Great course
Was very surprise how nice course was, after reading a couple of the reviews.I don't no what course they where playing but it wasn't the one I played.
Challenging old style course
I enjoy playing courses that make you think about club selection off the tee, this course does that. Lots of doglegs with well placed bunkering. Bunkers however weren't in good condition. That is my only complaint. Greens were smooth but a little slow probably a 9 on stimp. If your used to playing modern push the dirt courses and want to play a course that was designed with shot shaping in mind go here. Look past the condition and enjoy the challenge
Pretty good course
it was my first time playing at this course and I have to say, not bad, not bad at all.. i will definitely play here again..
Accuracy off the tee a must.
This is a tight course that requires accuracy off the tee to insure an opening to the green on the par 4's.
Balls in the rough can be hard to find.
Sand traps are not well maintained.
Not For Me
I read several other reviews prior to booking a round here that said the course was in the best condition in years. I couldn't imagine it any worse. I could tell that in some point in its history it was a beautiful place , now it just suffers from the signs of neglect. From the patches of missing grass on several greens , to the lack of sand in the bunkers and even a pile of old dumped furniture behind the fourth tee are signs that no one there really cares. I wouldn't play there again even if it were free.
water coolers
Need to have cold water in the coolers and filled!
Newport
Great shape- fun.
Everyone needs to try this course.
great course, great value for the money
The course was in great shape and was a great value for the price
Target golf at its best!
Course in generally good condition, with greens surprisingly good and improving.
If you like to use all the clubs in your bag, this is a good course to play, with plenty of doglegs and distance variations.
Two in our foursome had never played Newport and were very happy. We will return again.
WOW What a Difference
WOW what a difference a year makes. I played this course last year and it was all dirt. I read the reviews on Golfnow and decided based on the $20 price tag I would give it another go. The course is night and day better. There are about 4-5 greens that have some bad patches but none that are unplayable. The fairways are almost full with a few bad patches off to the side. I played in the rain so there were only a few people so the pace of play was fast. I am worried that based on the price this course will not be able to maintain this condition through the heat of the summer. Go play this course before it gets to hot.
This course is great
My second time within a month. Friendly staff, great grounds keepers. I have been playing for about 2 months now and this course is forgiving to a starter. Pace of play was excellent. A great course for 1-4 players to enjoy a great time.
Great speed round
Tight golf course.
Bring and use all your clubs. Great doglegs, keep the driver in the bag, for better scores.
GREAT VALUE
course was in good shape however there were 2 holes number 9 in particular that the greens need some work. will go back can't beat it for the price.
Newport Golf Club
Newport has struggled with descent putting surfaces in the recent past but is currently bouncing back with a vengeance. All but one (#4) are rolling very nice. The fairways are holding good coverage except a few areas which are prone to hold water after a rain event. The club house is basically a shell of a great club from years past but does offer drinks and a short order menu for a quick bite yet nothing to get excited about. If Newport would focus on lowering the cut height on all tee boxes (tall cut represents medium rough on the tees) and replacing the drainage in a few bunkers and replace the sand in every bunker ( all bunkers are dominated by small to actually medium sized stones which are no friend to a clubs leading edge) Newport would surpass the condition of the majority of other area courses. All in all a great bang for your buck.
Significant Improvement
The last time I played Newport was late fall and the course was a disaster. I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in the course conditions. A few greens still needed some help, there were bare patches but they had been fertilized and should improve. The greatest improvement was the fairways, very few bare patches. The greens were much faster than they looked. We paid $16 to play, for $16 don't expect perfect conditions. It is a fun course and a decent layout and is improving. I will play it again soon. We played in less than 3 hours. This would be an excellent course for beginners, who should roll the ball everywhere.
Occassionally Worth the Drive
This wooded course has average length and difficulty. Accurate drives are required with numerous "doglegs" on the back. Six of the greens are in poor condition and all the bunkers need raking. The putting green, and driving range are in poor shape and the facilities are in fair shape. The course layout is interesting. It is worth the occasional lengthy drive to Crosby if you can get a discount but isn't worth regular prices.
Good Course...Well worth the trip!
Played this (county-ish) course for the first time with one of my brothers in Christ today (royalty). Good course in surprisingly good condition considering the recent reviews. Greens still in fair+ shape. Bunkers need a little TLC from players after their shots but not bad. I booked online from GolfNow and played for only $20 pp! I will definitely play here again, oh did I mention that I drove 3 hrs one way to give this course a look see... worth every minute and every stroke! Only negative, no logo golf ball for my collection. :( Come play this course, you'll enjoy it.
First Time at Newport
I liked the course. The fairways and greens were not perfect but overall it was fine. I got stuck, as a single, behind a couple of fivesomes that eventually let me play through. As is common with many residential courses, there were lots of doglegs.
great price but...
liked the layout and price but tee boxes were in bad shape and not cut at all. the bunkers were in great shape.
great day
greens were rough and some tees were not even mowed, but enjoyed a great time on a great day with a great friend.
