White Horse Golf Club
About
White Horse Golf Club has one of the toughest courses in the Northwest. Situated on the Kitsap Peninsula, the course is located just five minutes south of the Kingston ferry terminal. The course sits on the Puget Sound between the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, offering panoramic views on every hole. When the Suquamish Tribe bought the club in 2010, one of their top priorities was to make the course more playable. They enlisted John Harbottle for the job, a local architect who has designed several layouts throughout the state. By taking out nearly half of the bunkers, he opened up the greens and made them more approachable. He also widened the fairways and made the landing areas more generous. Since the update, White Horse Golf Club has become one of the most popular on the peninsula.

Cartball Course
Golf is a sport, and basketball is a sport. In golf, the physical exercise component of the sport has been minimized by the introduction of golf carts to carry players around. The USGA has stated that if you are riding a cart to play, then you are not playing golf, but something different that perhaps could be called cartball. After the golf cart was introduced, the design of many courses became dependent on the golf cart. White Horse is one such cart ball course. Anyone wanting to walk and play golf should probably avoid While Horse. The day before I played White Horse I played Ocean Shores Country Club in slightly under three hours. I played White Horse in slightly over four hours. That is over an hour of walking concrete paths to connect golf holes. Jack Nicklaus has a famous retort to his wife when she claimed he should walk the mall with her since he walked for a living where he replied that the difference is that he walks on grass for a living. In basketball, you can take the walking and running component out by playing in a wheelchair. Would you choose to play your basketball in a wheelchair?
I have spent most of my life in a rural environment. I see and appreciate what nature provides. I do not appreciate how White Horse is so heavily shaped. I played Discovery Bay Golf Club the day after playing White Horse. Discovery Bay has similar mountain terrain for part of the course, but looks far more natural than the heavily shaped White Horse. I suppose part of the shaping is to mimic the natural dune shapes you find on a links course at the seaside. If so, then it fails noticeably at looking like natural dunes. Old news articles say the course went into foreclosure for $5.7 million dollars. Also, that shapers claiming to be among the best in the world were brought in from Hawaii to do the shaping. Since the most successful courses being built at the time Wild Horse was being built were by Tom Doak, and by the team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, I would suggest they have the best shapers. Wine Valley is another superbly shaped Washington public course that did not have to bring in shapers from Hawaii. In conclusion, Wild Horse is poorly shaped and overly done to be a naturally beautiful golfing environment.
White Horse has a deserved reputation of being difficult. Part of this reputation has to come from parts of the back nine where the terrain is a bit too extreme for good golf, and instead of shaping to ease the extremeness, it was shaped in a fashion that added difficulty. Instead of softening slopes, the slopes appear to have been shaped into more extreme slopes that give more extreme bad bounces.
Golf was developed as a fun past time, and developed that way for a long time. Unfortunately Robert Trent Jones brought on an era of difficulty overruling the fun. At the end of the last century the pendulum began to shift back to fun golf design. It appears that White Horse was built to live in a bygone era.
Really nice
It's a great course with challenging holes but space for forgiveness in the drives. Had a great time!
Fantastic Course condition
White Horse seems to always be in one of the best shapes around. The fairways today were like country club quality.
The greens were rolling perfectly even if they might be a little difficult to read. The overall experience was great and we will definitely be back.
Great Cocrse!
The front 9 is fairly tree-lined. The back nine is much more fun with some wacky short par 4's. They are some I have never played before. You can hit the fairway and still be on a huge slope. There is very little rough, it goes from fairway to long grass native in a hurry. All 18 greens are long and skinny, yes every single green is longer than it is wide. It will test your chipping game. Fun cource, would recommend.
Absolutely beautiful course
This was my first time playing White Horse and I can say that I enjoyed every minute of my time there. The staff is wonderful and the food is phenomenal. I gave pace of play a 3 out of 5 because every hole I had to wait. It may have been the time of day I went, but again, the course is beautiful and I didn’t mind waiting. I got to enjoy the scenery.
Beautiful layout and a great course
Just completed a buddies trip which included The Home Course, Gold Mountain Olympic, Gold Mountain Cascade and White Horse. White Horse was our favorite! It sits on a beautiful piece of land and is very well maintained. There are 5 sets of tees. We chose the white tees and found the course very playable with plenty of challenge. Though there is a good distance between holes, we found this to be a great course for walking... 19,000 steps and 11 flights later.
Why not play white horse....?
I No reason I can think of... price is moderate, course was challenging but well kept, lots twists and turns but nothing too drastic. Food was great hot and quickly done. A+ rated
One of the best courses in the state.
This course is in immaculate condition. The course is extremely challenging. Playing here is well worth the drive it takes to get here.
Beautiful course
A Marshall would be good. Got behind a 5some with 2 carts and 4 sets of clubs. One guy was walking and was constantly walking to a cart to grab a club. Or waited till someone was done using a club. Got so out of hand we skipped the 9th hole and didn't even want to play back 9 so we left. Might try and play it again, but insure at this time.
Beautiful, well maintained and challenging.
White Horse has in my opinion the best maintained course on the peninsula, and the nicest staff. It is a tough course to play, even after they softened the course a few years ago. The fairways roll in every direction, so you’re often hitting above or below your feet, even after a fairway drive. The fairways are also generously wide, but the rough is only a few feet wide before yielding to impenetrable brush. The combination makes for a challenging course, but in a very fun way. They have a shuttle from the Kingston ferry for free, so it’s accessible even from Edmonds/Mukilteo area. Best drainage of any course around in the winter, and is empty on most off season days, so great in the winter months. In the Summer, it’s busy with club and league play, but everywhere is, so no worse than normal, I average 4.5 hour rounds here at the peak of summer.
This course has a great layout.
I like the variety of hole configurations here. Makes you use all the clubs in your bag and all different kinds of shots.
The risk reward is great as well.
I will be back again to this course soon. One of my favorites to play.
Great Track
Probably one of the best courses in Washington State! Course conditions were outstanding. Greens were the best I’ve played in the states!!!
Beautiful course
My husband and I had a fun day. It’s a lovely well maintained course.
Beautiful course!!!!
The course is in excellent condition. The greens are perfectly maitained. I would rate this as one of the top 5 courses I've played in Washington even though it's extremely challenging.
Enjoyable tour thru the forest
First time playing in the Pacific NW. After a previous days rain, course conditions were boggy but still very playable—only one mud ball all day. Front nine is completely forested—a few homes on the back. Gentle rolling layout with no forced carries. Undulating greens with some difficult reads. Staff was pleasant and helpful.
Management was too terrible.
I have played this course many times but I have terrible experience today. I booked 8 players using Golfnow but unfortunately we had heavy rain and could not continue the game. We decided to quit after 9 holes because of heavy rain and low temperatures. I went to the club house and explained the situation for the rain check but club staffs and manager refused to give us rain checks because I paid to Golfnow.
They explained only their policy but didn't consider customers. We played further 9 holes with rain.
Cold round’
A Beautiful course to play! Staff friendliness and food were awesome, course was in great shape considering the conditions with the exceptions of the sand traps most of the bunkers were not raked but a wonderful round well worth the money!
