Deerfield Golf & Tennis Club
About
Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del., is a 145-acre public course, billed as a “natural treasure.” The 18-hole championship course gets the moniker thanks to its surroundings -- the ancient forest of White Clay Creek State Park. The 145-acre play, acquired by the state of Delaware in 2005, is a par-70, 6,323-yard golf course that features rolling terrain, smooth bent grass putting surfaces and scenic vistas. The mix of memorable, distinctive holes adds to the difficulty, as does the memorable, heavily wooded setting and dramatic elevation changes. Before or after your round at Deerfield Golf Club, enjoy the large putting green, full-service practice range, or lighted tennis and paddleball courts.

Course was spotless. Greens need a little love
The course itself is challenging. It played beautifully. Some greens are maintained just fine but there are still quite a few that need some attention,
Also don't bother with a post round drink. Bartender was horrible. Sat at the bar right in front of him with only 7 other people around and didn't so much as get a hello for almost 10 minutes.
Nice layout
This is a great course, that has issues with the greens, currently. I play this course 2-3 times per year, and this last time noted that the greens were in need of attention. Very slow, and not in the best shape. The elevation changes and good greens are what makes this course special, but the slow pace of play (Sunday afternoon), combined with poor attention to greens and fairway maintenance were disappointing.
Course was in great shape for winter and the price was also great.

Very challenging course
First time playing course. After a lot of rain for last couple of weeks, today was cart path only. Due to my age and heart condition, I was really beat by the end of the round. There is not a flat fairway anywhere on this course, so it was climbing up and down hill all day. I really like the course but wont play again unless I can drive my cart onto the course. Even at that the course was in fine shape for this time of the year. There are a lot of uphill blind shots, recommend having a GPS. You will not hit from many flat lies, be especially prepared for sidehill lies. Greens relative to rest of course were easier. I will be back but when the course dries out.
WEATHER WAS CHILLY
COURSE SOGGY FROM ALL THE RAIN AND WHEN WE CHECKED IN WE WERE TOLD THAT THERE WERE 8 TEMP GREENS BUT ACTUALLY THERE WERE 12 TEMP GREENS SO IT KIND OF TOOK ALL THE FUN OUT OF PLAYING THE COURSE .........BOOKED TEE TIME ON GOLF NOW SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN OPTION TO EITHER GET MONEY BACK AND OR BOOK A ROUND FOR ANOTHER DAY WHEN ALL THE REGULAR GREENS WERE BEING USED .........CAN TELL YOU THAT BOTH MYSELF AND OTHER PLAYER WERENT HAPPY ABOUT THE ARRANGEMENT BUT OUR HANDS WERE TIED CAUSE WE ONLY PLAYED CAUSE THE GREEN FEE WAS NON- REFUNDABLE .................WOULD ONLY RECOMMEND IT IF COURSE IS IN FULL USE AND NOT TEMP GREENS OR CART PATH ONLY .........
A great course that you need to play more than once.
Winter conditions made the course very hard. Fast sometimes bumpy greens. Up hill, down hill, and side hill on almost every hole. Well maintained for December in Delaware.
This course has some tough holes
I enjoy playing Deerfield because the tough holes make me concentrate more than most courses and if i screw up- I can try again at another time
Great layout
Long round due to Veteran's Day holiday. Course is well maintained for the time of year. Challenging layout - a few holes are difficult (>200 yd uphill par 3 from the white tees), a few provide birdie opportunities.
Nice - Pricey
Course was in good shape as it should be for the time of year. Pin placements were brutal. You do not want to be above the hole. On #10 I was 12 feet below the pin, putted the ball 1 ft past the hole and it came back down to where I started. Good layout. For the money I would prefer White Clay 100%
Excellent Course for the Money
This course is by far the best value I have ever seen. Inexpensive during non-peak time, very good condition, excellent layout and very fast play. The only con, it is a little out of the way.
Great course - great layout - great golf
This is a gem in Delaware. Anytime you can play here do so. The layout, elevation changes, and hold locations are challenging enough to test your mettle often - yet still give you a chance to make par better if you think about the shot ahead.
they dont build them like this anymore.....
You wont see many public courses like this one.. Its a strategic gem that requires every club in the bag.. Deerfield is an old fashioned tree lined beauty of a course.. You'll look at the scorecard and think its a short course... then you'll go out and play.. and experience the elevation changes and narrow fairways and realize this course plays much longer than listed. You'll need to play here a few times to score well since club selection can be very hard with judging distance on many of the uphill 2nd shots.. The course still has a private club feel and you are treated very nicely by the staff.. Last time I played here,,, there was a slow group ahead of us and the manager came out onto the course and gave me a 60 dollar voucher to come play again.. How nice was that? This place is one of my favorites in the entire Philly area... and I've played em all..
good course course with some nice challenges.
Course is set with challenges with some par 4 holes very long. It is the fall season so the biggest challenge was finding slightly pushed or pulle tee shots. The amount of leaves on the course makes it difficult to find the ball where under normal summer period would not be a problem.
Bring your A-game or a lot of golf balls.
This course is difficult for the average or below average golfer due to hills, trees, slopes and slippery greens. It took nearly five hours to play it on a weekday afternoon. Unless you get it for a great price, you might want to look elsewhere, especially when the leaves are falling.
Great experience in every aspect. Will definately be returning.
Challenging course with no lollygagging in front of you.
Nice public course
Would recommend, but there are not many fairways that are not sloped
Forgettable
Pretty average course. It was in decent shape, some of the greens were a bit rough. The layout didnt impress me as I found the holes meshed together too much. Other: The staff was friendly and the clubhouse was very nice.
A Challenge
One of my favorites. A mix of hole lengths gives you opportunities to put shorter clubs in your hand on some holes. Elevation changes do put a premium on club selection. A little pricey, but still worth checking out.
The elevation changes on this course make it play much longer than the score card reads. greens, fairways, and even rough is well manicured
Deerfield golf and tennis club is a great value. I would recommend to anyone. Two thumbs up!
The course is my favorite in the area
Deerfield is wonderfully maintained golf course ,the ungilating fairways are a great challenge, the greens are of average speed they could be cut lower but always well maintained , ,and the club house and resturant provides a beautiful setting for weddings, outings along with a great casual bar I give it a 10 +++
