Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Lots of ground under repair on every fairway. This was one of the better ones. Photo submitted by Ken9948006 on 03/27/2023

This course for the price is insane
It’s a decent course but if I’m gonna pay these rates I’m going to bear creek. The conditions are comparable to prairie lakes but for almost double the price
Good course - Weird layout - Poor fairways
This is a fun course with great holes that mix up how they should be played. Varying lengths and some which force you away from driver off the tee. Some fairways were in very poor, rocky and baron conditions. Others were perfect. The final point is this course is NOT walkable. They have it laid out so you have to go past the clubhouse multiple times with multiple turn arounds and a weird overall layout. Hole 1-3 are by hole 10, but hole 4 is on the completely opposite side of the course. Hole 16 is across the freeway, but hole 18 is another significant drive back across past hole 15. As a first timer if I didn’t have a local in our 4-some it would have been very difficult to get around.
Just OK
This is the first time I played Iron Horse in about a year. I am not a fan of the new layout. They moved hole 1 down by the Red Caboose which is a good ways from the clubhouse. Really far if you are walking. Then you have to come back to the clubhouse to hole 4, which used to be the previous hole 1. It seems very disjointed. The course was in decent shape and the greens were good. Play was slow. 2.5 hours for front nine. But the service was good and the staff friendly. Overall, it was what I rated it, just average!
Course needs maintenance
We were told that coolers of water were no longer allowed.
Great Staff but the back nine needs help
I have played this course a ton over the years and it is a decent course for the money. The only thing that is a problem is the back nine. holes 12, 13 and especially 15 need a ton of work. I know that the new owners spent a fortune on the irrigation system on the back nine but those three holes are still bare and down to dirt. 15 is especially bad and I think its due to the creek on the left side that over flows after every rain storm and washes away any grass. I had a great tee shot right down the middle but because of the concrete like dirt it bounced and was never found again. I am ok with being punished for a bad shot but when you get one right down the middle you shouldn't be taking a penalty stroke for a lost ball.
Ryan
Course was in pretty good shape considering time of year. Pace of play was as awful, almost 5.5hr round on a Sunday, typically 3 groups on each hole, 2 4-somes on tee box multiple times. Marshall/starter didn’t do much to control pace other than just drive around. Seemed to be some hard pan fairways on a couple of holes, lots of new sod in other fairways of the course. Staff inside was welcoming and friendly, cart lady was fun and easy going.
Back nine was in horrible shape
Fairways were atrocious. Back nine had at least 4 holes that had little to no grass in the fairways. Just dirt and rocks. Front not much better. Rocky bunkers. Beat up greens. $90 is a rip off. Such a shame cause this used to be one of our favorite courses to play
Overpaid
Course was not worth 77 dollars. Fairways in horrible shape. Greens were ok because they were very moist, still lightning fast! Waist of my hard earned dollars!!!!
Avoid until it bounces back
We played here for the first time since they moved the holes. They grounds are in rough shape especially for the price on a Friday afternoon. It would be nice if every hole had an indicator wha hole it was; 18 was missing one- if you come up the back, instead of going around to 4, you play out of turn and it’s so confusing. The arrow pointing “to 4” is actually pointing you to go up the back to 18. I would have rather played fossil for the price.
Fun course but overpriced
I like Iton Horse but it’s overpriced unless you find a deal in Golf Now. Too many fairways that are perpetually under repair and many nicer courses for a better price nearby It’s a shame because it’s an enjoyable course
Iron Horse new layout
Looks like the front 9 got some swapping and I love it! Made things more interesting
Great condition. Never disappoints
Course is a mess, starter/marshall is rude.
I used to like playing here. But the starter/Marshall was so rude and the course is undergoing a restoration. It’s not worth the money to play right now. $60 for a weekday to play off of dirt on some holes and having a 1/4 of the holes no carts is just not a great combo for the money.
The starter lady was the worst I’ve ever seen at a course. I play courses all over DFW and have never had an issue with a starter. I she was rude from the start. I was playing by myself, so naturally I got paired with another single and double, not a problem. The problem came when she made myself and the other single pair up in the same cart. This is a person I do not know, a complete stranger, she made us ride in the same cart. We both paid for a cart yet we had to ride together. When we pushed back she got an attitude with us and said it’s been a rule for a year. I’ve played this course 5 times this year and not once did anyone mention this. So I had to ride with a random that was a rival of another school I went to. The most awkward round I’ve ever played.
I won’t be going back anytime soon.
Poor showing at Ironhorse
We had heard so many good recommendations to come and play Ironhorse in North Richland Hills. However, upon showing up and playing for the first time, the fairways were in atrocious shape, the ground was under REPAIR most everywhere, but there was no warning and no heads up that the course fairways were mostly dirt not even grass. Very disappointed in my first outing there. I would say avoid it until they find ways to bring real grass back to the fairways..
Great course experience
I enjoyed my round with my 2 junior boys...Great and challenging course, had my boys caddy and give me tips haha!
