Providence Golf Club

About
Providence Golf Club in Richmond has a rich and unique history. The original location along the Pocoshock Creek closed in 1985 but the property and an adjacent parcel of land were then bought by a new development company. The additional land was used for six new holes while the original property now has longer and more spacious holes. The golf course then had another redesign in 2002 that was overseen by Virginia native Lester George, who is known for designing the highest ranked golf course in the state, Kinloch Golf Club. Providence G.C. wanders through a beautiful landscape of towering trees and wetlands. George utilized these natural features to create a number of risk-reward opportunities throughout the course. The golf course finishes with a risk-reward hole that is heavily guarded by both bunkers and a creek.

Providence is a local gem
Providence is probably the best centrally located course in Richmond. Nice layout, was in fine shape, greens and fairways nice.
Conditions
The greens are in terrible shape with thousands of old unrepaired ball marks among the encroachment of crabgrass and bare spots. They had been aerated and sanded recently and are horribly bumpy. I used to play here almost weekly a few years ago but since the greens are so bad now it’ll be a few years before I go back.
Great pace of play
The course was in excellent condition and the hole placements were challenging
Slow play
The course lost two major bridges in recent flooding. Only nine specific holes were available to play twice. I wish I would have known this before making a tee time. Lots of very slow players that wouldn’t allow any to play through. Left after skipping on hole and saw the next tee box had two foursomes waiting with another in the fairway and one in the green after 2 hour “front nine”. I will play again - only day off in a while and wasted it.
Full price - 1/2 the course
Great layour and course was in good shape. Greens are beat up due to unrepaired ball marks. Pace was 4 hours.
As with other comments, paid full price only to find out 9 holes were open up. Golf Now should indicate these issues prior to booking tee times.
It's a great course and fun to play. Hopefully issues will be rectified quickly.
Golf Now should offer refunds
As soon as I booked, I then tried to cancel...GolfNow and the individual courses were not at all helpful regarding all three days that I booked and needed to move or cancel due to one of 3 for all days of playing came down with Covid. Lost a total of about $350 for the 3 days and can’t even get GolfNow on the phone.
I played it Nov. 21 and the aeration must have taken hold because the greens were quite nice. Agreed, there are a FEW unrepaired ballmarks, thoughtless golfers, not alot or even that unusual, but certainly not the courses fault. I thought the greens were good, we have had rain following the aeration so I am guessing that the Greenskeepers plan has worked.
