Crystal Falls Golf Course
About
While it hasn't received as much publicity as the other Hill Country tracks since it opened around 1990, Crystal Falls Golf Club is definitely worthy of praise. Highlighted by one of the greatest par 3s in Texas and some outstanding topography, this is one of those courses you'll want to play at least once, if only for the views. In addition to the scenery, the main thing everyone talks about here is the severely sloping fairways that provide problems for those who hit the ball left-to-right. The famous par 3 in question is the 192-yard 11th, featuring a phenomenal view and a 200-yard drop to the green. Club selection is a crap-shoot at best, and the green is surrounded by mounds.

11th Hole at Crystal Falls Golf Course, Leander TX Photo submitted by wshowers on 12/02/2012
Great golf course!
This golf course is great! I have been playing here for years and it just keeps getting better and the staff is great!
Great course
Fun course in great condition. Challenging greens. Usually not too crowded.
Too many large groups permitted
Got first available tee time for Friday after lunch. After playing two ( open) holes I encountered a log jam of epic proportions on number three. After approaching the group on the tee I discovered it was not multiple groups but one large group that was actually a SMALL faction of five more groups of similar size. Looking ahead I could see the hole was absolutely clear. The forward group was nowhere to be seen and I fully expected the group to offer to allow me to play thru. That was not the case however, and they all 5 loaded into their carts and proceeded to their tee shots. At this point I decided to cut my losses and proceed to the back nine. Along the way I passed the remaining 5 groups who had commandeered the entire front nine. At one point I had paused to allow a group to finish their tee shots and one player commented that this procession was an every Friday occurrence that commenced at 12:00.
Aside from the obvious tee time mismanagement, the course was in good shape, with a few small areas being under repair. If you plan to play here I would certainly inquire about large parties prior to booking.
Great value and venue with only complaint is around pace of play as need more rangers speeding up play.
Nic course just didn't like the slow pace of play,. Need to either get more rangers or have rangers do the job of pushing slow groups.
Always a fun track.
Great course, but avoid Fridays around noon. I guess they play some sort of noon game there and those guys are super slow. I have been behind them twice now and there is NOOOOO playing through with these cats. They like to take a long break at the turn, adding to the already long play. Other than that, this is a great course.
Very tough layout for most golfers. Always a challenge to get pars.
Have played Crystal Falls GC many times over the years. Presents a great challenge for most golfers due to the sloping fairways and very fast greens. Some improvements have been made on several holes by re-routing the cart paths and cutting some timber for better layup to hit into the greens. More improvements are needed, however, to make this course a truly unique and satisfying golfing experience. The course is gradually getting improvements which can only help to make the playing better. Nestled in the suburbs of Leander, this hidden course offers privacy and great views of the surrounding hill country. Wild game (as in turkeys, deer, etc.) are seen quite often crossing the fairways. The creeks and rock ledges carved out over many years give the course a real wilderness feel, even though it is located in an upscale development area that is currently booming. A great value, but take your "A" game with you to this course. It is a tough layout that will punish an errant drive; lots of sloping fairways and trees to "get close to nature". Greens are almost always kept in very good condition; very fast greens, with one or two almost "unreasonable". It would be very cool if the course would add a second 18 holes to augment what is becoming a real Texas Hill Country gem.
Overall a very pleasant experience. Fun and beautifully cared for.
Our first time at Crystal Falls. I had been told its a beautiful course but really didn't know what to expect having only played for 9 months. We arrived, went to the pro-shop and was greeted by a warm and friendly guy and co worker. They gave us a bag of balls for practice and din't charge because my husband had a free pass for the day and it appeared I paid for both of us. We got our cart and went through a surprising little tunnel to the practice range. Finished up there then he pointed us to the first hole and off we went. All the greens were well kept, gorgeous views, outstandingly wholesome and nice people we chatted with along the way. the 5th hole had a surprisingly short drop and got you warmed up for hole 11 . When we were finishing up the 8th hole, the cart allowed you to order lunch from the cart! What a treat!
At the clubhouse, quick bite to eat and on to 10. As I mentioned 11 was a drop shot but so well laid out. We both enjoyed in immensely. When we got to 16 I admit I was wearing down, but I hit a cracking shot for 220 yards and landed 50 yards from the pin.
Overall a big fat 10 on my scale. I've played Lost Pines at Bastrop State Park. Highland Lakes, Point Venture, Butlers Pitch n Putt and Harvey Pennick. this course was head and shoulders above the rest. can't wait to go back.
Golfnow pricing makes this a great bargain course
Course is in good condition and greens were running fast. If you have not played this course in a year or so .. come back and see all the improvements that have been made.
This course is a challenge !
This course is a challenge, but it keeps you coming back for more! Don't even think about making a round in four hours and bring extra balls:).
Great Course. Nice challenge.
Firstly, this is the first golf course I've played outside of the northeast. I was shocked at how firm the fairways and greens were. The greens were very smooth but they were fast! Fastest I've ever played. And the fairways were so firm that the ball just rolled forever, sometimes off into the rough because many of the fairways slope. Overall I was very happy with the condition of the course and the layout. There were some challenging blind shots, but there are markers in the fairways and behind the greens to help you find your way. Each hole had its own personality and I never felt like I was playing the same hole over and over again, which is how I felt on some other boring courses. The in-cart gps is a nice feature and seemed to be very accurate. Pace of play was 4.5 hrs for my threesome. The staff were very friendly. I would definitely play this course again.
This is a fantastic course I really enjoy!
It's wonderful experience for see the dying foliage of trees, listenning the sound of creek water, feeling a beautiful landscape of hill country, walking through the courses in a nice fall weather. You cannot get such an wonderful experience if you are not a low handy. Narrow and undulating fairways, water hazards, fast greens. It will be stressful without a strategic approach to each hole.
Fairways are tough (blind shots & slope of the fairways .) Tough slopes on the green (if you 2 putt it's a victory).
This was the first time I played at Crystal Falls. After the first 18 we played another 18. It's a tough course. The carts have GPS. The staff was friendly. If you want a challenge then I would recommend this course. Some of the courses I've played: Star Ranch, Teravista, Avery Ranch, Falconhead, Highland Lakes, Delaware Springs, Mill Creek (Salado. Power lines on 16.), Rhodes Ranch (Las Vegas), The Legacy (Las Vegas), Royal Links (Las Vegas. Tough course.), Brookside (California. At the Rose Bowl.), Coyote Hills (California). I don't keep score so I don't know what my handicap is.
Beautiful course but tough for high handicappers.
This was my first time to play this course and I was impressed with the layout, tucked into and winding through the rugged terrain. The fairways tend to be narrow and sloped, so keeping it in the center was a challenge. The greens were in great shape but some of the pin positions are downright mean. Count on lots of 3-putts if its your first time out! The little creek that winds through the course is really pretty and it was a real pleasure to see clear, flowing water and minnows swimming about. Wish I had played better (shot a 97, but I play by the rules and count every stroke and putt) but I'm sure my buddy and I will come play this great course again. One improvement would be to have sand containers on the carts....we wanted to fill our divots but couldn't.
Very nice and scenic course.
Crystal Falls is a wonderful course to play - lots of great views and a few challenging holes. It helped to play the round with someone who had played there before - some holes had a few shots where strategy was very important.
This is definitely a course for non walkers if you are over 60. There are many fun shots.
Good course fun to play. Lots of water and hills. You will probably lose a couple of balls so take a couple of extras.
Beautiful course
I always feel like I took a vacation after playing a round here. The scenery is classic "Hill Country"- Vistas, views, cliffs, trees. The course is well loved by the staff and playing there is a joy.
Tough course, especially on a windy day
Need to play the course with someone who knows it. Several blind and placement shots that are impacted by the hilly terrain. Also, course is hard to find...don't trust your car's GPS.
Hit Up/Down, Slope Left/Right -- just a few extra swing thoughts for you
CF has quite a few interesting 'where and/or how far do I want to hit it' holes. There's a good amount of elevation change throughout the course. The main thing to consider though is the creek -- it basically runs through the whole course in that the fairways will almost always slope towards it. That's something you need to keep in mind when on the tee box. I do enjoy being out on the edge of the hill country with minimal intrusion from the housing community.
