About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Average but not as good as in the past
It’s been a while since I have played this course, and unfortunately the conditions have not improved. Many fairways had lots of bare spots. Greens were in good condition though. Pace of play was a big issue. Not sure why they had a fivesome start in the middle of the afternoon….we were waiting about 75-80% of every shot. Hopefully with time they will be able to get the fairways in much better shape.
Bad timing with aerated greens
Overall the course was in pretty good shape except that the greens had recently been aerated which made putting a challenge.
Fairways need work.
Not fun when you hit the fairway and your ball bounces like it hit the cart path.
Great Course and Great Location
Played this one for the first time today. I was really impressed with the condition of the course. The layout is a little jumbled and fairways run pretty close together but the greens are in great shape and rolling way fast than what I’m used to. You can tell they aerified earlier in the season than most of the other places I’ve been. Only played the front 9 before the storms moved in and rain got heavier but I can’t wait to go back and play the back half.
Sandy greens
The course had just sanded the surface of all putting greens but did not disclose this at front desk. Tiny pebbles littered every putting surface as well. Course has been deteriorating for a while, I would recommend putting $$ elsewhere at those prices.
Unplayable
Over half of this course needs to be completely tilled and repaired. Hard dirt patches throughout the fairways on almost every hole except #1. Course marshall told me to back my cart up on hole 11 which was CPO. Not labeled anywhere, staff did not inform, and cart did not stop until halfway through the fairway. The Marshall (Tim) requested that I move the cart back to the path before striking my ball which I was already halfway towards. I told him no because it's not labeled nobody told us and I'm not walking twice the distance now. Not sure who that guy thinks he is but Iron Horse needs more respectful course Marshalls than what I experienced. Also, making half your course cart path only will not fix it. It needs to be physically repaired.
Absolutely horrible!!!!
Played today. They failed to mention the parking lot was being repainted. Very rude about the parking. Almost like we were inconveniencing them. Has front 9 closed off. Had to play back 9 twice. The backup was ridiculous fairways were in bad condition, really bad. Hard pan in every fairway. Fig being spring and with the rain it would be in good shape. If you’re looking for a good course in dfw there are plenty of good ones. This is not one of them. We talked to them about it and they absolutely could care less. Just looking to book tee times. Terrible!!!
Iron Horse Golf Course
The staff is friendly and helpful and local. The course admittedly needs some work, however the work is being done. Everywhere I looked while playing the course is being maintained and improved. The facilities clean and relatively new. The clubhouse isn’t fancy but it is full service.
Overall Iron Horse is a fabulous way to relax and enjoy a really great day on the Golf Course.
Overpriced weekends
Charged $90 to play Sunday morning. I would not return on the weekends for this price. The course fee should be $30-40 MAX. The fairways are covered in dirt and rock. Greens and tee boxes were good.
Terribly Overpriced For Conditions
The fact that Iron Horse charges $80+ on the weekend is laughable. Really sad because this used to be a fun course. I don’t understand how they charge what they do given the conditions
The Bad: Terrible conditions for the price. 60% of the fairways have been dry/rock hard for 2 years. Pace of play is not the best. Bunkers have rocks in them
The Good: Decent tee boxes and good greens. Staff is always friendly
Quality and pace of play
I typically don’t leave reviews but today I’d feel wrong if I didn’t. I’ve played Iron Horse multiple times before and just hoped that it’d get better. The tee time being $90 is almost criminal for what the course offers and plays like. Fairways a rock hard but the greens were decent. Most of the course is cart path as well. Won’t play here again
Good greens
Greens were fast and smooth. Good to putt on. Some of the fairways were a mess so course could offer a discount and mark these areas as GUR a lot better.
