Worthy of the #9 ranked public coarse in NJ!
Heron Glen for being a public county coarse is an excellent course, worthy of being private! First time playing the coarse and it definitely won't be the last. I played it on a windy day so it made the coarse that much more of a challenge but I have a feeling that everyday out there will have at least a little wind. I really enjoyed the round and have already been telling my friends to go play it.
Not for beginners
Beautiful course. Heavily wooded area. Lose a lot of balls if you can't hit straight. Not worth the $63
Interesting course, drop zones a little too favorable
Despite the clubhouse being a big shed, the course was in good conditions (greens a little bumpy still after being aerated a few weeks back). Drop zones for environmental areas are too generous, but the bunkers were in fantastic shape having been redone this year. Course held up despite mid round storm. Only real grumbles were no drinks cart (was 90F + and very humid) and the halfway house charged me $4.50 for a bottle of water.
GREAT COURSE
FUN COURSE, CHALLENGING, EXCELLENT CONDITION, TEE BOXES ONLY OK, GREENS FAST AND FAIR EVEN WITH AERATION. WILL DEFINATELY COME BACK. LITTLE PRICEY IF YOU CANT GET A HOT DEAL. STAFF GREAT AND VERY, VERY ACCOMMODATING
Nice course
Played here a bunch of times with my club (DGA) mostly on weekdays. We mostly played the whites and occasionally play the Blues. I took a friend who lives in the area and never played the course. I booked through Golfnow and played at 706am. The course was nice and the greens were fast. My friend loved the the course and is interested in playing it again. We played 27 holes.
Well kept secret
Love this course, challenging yet fun to play. Will go back again and again
Great Course - Heron Glen
I would highly recommend this course. They offer several tee lengths and a easy to ready chart to guide which tee to play from. Greens are in great shape and the overall course is in superb condition.
The staff is very friendly and helpful and the facilities are nice and clean.
Make this a stop - you won't regret it!
Wide Fairways but Challenging Greens
Golf Now had a great bargain to play Heron Glen that I could not pass on. A great course with great club house people with a fast pace of play, overall a 5 stars experience
Quick Round Nice Conditions
Course was in good shape overall. Tee boxes fairways and rough we're very good. A few of the greens were a bit marked up especially #3 a long par four that gets a good amount of third shot wedge play. This is more on the golfers who do not repair ball marks than it is on the staff. Fairways are open and generous without much trouble coming into play. Always a bailout side to avoid bunkers. Courses real defense is thick but not tall rough and the wind which was down when we played. Saw the ranger quite a few times and can only assume he was doing a good job as we played in under 4 hours teeing off at 3:20 on a Friday. Overall I recommend. This is course that charges weekend rates on Fridays.
Best public course in Nj
Heron Glen continues to shine and deliver a great golfing experience. Mid July and the course is excellent. This is the time of year the greens keepers earn their pay. I played at 6:03 Saturday morning. Round took 3:40 to complete I saw more course workers than golfers. They really know how to take care of this course. Greens excellent tee boxes excellent new sand in replaced bunkers a little soft... Well done
5 star -immaculate
Best course I've played this year. Amazing course for NJ. Staff was awesome. Starter was nice. The ranger was all through the course enforcing pace of play! Which made it a nice 4 hr 15 minute round. Cant't wait to play again.
Saw all players fixing two divots on every green. Greens were nice and soft. Brand new sand.
Course is a little boring though no dog-legs, no water. But that doesn't matter to me.
Conditions A+
Best public course in the area
Overall my favorite course to play. Great twilight rates. Very open course so wind can definitely effect your shots. Just refinished bunkers.... Look great but difficult to play out of because of plugged lies
This course is great
Other than a few ball marks left in the greens this course is great. I really enjoyed my round the weather was excellent couldn't ask for anything more. Oh if your standing around waiting to putt repair a ball mark or two it will keep the greens in great shape :-)
Heron's Hidden Gem
Add my name to the roster of those so thoroughly enamored with this young and precocious track. Every hole tells a different story without seeming contrived. With forward tees and generous fairways Heron Glen welcomes the high-handicapper while the back tees (7000+) give the advanced player all he can handle. All calibre of players will wish for more course knowledge though in reading the greens, the breaks are subtle in appearance but decisive in movement. At this stage of the development (no doubt luxury homes to follow) the clubhouse is a double-wide trailer but the staff is unfailingly pleasant in a private club kind of way. The course is in nearly perfect condition, which you would expect for mid-June, and they are scrupulous in preventing unnecessary wear with thoughtful and appropriate cart-control signage. Overall, I am very impressed and I will be making the 1 1/4 hour trip from North Jersey many more times in the future. God, why can't we have public courses like this up here?
Solid course
This is a great course. Nice and long that can challenge you at times. This course was in phenomenal condition when I played it last year. This time round they were doing work on the bunkers so some of them were different than others or under repair. The greens were a bit slower than I remembered but ran pretty true and were in good conditions. The pace of play was ok considering that it was Fathers Day, which probably explains why no one fixed their divots on the greens. Overall this is a good course, especially if you are a resident. The only complaint really is the price we have to pay for being out of county residents.
Weekends are very slow
I love this golf course. A bit of a ride for me from North Jersey, but worth the trip. Very challenging, but might be a little difficult for the average golfer. Weekend play can be very slow and the ranger(s) do not really push the slow groups. Took us over 5 hours on a course that the staff promotes as a 4 1/2 hour round. The bunkers were recently renovated and the new sand is deep and soft. Makes it difficult to get up and down.
Fantastic Course
The course lives up to its reputation. It's a nice challenge, but fair, especially if you keep it in play. Plenty of sand, thick/lush rough, and even taller wild grass waiting to catch strays. It was quite windy when I played it, and was told that can be expected there. But the course is in fantastic shape and it's worth a trip!
Great course to play!!
Played this for the first time...
Heard a lot of good reviews and they were worth!!
Worth playing the course...
will be playing again...
Great course, great conditions
Course has a lot of great qualities, open and wide, many types of lies a golfer will encounter, be prepared to lay up as rough is thick.
Staff helpful and courteous, no clubhouse to speak of, oversized trailer is the operative, greens just starting to fill in, you will enjoy it, for me a little too far to play regularly, but will make another trip.
Wonderful layout
The course was in great shape. We played following several days of rain. Yet the course was dry. The drainage is obviously top notch. Also, the Bunkers are getting a make-over. But only the one or two they were working on that day are unplayable and they want you to take-a-drop away from these Bunkers.
