Providence Golf Club
About
Providence Golf Club in Richmond has a rich and unique history. The original location along the Pocoshock Creek closed in 1985 but the property and an adjacent parcel of land were then bought by a new development company. The additional land was used for six new holes while the original property now has longer and more spacious holes. The golf course then had another redesign in 2002 that was overseen by Virginia native Lester George, who is known for designing the highest ranked golf course in the state, Kinloch Golf Club. Providence G.C. wanders through a beautiful landscape of towering trees and wetlands. George utilized these natural features to create a number of risk-reward opportunities throughout the course. The golf course finishes with a risk-reward hole that is heavily guarded by both bunkers and a creek.

Do everything you can to avoid the greenside bunker on the par-4 7th. Photo submitted by Back9Ben on 03/11/2020
Great little gem in the community!
I love playing Providence as the layout is not overly challenging for a higher handicapper like me, and the staff is great. The course, especially the fairways, definitely need some TLC but it isn't so bad to stop me from playing there. Looking forward to my seasonal league that will be playing there weekly on Thursdays.
Great Course, but overpriced, particularly for this round.
I'll start by saying I love this course. I have played here dozens of times over the years and it is one of my favorites in the area but this last visit left a lot to be desired and here's why:
1. First of all, at the time of booking, it would only allow me to book 3 of 4 slots at the discounted pre-paid rate. Not a huge deal, but had to call and book the 4th slot for that tee time and ultimately paid full price for that one spot upon check in.
2. It wasn't until check in that we were advised that the driving range was closed due to being too wet, but the course was 90 degrees, and we hadn't had rain since the Thursday before (3 days prior). Mind you, the driving range is turf mats at the tees. After teeing off, where the range runs parallel to hole #1, the range had been picked clean and didn't appear to be in any different condition than the rest of the course.
3. My biggest issue was the fact the greens had been punched and there was no notice. Not at booking, not when I called in to reserve the 4th slot, not at check in, no sign in the clubhouse, NOTHING. It wasn't until we got down to the practice putting green did we realize they had been punched. I realize how important this is and most courses in the area doing this around the same time - but you absolutely have to make people aware of it and let me decide if they want to play punched greens, especially for $71.00
4. No beverage cart on course. On a Sunday, with a mid-morning tee time, and there was no beverage cart. I have played plenty of afternoon tee times without a beverage cart which I almost expect at this point but a morning tee time? I've never not seen a beverage cart.
5. Replay cost. Despite course conditions, we had a good time so we decided to play 9 extra holes for a total of 27. $28 to replay 9 holes. I find that to be steep with a course in great condition but with punched greens? Seemed excessive. I have played other courses in the area where the replay is $10 / $15 / maybe $20. But I supposed in relation to the $71 18 hole rate, its in line.
All in all, the fairways and tee boxes were in good shape for late March. It was a busy day on course but I felt the pace of play was good. We had (2) 4 man tee times and we kept up with one another and the group in front. We did have a group of 3 behind us that waited a little bit but that was due to being behind several groups of 4.
Again, I love the lay out of this place and always enjoy playing. Despite all of that, I will be back again once the greens heal but will certainly be more inclined to play at a discounted rate rather than full price.
Fall golf
Played in windy conditions good course but dormant conditions
It drained well after heavy rain from previous day
Some funky holes on the back 9
Wonderful course
Visiting from out of town and this course was beautiful. Coming in fall and seeing the trees full of color was great. It has a lot of par 5 which is awesome forcing me to practice my woods and drivers. Also some short par 3 which are fun. Will definitely play again.
Great Course, people
Providence is a special local course. In good shape today, usually is. Fairways a pleasure to play from, greens rolling good. A solid, fun risk/reward course which will challenge you from the tips…whichever those may be for you.
Monty and the rest of the staff👍🏻👍🏻
Golfers: please repair divots fairways and greens🍻
