King's Forest Golf Course
About
Dating back to 1973, King's Forest Golf Course in Hamilton is among the top public golf courses in Ontario. The conditions are top-notch especially for a municipal course, and Ontario Golf Magazine has recognized King's Forest as a "Hidden Gem." A great afternoon with very nice people
I was visiting the Hamilton area and I thought it would be great if I were able to play at lest one round of golf in the area. I selected King's Forest mostly based on the reviews I had read on this site. The course was in excellent shape considering the area had not received a whole lot of rain lately. Considering the geography of this place, there were no blind shots, fairways are wide and greens are well maintained. My only negative comments would be about sand bunkers; they could use a little more sand. All in all, great people, great track and great weather...could not have asked anything better.
Just watch out for the Notorious Bobbsey Twins
This was probably the best municipal course I've played to date, and I remember reading that it was rated the #1 municipal course in the country. I concur. It feels like a traditional parkland style mature track where the holes seem to fit perfectly with the lay of the land. I played with my buddy Ed and we were paired up with a senior gentleman who was a member. Great guy and he gave us great course tips as this was our first round at King's Forest. I just wish I could remember his name, because he played a stellar 9 holes before calling it quits as the rain started to fall. We continued our round in light rain which opened up the course for us to play at our own pace.
Just watch out for those two male turkey brothers! They approached us on the 10th hole fairway and kindly allowed us to snap some selfies with them, but once we made our putts and started to walk back to the powercart, the 2 toms began to chase my playing partner Ed all the way up the fairway, a good 300+ yards on an incline! I had to bee-line it with the powercart toward the tee boxes to pick him up. Ultimately, it was a truly memorable and humorous experience, but just be careful if you run into them, because I hope you're in shape!
no carts available/prepaid
No carts were available for our prepaid round!!!
They need to fix their process.
amazing course
First time playing this course and I found it to be a great test of golf. half the fairways were tight driving while others where as wide as a blvd. This is a beautiful woodland course with some challenging but fair. you will have a lot of elevation changes with some breath taking holes. I can see this as being a hidden gem and for a municipal course, it was very well maintained. my only issue was that the bunkers were off. the top part was fluffy and underneath were pan hard. A bit of grooming could help this.
Slow pace and getting run down
This is a city course that has a lot of potential but unfortunately is getting run down. Back nine is much better than front in terms of shape and variety. But the real downer for us was pace of play. Waiting on every teebox for 5-8 min really ruins a round of golf. We played on a friday early afternoon and did not see one marshall anywhere on the course. Greens were not bad but slow. Fairways need a lot of work. No or very few cart paths. Proshop and clubhouse really run down. Overall recommend u spend your money elsewhere. Too bad because it has enormous potential.
King's Forest has a reputation
Heard about how tough King's Forest GC was...they were right.
Course too Dry
Really nice layout, very friendly staff. Course needs watering in this heat. Fairways too dry, tees need work, greens ok.
Interesting layout, very pretty course. Dave, the starter was great, let us get off early. Course just needs a bit more maintenance and watering in extreme heat.
Probably better value elsewhere for this price- $46.00 each w cart.
Great Value
Really enjoyed the round ... course was in great shape and very scenic ... staff was friendly. Would highly recommend ...
A Challenging Layout
Hamilton's Kings Forest Course run by the municipality is a very challenging course set in the Red Hill Creek Valley. The course features large well manicured greens most of which have one or more greenside bunkers and hard fast fairways. Wayward drives often find deep fescue and on a number of holes on the back nine thick woods. The creek comes into play on four holes.
There are 4 sets of tee blocks which stretch from 5580 to the tips which play over 7000 yards. An interesting feature is the optional set of tee blocks on the par 3 fourteenth. My partners and I elected to play from the elevated tees which made the hole very picturesque.
The pace of play was excellent (our threesome played in a little over four hours). We frequently encountered marshals and the beverage cart girl The cost of food and beverages was reasonable compared to other courses I have played this season.
First time King's Forest golfers would benefit from playing with someone who has played here before since there are a number of doglegs and other holes which feature blind fairway shots. The tee yardage signs do not have a diagram of the hole.
I would recommend taking a cart for this course and the day I played the cart paths were being resurfaced since the condition of the paths in previous seasons had been a concern.
Except for beginners King's Forest is a course that most golfers would find challenging and enjoyable.
Nice place, slow pace!
Great track with a challenging layout and picturesque scenery. Played on a sunny Saturday morning, but the pace of play was very slow. Marshall said that one of the groups ahead "had gotten 3 holes behind". We wondered why the Marshalls were even out there if they could let that happen. Clubhouse is somewhat dated & plain but comfortable. Food was good and the draft beer was cold. Will probably go back, but not on a weekend.
Excellent course
This is an excellent course with a really nice challenging layout. Greens can be tricky and sand traps are in really good shape. Very scenic course with elevated tees and a creek running through. Only complaint was the signature holes tee off was closed due to repaving below :(
disppointment!
Ok so I have not played here for 2 years now and I know that the course is lengthy and challenging. Problem started on first tee when golf now playing partners were late so we went off as a 2 behind foursome and threesome. Now I think if we were a 4 it might have been much more relaxed as we were hitting and waiting 5 minutes per shot...so no rhythm. Course condition ok good greens but the fairways are hard clay! Bunkers not well kept! Maybe another day and time and playing partner?
Old boys club
Is this a public course? Felt more like I entered a mafioso secret meeting place where everybody knew everybody else and I was intruding. The group in front were a 5some and Not Once did we see a Marshall to speed things up. I guess he had orders to not rush the Don!
Dont go for breakfast.
Course is nice to play. Only problem is went for breakfest only to find out dinning area dosn't open till
around 10. Also found bunkers not raked. Good day in all.
Hidden Jem
First time playing at Kings Forest. What a treat. It was a stunning and challenging course. Really can't wait to play it again
Good value for the hot deal money
I would have been very disappointed to pay full price for this course. The hot deal through GN made this a great option. It was fairly straight forward . Rough was a bit unconditioned. Staff and marshall were great. Good value if you can get it at the $55 price point.
King of The Munis.
You can't beat Kings Forest for challenge/value for money. An Ontario gem that's worth the drive from Toronto.
Mud Ballz
Course was in great condition. Very soft due to all the rain the day before. Every ball had mud after each shot. 4 1/4 hrs for a 4 some was very good considering the length and difficulty of the course overall.
Something to be thankful for
Hard to believe that at middle age this is the first time that I have played this course. Just an absolute gem. It may have something to do with the weather conditions, immacualte, or the fact that the fall colours are peaking but this was just an overall excellent experience. The course itself does provide room for error on most holes with still the chance for recovery but there are still a few that require a good tee shot to stay out of trouble. Walking the course is definetly a good way to get plenty of exercise.
Always a good test of golf.
Although the tee boxes were raggety, the greens somewhat thin and pockmarked and many areas could be considered ground under repair the course design is always a good challenge. Golf power carts are not included as most courses do through Golfnow.com. At $17.00 p/p the rate does negate some of the value of of the admission price.
