Crystal Falls Golf Course
About
While it hasn't received as much publicity as the other Hill Country tracks since it opened around 1990, Crystal Falls Golf Club is definitely worthy of praise. Highlighted by one of the greatest par 3s in Texas and some outstanding topography, this is one of those courses you'll want to play at least once, if only for the views. In addition to the scenery, the main thing everyone talks about here is the severely sloping fairways that provide problems for those who hit the ball left-to-right. The famous par 3 in question is the 192-yard 11th, featuring a phenomenal view and a 200-yard drop to the green. Club selection is a crap-shoot at best, and the green is surrounded by mounds.

11th Hole at Crystal Falls Golf Course, Leander TX Photo submitted by wshowers on 12/02/2012
Challenging course with lots of slopes
Challenging course that requires precision shots on almost every hole. Greens were in fairly good shape and played fast.
Well-maintained, challenging course for the $$
The staff at Crystal Falls is doing a great job - the course was in outstanding condition. Much better condition than in the past. This is a challenging course. You have to keep the ball in play from the teebox to do well here. Only downside was the complete absence of bunkers - you won't be working on your sand game here. Anyway, great job Crystal Falls !
Challenging Course with lots of fun holes
If you want to score well, you better hope your Driver came to play. Main key is to stay in the fairway, but thats sometimes impossible as the slopes of the fairways are unpredictable. Worst part of the round by far was that the greens were aerated recently, so they were borderline unplayable. Nobody in the pro shop bothered to even mention that. My 3-some joked like it was putting on the beach. The fairways were in decent condition, but it didn't seem like anyone felt the need to fill their divots. Pace of play was decent (~4hrs). Overall 4 stars because of the challenge and great views. I'm sure once the greens come back I'll try again and review again.
Challenging Course
Course is in a valley and many of the holes slope downward, so hitting the ball where it doesn't roll out of bounds is tough.
Pleasantly surprised
for 45 dollars I don't think you can get a better bang for your buck in north austin on a public course. Carts have GPS. Fairways and greens are in great shape. Course is not easy. I had fun. Will def be back
Great improvements!
The last time I played this course was in the summer of 2012, and the renovation projects were still ongoing.
I played Crystal Falls for the first time this year in mid-April and I am impressed to see the results. Course looks so much better, and it's still challenging. So glad to have this course close to me. I'll be getting back out there real soon!
Narrow - challenging for average golfer will few level lies from the fairways
My wife and I enjoyed the course except at the time the greens had just been sanded. Women's tees were fairly placed and often she outdrove me. Some of the approach shots over ravines and water made it challenging for her 150 yr max distance.
Beautiful and very challenging course.
Albeit very beautiful surroundings this course needs a local tour guide. MANY blind shots make this course a challenge. Very quick and undulating greens hand you your ego quickly. Well over 5 hours to play is unacceptable.
very challenging for all level players. beautiful hill country course.
very challenging course for all level players. Beautiful hill country course.
Love golfing at Crystal Falls
Course shut down due to lightning, but other than that it was well taken care of.
Great Course
I have played this course during every season, since it's only 10 minutes from house and not too expensive. She is at her best in the Spring, like a woman in her wedding dress. The fairways were green, the greens were amazing. Much better than expected since not much rain has fallen in the area in the last 3 months. The only gripe I have is that they let 3 singles play behind my group of 4. Three times we had to stop and let a single play thru. How about grouping those guys together, so we all can play at about the same pace? Other than that, had a great time on the sloping fairways of Crystal Falls.
It's a 5 in my book!
Tucked at the western edge of the Crystal Falls community is this gem of a golf course. I was greeted by Jeff and Larry in the pro shop - they were just a nice as can be even though I was a little late with my Golf Now prepaid tee time. They worked me in with a 2-some and wished me a good round.
The course is in very good condition contrary to some other reviews - fairways and greens well maintained.
Most holes have generous landing areas off the tee with the holes getting more challenging as you get closer to the green. The holes narrow up, but no bunkers. Greens have plenty of movement - more break than I read on most putts.
Front 9 plays a loop through a series of canyons - very enjoyable landscape. Back 9 is a out-and-back routing, with 2 narrow holes side by side.
3 of the par 3's are basically the same distance, but they don't play that way. Two with major downhill changes in elevation.
Overall, I really liked the course - it felt like a country club. You won't be disappointed. Bring your "A" game - this is not an easy golf course.
Could not play back 9
Course was nice..or at least the front nine. Back nine was closed due to recent storm. Would have been nice to know ahead of time the booking was made or been alerted. Overall, the course was nice and staff was friendly. Would like to see the back nine some day.
Awesome
Great value and course. I'm going back at every chance time allows...the money definitely will.
Greens were in great codition but fast
Greens were in great condition but fast which made putting tough.
the course has awesome views
I really like playing at Crystal Falls. This course is very challenging. You have to bring your A GAME when playing here.
Course is tough and the carts are slow
Great staff, the carts are slow for the climbs they must take and lets just say there might not be any sand but there is enough water for ya. Sloping fairways are still an issue as you must play bumper golf and hit toward the slope as the ball runs all over the place.
The sliding scale did not work except magnetized to the extreme positions or the middle.
Good value, good condition except for 10% thin turf on the fairways. Greatly improved since the 1980s, but I can't convince my golf buddies of that, so they resist the drive out of Austin. I'd compare it to some of the expensie country clubs around Austin in quality, but much greater value at the price. It is still unforgiving of the fairway, but that goes with the territory in a hill-country course.
Great course
This course is the perfect mix of difficulty and beauty, with gorgeous hill country views on many of the holes. Overall, the course and greens were in very good shape. If you have a hook at all, bring lots of balls!
greens are tough but fair to putt on.
The narrow and sloped fairways create a challenging range.
