Iron Horse Golf Course
About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

Not for the Vacationer
There on vacation. Pro shop and restaurant staff were very friendly and responsive. They did however plan to make a 'fivesome' out of three singles and a twosome. Luckily the fifth didn't show. That group would have comprised myself (an 8 handicap from most second sets of tees) a senior (good senior player, not long but probably a 10+- from appropriate tees) a twosome that complained of being grouped with others and proved to be extreme novices in their level of play, pace of play, and other course etiquette and basic 101 procedures. Who knows what the fifth may have presented. Needless to say pace of play suffered even though we all played from the tees of the marshall's 'guidance'. The course is situated in a residential community and it has plenty of homes to distract a recreational player. I didn't see this in any of the online information I found. Not what I look for in 'vacation' golf. It's apparent that the superintendent works diligently to provide a well maintained property in typically arid conditons with lots of traffic. Not sure I will play there again as there are too many choices in the area for a vacationer.
Fun Track
Played Iron Horse for the first time and really enjoyed the track. Short course that requires ball placement. My only complaint is that the greens would not hold a approach shot. Granted it was at the end of summer but still to not be able to hold a very high approach shot with a 9 or PW is very frustrating.
Fun layout
Course was in great condition. Staff friendliness was just so-so. My t time was 2:30 on a Tues, I thought it would be less crowded, I guess a lot of people(like me!) snuck out of work. It was a 4:20 minute round. Great layout, some wide fairways, some narrow. I would say it's a placement course...
Great Course
The course is in great shape, greens are hold shots when hit with scoring irons.
Nice layout course
This is Second time I played n enjoyed.
But too many single player!!! Following behind!!!!
Golf Course Management
Course overall in good shape. Greens were punched recently but rolled and held true. Very Wet may have been over watered around greens. Tee boxes needed to be mowed. Still one of my favorites!
Take a Course Map
Course was in good condition. There are a few quirky holes that I really don't know how they expect you to play and par. Routing is very confusing, I had to be shown by the marshall directions to a few holes. Overall, a good experience for the first time playing this course.
Challenging Course
Greens were bumpy and had been recently punched with some sand still on the them. Fairways were in pretty good shape, except where they had over watered in some area like the fairway of number 10 and in front of some of the greens.
Great Course
Course is in really good shape and staff is friendly. Range and putting green are nice. I will definitely play there again.
Good pace of play. Good stafg
Great conditions. Pace of play good. Had league starting so we had to jump to different holes. No biggie. Played few extra with no problem. Beverage cart staff great.
Will test every part of your game
Your handicap will travel well if this is your home course. The greens are a bit slow, but very smooth. Miss a fairway and you pay for it with a stroke chipping back into play. The course is not long, but it is demanding. As Feherty says "It sets up perfectly for an accurate tee shot". Greens hold well, cart girls are frequent and friendly, can't say no to the sausage, jalapeno dogs at the turn on pretzel bun, best in town. When the wind is up, this course has teeth! Beautiful property in the heart of mid-cities. WELL worth the price!
Good. Greens
T boxes were horrible. The majority of them were not level at all
Slow play
We were 1st off and after we tee off on number 10, a long line of carts passed us.... Rut row.. The dropped a tourney in front of us. they did not make us aware when we made tee time or when we checked in.. We didn't finish the round because the wait on every tee box exceeded 20 min. When we complained to person behind the desk at pro shop, he said we just play to fast ... No apology just wanted to blame us for playing to fast. Customer service was vey poor
Excellent Course and great price
Our group of 4 all had nothing but good things to say about the course. The course overall was in very good condition. The course was just challenging enough and not too difficult to play. Our only complaint was no restrooms on the back 9 and you don't come back to the clubhouse after the front 9. They could have had their course marked a little better with directions that holes are located but these are just little details. We had a great time and definitely got our money's worth. Excellent price considering how well kept it is. We will definitely be back.
nice course
Fairways were a little over played but really nice
A hidden gem!
Good course but not easy! Course is in great shape and so is there cart girls. I'll be back to challenge myself on the hidden gem located in DFW!
Fun, tight course layout
Enjoyed my 2 rounds (did the first round at 6:52am and play again at 1pm after lunch) on a beautiful day.
Highlights: Course is tight and rewards well planned shots. Despite the amount of rain in May the course is in pretty good shape. Layout is fun especially the par 3 8th hole.
Lowlights: The carts...where to begin with these things. If you like someone telling you where to go and stopping forcing you to put it in reverse with beeping this is your place. You will hate these carts and the constant reminder that you're behind even when you're playing 3hr 30min rounds. Staff inside was not friendly in any way.
Bottom line: play here but don't expect much, look for deals as it's typically a bit expensive for a mid range course.
A good first round
This was my first time playing Iron Horse and it was a good round overall. The course seems to have suffered quite a bit from the extensive rain we've had in north Texas this year. A lot of holes had chewed up fairways and pockmarked greens, as well as large burnt and dry patches throughout. Course maintenance will definitely be as issue for some time to come, so hopefully the crew will spend some time on it in the months to ahead. Apart from that, the course design was challenging enough and quite fun to play. I will be going back, especially since it's only 2 miles from my house. I just may not go during the heat of the day next time, because there is not much shade throughout the course either.
Rain drops
Well, I was paired with a guy who had played golf 4x total, and to top it off it was cart path only!
