Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Bad day
One of the longest games I have ever played bc of waiting. The course design was the cause of some of the slow play as many holes were literally on top of each other. Surprisingly I played well but wasn't a fan of this course
One of the best courses for the money in Fort Worth
Reasonable green fees, Chris in Pro Shop is excellent, greens are the best I have seen this time of year and very fast. They do hold but you need to be close to pin on some holes since the ball may run off and into the water. I was disappointed with the big pot holes at the edge of most of the cart paths around the course! Really rough and they need to fix these issues. Fairways good and yardage marked well. Tee Boxes rough on some holes at the white tees but the longer tee boxes are not as bad due to not as much play. On five holes no carts on fairway and not all were par threes. If you drive to close to water hazards or areas marked no cart, the cart will not go forward and you have to back out slowly! Carts are controlled by GPS!! Kind of a pain sometimes. It is better to not hit a driver on many of the longer holes due to sharp dog legs with high trees/creeks. Iron play is the key on this course. The greens will test your putting skills. Overall really good course and fun to play.
Gem of a course
I was very wary to play this course, given the fact that is a true Country Club experience. The front half of this course is played with in the community that this course is located in, so houses and commercial drainage areas. You really have to keep a narrow ball on the front half of this course. The GPS was a godsend on this course, as the distances were deceiving. Overall, this was a great course to play, it was very fun. The staff and the regulars were extremely nice. I would recommend this course to anyone of any skill level.
A few poor things stand out
Greens were in good condition and fast, making the round challenging. Some fairways were in disrepair while others were immaculate; the course doesn't appear to be designed to handle a lot of precipitation.
They really screwed up the start list for my latest round. Sent out a group of five (college team, so this was unavoidable) and told me that I (a single player) would be paired with a threesome. The other group turned out to have 4, and told the starter that a 5th would be joining on the back nine. And the course was ok with that?!
It should never have happened - either don't let me book that tee time online or tell the group of 4 they can't play together, let alone add a 5th after the term. We sorted it out by letting another group of 3 jump ahead and I played with them instead.
I'll never understand why the 7th and 10th run parallel to each other. It's exceptionally dangerous since a slight pull or slice risks hitting someone on either fairway. Very poor design there.
Having the turn so far away from the clubhouse is also bizarre, but they have a bathroom facility and you can get food, so unless the weather is bad you'll be fine.
course management is the key
Not a straight hole on this course. Creeks running across at very strategic spots. Many hazards are blind from the tee box. I found keeping your driver in the bag and setting up your second shot is the way to approach most holes. The greens were very fast and challenging. Stay below the hole or possibly putt off the green and into water.
Great course always green!!
Beautiful course, fairways are always green, even this time of year when all the other courses are dead, greens hold and roll great, great pace of play, love the staff, always a good choice
Excellent greens
Some of the best greens I have played on this winter. Course is in great shape for being winter. Very tight lies but that is expected in the winter.
What happened to this course?
This is usually one of the better public golf courses in the Fort Worth area, but something is wrong. I don't know if the management has changed, but this course outside of the greens is in terrible shape. The fairways are unplayable in areas and the rough has been destroyed by carts. It was really sad to see this course in the condition it was in. I understand February golf and the course conditions, but this was not just winter golf conditions. I have played here numerous times in the winter months and I have never seen it in this poor of a condition. Hopefully something changes before spring.
Nice Course
This course has a really nice layout surrounded by railroad tracks. A neat setup that can be tight and challenging at times. Wasn't in pristine shape, but it was winter, so that's understandable.
Iron Horse NRH
Golf weekly and the greens at Iron Horse were the best I've seen all winter. Fairways are tight with little wiggle room but a very satisfying round.
Great layout with very challenging greens
This course is awesome! Has just enough undulation. But you will need to be a good driver in order to have shots at the greens, which are VERY fast. I took advantage of a rainy weekend so ended up having the course basically to myself. There are a decent amount of blind shots, so if it was busy I can see a round taking longer than pace. Still, I feel my overall rating would likely still be 5 even if I had played during normal conditions and with peak "busyness" for a weekend round. Strongly recommend this course if you've never played it!
