even raining when I played(I stopped using my driver after #7, even playing the tips I had no issue getting into scoring range due to how hard the FW's were). Greens are quick, but again they are very hard and not responsive to a well struck iron. The waste bunkers are not complete and look more like water runoff and many of the FW and greenside bunkers did not have bunker sand in them. The front desk staff was less than courteous and they ended up working on the #9 and #18 greens during my round, cutting those holes short for me (no notice in the clubhouse or from the staff). I will definitely play the course again, but I will wait at least a year before making the hour drive. Hopefully with a little time and a summer season, the course will be ready to play; it has potential to be a phenomenal course, just like Cutter Creek.
Find a deal
I played the course on Easter Sunday and got a great deal from Golfnow, nearly 75% off my round. Course was dormant due to the long winter, but fairways were in decent shape and greens were very well maintained. Course is not difficult and has many enjoyable and challenging holes, especially a few par 3's over water. Regular price may be a little steep for this course, but well worth it at a discounted price. If you have trouble staying in the FW's, you may want to load up on balls as all the FW's are treelined or marked OB due to houses. Long hitters and low handicaps will find this course to play pretty easy and enjoyable.
bad time of year but really tough course.
Course will be nice when spring comes. This is a very challenging course.
Course is in major need of upkeep
I understand that this is still in the winter season, but this golf course really needs a lot of work before I play there again. Maintenance is lacking, there is hardly any sand in the bunkers. One of the greens had tire ruts like someone was doing donuts on it. I'm glad I got the round for $24 instead of the $44 they regularly charge.
Nice course -- great shape, challenging but not too difficult.
Very nice and challenging course -- varied layout and topography and for January, in great shape. Greens in great shape -- smooth and true -- some with significant break. Only part of course needing attention were the traps which lacked much sand -- but considering the time of year and the considerable rains lately -- that was understandable. Will play again soon.
Nice course and challenging
Good staff, scenic course, and provides a good challenge.
A hidden gem
Great course layout but be prepared for a lot of distance between greens and tee boxes. Bunkers are plentiful but need work. Greens are in great condition. Lots of water.
Challenging course. 17 & 18 are two difficult finishing holes.
Challenging course. 17 & 18 are two difficult finishing holes. They have trouble maintaning the sand traps. But a great deal, nice course and friendly staff.
