Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Lots of ground under repair on every fairway. This was one of the better ones. Photo submitted by Ken9948006 on 03/27/2023

Excellent greens
Some of the best greens I have played on this winter. Course is in great shape for being winter. Very tight lies but that is expected in the winter.
What happened to this course?
This is usually one of the better public golf courses in the Fort Worth area, but something is wrong. I don't know if the management has changed, but this course outside of the greens is in terrible shape. The fairways are unplayable in areas and the rough has been destroyed by carts. It was really sad to see this course in the condition it was in. I understand February golf and the course conditions, but this was not just winter golf conditions. I have played here numerous times in the winter months and I have never seen it in this poor of a condition. Hopefully something changes before spring.
Nice Course
This course has a really nice layout surrounded by railroad tracks. A neat setup that can be tight and challenging at times. Wasn't in pristine shape, but it was winter, so that's understandable.
Iron Horse NRH
Golf weekly and the greens at Iron Horse were the best I've seen all winter. Fairways are tight with little wiggle room but a very satisfying round.
Great layout with very challenging greens
This course is awesome! Has just enough undulation. But you will need to be a good driver in order to have shots at the greens, which are VERY fast. I took advantage of a rainy weekend so ended up having the course basically to myself. There are a decent amount of blind shots, so if it was busy I can see a round taking longer than pace. Still, I feel my overall rating would likely still be 5 even if I had played during normal conditions and with peak "busyness" for a weekend round. Strongly recommend this course if you've never played it!
Good round regardless...
Morning rain dictated cart paths only on a pseudo-holiday (Mon, Jan 2). That said, play was slow, but still under 5.5 hrs. Course good for winter, especially the greens. This course is always a challenge. Expect to use a broad range of clubs .
Too expensive and slow play
They need a Marshall speeding up slow play. The round took over 5 hours to play.
Overpriced for the course conditions this time of the year.
Still great value
Always fun, challenging. Few tee boxes in rough shape (mounded n sandy) with couple fairways recently maintained. Great pace front 9, back 9 was a stomp down.
Beautiful Friday after Thanksgiving
Awesome holiday weekend round with my 15-year old son. Tee time was 1:23 but they were running about 10 minutes behind schedule and not surprising to us given the holiday weekend. Some might call it tricked up a little bit and others might call it difficult. 8-12 HC players would probably not need driver too many times unless playing the black. I used driver 4 times and shot a 75 from the green tee box but played cleaner than usual. Bent greens run fast in the summer and winter here. I play here often and the course has a lot of interesting holes that make you think. I recommend it.
Always enjoyable
Having a course close to home that never disappoints is a bonus. Aside from a few fairways that needed attention, the course was in great condition. The greens always roll true and test your ability to leave the ball in the right spot on your approach shot.
If the tee boxes could get flatten out and maintained better, a 5 star rating would be well earned.
Well definitely continue to play this course.
Great iron play course
Course has mature trees and overseeded. Great course. A few holes are having fairway issues but greens are great. Highly recommend for 30 bucks during the week.
First time breaking triple digits
I am typically not a fan of this course, largely due to the fact that in the past my game has not been up to it. Combine that wish a typically slow pace it makes for an unenjoyable round. This round was better in that my game was better and I got to play with a Young Vet and an restaurateur. The company made the pace bearable. Shot 92, but should have broke 90
Best course in Ft Worth
This is my local course which I play a lot, so this is a cumulative review.
Iron Horse is a fantastic course. The fairways and greens are always well-maintained, the practice area is great, and the staff is friendly. I've been playing here twice a week all summer and it never gets old.
The only downside is that highschoolers play in the afternoons, and they walk the first 6 holes, which slows the pace of play. So make sure you get out ahead of them (they usually tee off around 2:45).
Not A Four Star Course.
I just lost all respect for GolfNow's star ratings. This course is no where near 4-stars. I'm giving it 2-stars.
It's not a bad course, but it's definitely NOT the same caliber as other 4-star courses I've played on.
As mentioned by other reviewers, you're going off roading on this course. There are many pot holes that seem to be there for a while. The greens people are trying to maintain the course so I don't know why they can't repair giant pot holes on the course.
The sand in the bunkers are also very compact. I'm a decent sand player and was able to get up and down each time, but the sand is very hard and not the fluffy stuff.
Overall, the course could be a decent. Mature trees and water along most fairways make it very interesting. GPS on the carts also proved useful when you're not familiar with this course..
In my opinion, the true value of this course including cart is $20.
Love it
Iron Horse is a great course. Gorgeous fairways this day, though some of the tee boxes are worn down and sandy. Greens were fantastic.
Iron horse
Great course but there's some serious water damage on a few of the holes. It was like 4 wheeling out there.
